I would like to thank the instructors for their thoughtful guidance; they patiently explained examples and shared various experiences, helping me shift from a single perspective to multiple angles, allowing me to explore many possibilities in airline services! I also appreciated that HKCT arranged different opportunities for us, such as visiting Hong Kong International Airport and participating in the 47th Anniversary Overseas Conference of the Hong Kong Travel Agents Association held in Bangkok, Thailand, which was recommended by the school instructors. These experiences have greatly inspired me and boosted my confidence in facing future challenges in the industry." Lai Ming Yi "Life at HKCT is fabulous and full of challenges. I got a lot of industrial exposures during my study in HKCT. I had visited Cathay Pacific City which showed me a full picture on airline operation process including flight disruption and passengers handling. Furthermore, I have visited different 5-star hotel groups such as Marriott and Shangri-La group, which broadened my understanding of the characteristics of different positions and the overall operation process of the hotel industry. More specifically, I had participated in different mega events and networking activities where I could enhance the level of profession and broaden horizons before I graduated. For example, acted as the event helper in 'Gourmet Young Master Chefs', acted as student representative in Hong Kong Association of Travel Agents Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Being the Student Leader in the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival organized by Hong Kong Tourism Board further developed my leadership skills and teamwork collaboration. Working in Wing On Travel during my internship period have enriched my understanding in different segmentation of the tourism industry, allowing me to learn from the actual working environment, increasing competitiveness and acceptance after graduation. In short, the knowledge I learnt in Higher Diploma in Tourism Management helped me to adapt to the job purview of Customer Services Officer in Cathay Pacific Airway quickly after graduated. For example, modules of Airlines Ground Service Operations and Airport Operations and Management have given me a preliminary understanding of airport operation and services in a micro perspective. All these exposures and vocational training have sharpened my knowledge and well-prepared myself prior to joining the aviation industry." Wong Wing Ting, Sa "I have been benefited a lot during 3-year study in Hong Kong College of Technology. I have learnt practical airline services knowledge, which is essential to my placement. In my last semester, some of us have been sent to Jardine Aviation Services for placement. Life is not easy working at the airport, like waking up early in coldness and darkness, running with passengers in the airport, etc. However, I appreciate everything I have learnt, which will be beneficial to my future career development. Many thanks to my lecturers for this great opportunity as well as sweet memory built with my classmates." Tjioe Pui Lam, Yuri "I am happy to share my feelings about my placement. I was a trainee who worked in Human Resources Department in Hong Kong Airlines. This was a valuable experience for me to gain knowledge and learn about different circumstances in the airline industry. Indeed the placement changes me a lot, especially my future plan and personality. This work experience makes me more mature to face challenges and more confident to communicate with others. Now, I am a full-time Human Resources Assistant in Hong Kong Airlines. I am grateful to have this valuable opportunity!" Diploma of Applied Education (Hospitality and Aviation Services) FAQs What are the minimum DSE academic requirements for Flight Attendants or Ground Staff? Is there a chance for me if my English is weak? Five passes in the HKDSE (including English)" is the basic entry requirement. If you lack confidence in your English, you might consider starting as Ground Staff first, or studying for and taking the IELTS (generally requiring a band score of 5-6) or TOEIC (generally requiring a score of 600+) to supplement your qualifications. Diligently practising your boldness and speaking skills, and then applying for an internal transfer or re-applying for a Flight Attendant position later, often yields a higher success rate. Are there promotion opportunities for Flight Attendants or Ground Staff? What is the career ladder and salary like? Career Ladder & Salary Reference: Ground Staff: Ground Services Officer > Assistant Ground Services Manager > Ground Services Manager Flight Attendants: Flight Attendant > Flight Purser > Senior Flight Purser Note: Salary references and remuneration after promotion vary depending on the airline, work experience, and individual ability. Does studying an aviation course help with entering the industry? Although airlines do not list this as a mandatory recruitment condition, the most important value of aviation courses (especially Higher Diplomas) lies in providing work training in mock cabins and check-in counters, as well as internship arrangements. HKCT arranges over 600 hours of internships for students at aviation or ground handling related organisations. Practical experience is ample, and students with good performance may have the opportunity to be directly employed by the internship organisation. What are the duties of Flight Attendants and Ground Staff? Ground Staff: Mainly divided into two posts: in the Departure Hall (Landside, non-restricted area) and the Restricted Area (Airside). Checking in departing passengers Checking passengers' travel documents and flight tickets Handling seating arrangements, checked luggage, and cargo arrangements Providing customer service and answering passenger enquiries Flight Attendants: Work primarily inside the aircraft: Greeting and guiding passengers to their designated seats Providing flight and safety information, and ensuring safety within the cabin Arranging food and beverage services for passengers Answering passenger enquiries and attending to their needs Handling emergencies, such as first aid and assisting passengers in evacuating the aircraft Disclaimer Tuition fees and subsidies are to be reviewed and adjusted annually on various factors.
