Why study Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at Derby?
Be a graduate that is sought after by an industry offering attractive salaries and significant progression right from the start of your career
Take advantage of our connections with employers on work placements and projects
Benefit from the option to transfer to another course in our Computing portfolio after your first year
Learn in a modern, flexible and inspiring environment, supported by specialist facilities
Dealing with data is one of the biggest challenges that society faces – but it also offers huge opportunities. From autonomous vehicles to medical systems, data science and AI is penetrating nearly every industry. Employers in both public and private sectors rely more heavily on data in their decision making than ever before, and these are all solved by rigorously applying mathematical modelling in combination with Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to ever growing data sets.
A shortage of a suitably skilled workforce has been identified by the Government Operational Research Service (GORS) and other bodies. And with the demand for AI skills and data science continuing to grow, now is the perfect time to study this area and set yourself up for a successful career.
On this degree, you will study the mathematical foundations of data analysis combined with the practical elements of performing that analysis and extracting useful meaning from the data. You will also learn the mathematical foundations of AI and how to construct AI systems and models.
Industry connections
The University has strong connections with industry. We collaborate with local and international companies on a wide range of projects, having previously worked with Rolls-Royce, JCB, Bentley Motors, Alstom, CERN, Toyota and Bloc Digital.
This course is also linked to our East Midlands Institute of Technology (EMIoT), so you can benefit from the industry connections this centre provides. The EMIoT’s initiative is to deliver world class, research orientated, employer-led learning focusing on clean growth and digital delivery. You will also have opportunities to network with and learn from fellow EMIoT students at all four partner institutions, as well as undertake regular ‘challenge’ events to socialise.
You have the option to take an internship and a placement year between years two and three. This will give you substantial experience in industry as well as insight into the careers available to you once you graduate. You may also gain confidence and improve your success and progression in your future job roles.
You can get chance to work on live projects and case studies, which bring a sense of real-world learning to your learning experience.

You can also carry out your own research project and can also apply for our Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (URSS), where you could gain funding to complete a research topic in an area of interest.

You will cover the fundamentals of computing in your first year where you can gain an essential foundation of knowledge. At the end of this year, you will have the option to transfer to any one of the following courses:
BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming
BSc (Hons) Computer Science
BSc (Hons) Cyber Security
BSc (Hons) Information Technology
In your second year, you will study specialist modules specifically for your chosen degree, with your final year offering further options to tailor your studies to an area of your interest.

At the University of Derby, every student is assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) from the very start of their degree journey. Whether it's through one-to-one meetings or more informal catch-ups, your PAT will work with you to explore your strengths, address any challenges, and help you achieve your full potential. This relationship is designed to ensure you're not just succeeding academically, but also growing as an individual, developing the skills and confidence you'll need for your future career.
Your PAT will provide tailored advice to support your academic journey, whether that's by discussing your work, helping you set goals, or exploring career options. At Derby, we want you to feel both challenged and supported. Your PAT will encourage you to push your boundaries, think critically about your work, and develop a proactive approach to your studies.
But it's not just about coursework. Your PAT will also help you identify extra-curricular opportunities, whether that's joining clubs, gaining work experience, or developing new skills outside of your course. These experiences not only enhance your CV but also give you the confidence to tackle future challenges. In short, your Personal Academic Tutor will be there to guide you every step of the way, ensuring you leave university with more than just a degree — but with a wealth of experiences, skills, and the knowledge that you're ready for the next chapter of your life.
