The programs combine strong foundations in mathematics and science, engineering design principles, and practical transferable skills needed to address real-world problems. The disciplines of chemical engineering, bioengineering, and energy and environmental engineering are instrumental in addressing many of the grand challenges of the 21 st century, such as accessible and effective healthcare, clean energy and sustainable development. Through a rigorous curriculum with both breadth and depth, along with hands-on learning opportunities such as industrial attachments and research, graduates will be well equipped with the necessary expertise and versatility to thrive in diverse career paths in academia, industry, and beyond. Students who enter HKUST through this Departmental choice may enroll in any of the following major programs: BEng in Chemical Engineering BEng in Bioengineering BEng in Energy and Environmental Engineering Program Highlights: Program Highlights: Interdisciplinary Training: Students are immersed in a curriculum that bridges multiple science and engineering disciplines, preparing them for a wide array of career paths and opportunities. Students trained in these programs are especially well-prepared for R&D careers owing to a strong foundation in molecular sciences combined with the analytical and design skills of engineers. Industrial Attachments: Internships and plant visits provide first-hand experience of the industry, and our unique co-op program offers a 6-month full-time industrial placement as a capstone experience within the 4-year study period, creating a seamless transition from academia to industry. Experiential Learning and Research Opportunities: Students will conduct hands-on experiments in the state-of-the-art laboratories to reinforce their learning. Ample research opportunities spanning many exciting research fields, including some at top overseas universities, are available to our students. Emphasis on Data Science and Computational Thinking: Students will be trained in data science and computational thinking, as demanded by the modern disciplines of chemical and biological engineering. Courses dedicated to mathematical modeling, data analysis and machine learning are parts of the curriculum. Students can only enroll in one of the two Extended Majors. Those enrolled will take extra credits in their chosen Extended Major alongside their Major Program. By following a structured pathway, students can complete both the Major and the Extended Major within 4 years. Students who are interested in the Extended Major in AI may also choose the School-based program choice JS5282 Engineering with Extended Major in AI.
