The Department offers rigorous training in Chinese language and literature. The curriculum affords a close examination of the characteristic features of the Chinese language, an in-depth introduction to theories of language and linguistics, and critical study of classical and modern Chinese literature. Students are expected to acquire solid understanding of the field in general while specialising in their own areas of interest, such as Chinese phonology and grammar, Qin-Han textual studies, Tang-Song poetry, modern Chinese fiction, and creative writing— all under the guidance of our erudite faculty members. The Department has long been emphasising diversified learning. We are collaborating with the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University to offer a dual undergraduate degree programme starting from 2019/20, which could combine the advantages of the both institutions to strengthen the learning experience of our students. In the academic year 2022/23, a double major programme in partnership with the Department of Translation (CHLL&TRANS) was introduced. This programme caters to students with a keen interest in both the theory and practice of C to E (Chinese to English) and E to C (English to Chinese) translation.
