Sociologists study the social lives of people and groups to understand how social factors shape one’s mind and behaviour. The Sociological Imagination helps you understand social phenomena from different perspectives. The Department of Sociology at CUHK has the longest history and the most comprehensive curriculum of its kind in Hong Kong. We currently focus on six research clusters: Crime and Deviance; Economic, Politics & Society; Family, Gender and Sexuality; Population, Health and Migration; Stratification and Education; and Computational Social Science. All our teaching staff excel in their fields of specialization. Students are required to complete a capstone thesis project before graduation. In addition, students can choose to concentrate on one or more of the four areas of concentration: 1) Research Methods and Data Analytics, 2) Sociology and Social Policy, 3) Society, Sustainability and Technology, and 4) Human Security and Social Governance. Sociology students are often eager to explore the world. On average, 20+ students leave for exchange in overseas universities annually. To prepare students for their future career, the Department offered 20+ internship opportunities throughout the year . The Department now offers a four-year double-major option in collaboration with the School of Journalism and Communication and a BSSc (sociology)-Juris Doctor double-degree option in collaboration with the Faculty of Law. We provide one of the best sociological training in the region. According to The Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject (Sociology) 2025, our Department is ranked the 18 th in the world and 2 nd in Asia. For details, please click here . Note 2 Note 2 : For Liberal Studies (LS) subject taken in 2023 or before, a Level 2 or above will be considered as “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development. The LS level will not be considered in the calculation of admission scores.
