Transcript for Business Management for Entrepreneurship at Lancaster University
This programme is unique because right from the beginning, we will have students partnered with an EiR mentor so that they are getting support from the beginning of their studies right the way through to the end. It's also unique because we have this new module called Entrepreneurial Masterclass, which is all about our students getting a real balance between the academic side, but their professional side as well.
So we have guest lecturers, we have field trips, and just a whole load of activities around personal development so that our students can leave feeling really confident about who they are and what they want to do in the future. The teachers are really open. They are really, they tell us about their lives and everything because most of the teachers are entrepreneurs. We could meet entrepreneurs basically weekly, and I think I met 20 at least in the past two years. And it's really interesting to see the different routes and ways they all became one. So I think it's really special in that way.
The way we do our modules really helps students reach their potential because we teach with an experiential style. So this means we're not just teaching you the theory behind what happens. We're teaching you through practical activities. So you're developing skills as well as knowledge so that when you leave, you're ready to face the world.
The students are really supportive with each other. Our teaching fellows are really supportive towards us. They really just want your ego to really shine. It's a really supportive environment. And they really want you to do whatever you want to do, but be the best at it and give you all the resources you need in order to be the best in your field.
Our graduates are unique because on Business Management for Entrepreneurship, we're teaching you how to have an entrepreneurial mindset. And this is something that many employers are looking for. They want graduates who are able to make decisions with limited information, or challenge the information that's in front of them. They want people who are able to adapt quickly and creatively and innovatively problem solve, no matter the situation. And that's one of the key things that we're doing here, is building your entrepreneurial mindset.

core modules accordion
Economics for Business
You will be introduced to economic principles and explore modern economic systems through both microeconomic and macroeconomic lenses.
You will learn how individuals and businesses make decisions at the microeconomic level. This includes understanding supply and demand, market structures, and consumer behaviour. On the macroeconomic side, you will investigate key national economic indicators, including national income, unemployment rates, inflation, and the implications of economic policy.
This module takes a less mathematical approach, and provides an accessible and engaging exploration of economic theory, emphasising conceptual understanding and real-world economic phenomena.
Foundations in Management Theory and Practice
Today, management is everywhere. It shapes businesses, work organisations, and our daily lives. But what does it truly mean to manage? Who is a manager and what do they do?
You will be introduced to key theories and practices that define management, exploring how they influence decision-making in all sectors of human activity. Management is not just about control and rational decisions based on established models. It is about solving problems, leading people, and navigating complex organisations. Additionally, it involves understanding change and uncertainty, as well as power, politics, and human behaviour.
How do managers tackle difficult decisions, prioritise competing demands, and respond to unexpected challenges? By the end of this module, you will have a strong foundation in management decision-making and the critical thinking skills to evaluate how management operates in today’s rapidly changing world.
Foundations of Accounting and Finance
This introductory module is your gateway to mastering three essential areas in business: financial accounting, management accounting, and managerial finance
In financial accounting, you will learn to craft and understand how to prepare financial statements for external stakeholders such as investors, creditors and regulators.
In management accounting, you will explore the preparation of financial information for reporting to internal stakeholders such as managers or executives and discover how tailored financial information is used to inform managers’ and executives’ planning, decision-making and control of business activities.
In the area of finance, you will study financial markets and the process of managing money, investments and other financial resources. You will also learn how firms budget, borrow and invest for the future.
By the end of this module, you will have the knowledge and skills needed to navigate these critical areas with confidence.
Foundations of Entrepreneurship and Innovation
This module will equip you with a unique set of knowledge and skills essential for becoming a successful manager or entrepreneur. You will explore how to generate innovative business ideas and create or co-create new products, services or even organisations. Employers are increasingly seeking candidates who can make these kinds of innovative and entrepreneurial contributions in the workplace.
We will introduce you to the core concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation, providing a global perspective on their history, challenges, and relevance. You will practice identifying opportunities, pitching ideas, and creating returns on both financial and social investments through an entrepreneurial challenge that will help integrate your learning from other modules. As a result, you will develop the ability to think and act entrepreneurially in diverse organisational settings.
Principles of Marketing
This module provides a broad and comprehensive introduction to marketing, giving you a solid overview of how marketing works in a business context. You will be introduced to key marketing concepts, including:
Customer value
Segmentation
Targeting
Marketing communications
This will give you a great foundation for understanding how organisations use marketing to connect with audiences and grow their business. The insights gained from this module will help you think more strategically in any business role.
Professional Development for Entrepreneurship
The Management School is committed to your professional development. We provide study skills to equip you to learn effectively from day one, along with employability skills to help you in securing placements and jobs during and after your degree. The module is tailored to your needs as a Business Management for Entrepreneurship student.
In your second year, you take five core modules and choose one optional module.
Developing Innovations
You will develop an entrepreneurial mindset, along with creativity and problem-solving skills that are essential for driving innovation in dynamic business environments. Through the application of design thinking methods and tools—such as creative problem-solving, empathy, user-centred research, rapid prototyping, and visualisation techniques—you will learn how to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.
This module challenges you to explore contemporary global issues through the lens of responsible innovation, sustainability, ethical decision-making, and inclusivity, ensuring that your solutions align with societal and environmental needs. You will work in diverse, cross-cultural teams to collaborate, generate, refine, and present innovative proposals. You will also critically analyse information, propose viable solutions, and effectively communicate your findings to both experts and general audiences.
By encouraging entrepreneurial thinking and responsible innovation, this module will give you the skills and knowledge to navigate complex business situations and make meaningful contributions to sustainable and inclusive global enterprises.
Enterprise in Action
Working in small teams, you will create and manage a business (via a business simulation) through its initial startup phase and the first months of trading. Throughout the simulation, your team will address the complex organisational issues involved in developing and deploying a ‘go-to-market’ strategy. Each team is given an initial investment of capital, which you can use to get up and running.
This experiential learning experience is engaging, powerful and immersive. You will apply what you have learned from your course to a ‘real-life’ business management situation in an integrative way. Each team member can work on a different aspect of running the business, such as operations, marketing, finance or HR. This challenge tests essential skills, including critical thinking, planning, business modelling and strategic thinking, all whilst working collaboratively in your team in a competitive, real-world business scenario.
Entrepreneurial Skills and Enterprise Development
Entrepreneurs know how to spot, capture and develop opportunities. They use their networks and manage relationships with all stakeholders to build successful ventures.
In this module, you will develop essential entrepreneurial skills and competencies that drive social, cultural and economic prosperity. You will explore topics all aimed at launching and growing entrepreneurial venues, such as:
business model design
opportunity identification and evaluation
business feasibility and resource management
customer identification
risk management
collaboration strategies
By the end of this module, you will have a deeper understanding and appreciation of entrepreneurship, recognise the importance of developing an entrepreneurial mindset and learn what it means to be enterprising.
Entrepreneurship in Context
This module will immerse you in the unique and interrelated areas where entrepreneurial practices and opportunities emerge. It will focus on different forms of practice that inform and explain entrepreneurship in the corporate world, social enterprises, franchise organisations and family businesses.
The module will include four streams:
Social enterprise - a context in which entrepreneurial practices generate social value
Franchising - a context where entrepreneurs develop businesses and foster innovation through partnerships
Family business - a context where entrepreneurial opportunities align with family objectives across generations
Intrapreneurship - a context where opportunities lead to the emergence of new ventures within existing organisations
By adopting a contextual view of entrepreneurship, you will gain current insights that you can apply in practical settings. You will engage with these contexts by providing solutions to challenges presented by practitioners in franchising, social enterprises, family businesses, and corporations.
Funding, Finance and Business Planning
We define entrepreneurial finance as the getting, using and managing of money in entrepreneurial contexts. Financing is a common reason for the failure to launch, grow, and operate ventures.
This module will teach you the theory and practice of how entrepreneurs raise funds at different stages, from launch to growth and eventually exit. You will learn about the critical importance of cash flow management, along with the daily financial decisions that entrepreneurs must make for effective management. Additionally, you will explore the government policies that impact entrepreneurial finance and examine the role of business planning as a tool for raising funds.
Throughout this module, you will engage in business planning and strategic decision-making in projects that focus on the financial aspects of entrepreneurship in different contexts. This experience will give you confidence in planning and monitoring finances for your own future ventures and equip you to advise entrepreneurs on their financial decision-making options.

Business Data and Intelligence
In this module, you will be introduced to key topics in business intelligence, business analytics, and business data science. You will learn essential concepts, principles, and techniques related to analytics. You will explore how data collection, description, visualisation and analysis can empower institutions to make more informed decisions.
We will also cover methods for discovering, measuring and visualising relationships within data, as well as the fundamentals of forecasting and data mining. Real case studies will be presented to highlight the practical value of different analytical techniques, while also identifying common pitfalls, such as "lying with descriptive statistics," misleading visualisations, data overfitting, and the notion that "forecasts are always wrong."
The module will utilise spreadsheet software to support the computing and visualisation aspects. The approaches you will learn will be invaluable for your future studies and career. Finally, you will learn how to write reports for management that effectively communicate your findings.
Managing Uncertainty in Business
The module begins with an overview of business analytics, focusing on developing your intuition about randomness and uncertainty in business. It introduces various business analytics techniques that take uncertainty into account. You will examine case studies illustrate real-life situations, enhancing your understanding of the importance of recognising uncertainty, which is omnipresent in data and in decision-making.
Global Business Knowledge and Mindset
Boost your CV by gaining international experience and earn credits towards your degree. You study abroad at a summer school at a partner university between your first and second year.
You will gain subject-specific business knowledge and experience studying in a different country and culture. You can choose from a wide selection of partner universities based on where you want to study and the subjects offered.
Some of your assessment will take place at the partner university. You will also write a reflective essay after you return to help you articulate what you have learnt during your time abroad. This will help you to link your experiences to employability for future interviews.
To complete your experience, you will participate in an online project during the semester, working with an international team of students. This project will help you develop a global mindset and build your communication skills as you work in a cross-cultural team, participating in a business game where you will complete challenges related to the global Sustainable Development Goals.
Study Abroad
You will spend one year studying in another country at an exchange partner institution. The courses you take will vary based on the options available at the partner university. Throughout this year, you will deepen your subject knowledge in your field while experiencing life abroad, developing your cultural and personal skills.
Before the year begins, a study plan will be created with a study abroad advisor to ensure you make the best choices for your academic journey.
In your fourth year, you will take four core modules and choose one optional module.
Strategic Management
Strategic management involves making deliberate choices that shape an organisation’s direction and scope, ultimately enhancing its ability to create value and achieve long-term success. In today’s rapidly changing business environment, the ability to strategise—process complex information, think creatively, and persuade others—is an essential skill. These abilities influence a firm’s short-term performance and long-term survival, impacting a wide range of stakeholders.
This module provides you with an in-depth understanding of strategy. You will learn to critically analyse real-world business decisions using contemporary strategic management thinking. Through interactive lectures, case analyses, and discussions, you will explore how firms position themselves in competitive markets, manage resources, and adapt to external changes. You will also examine how artificial intelligence is transforming strategy making, from predictive analytics to automation. By the end of the module, you will be prepared to tackle complex strategic challenges and make informed, impactful decisions in your future career.
Responsible Leadership, Gender and Inclusion
This module helps you develop as a responsible and effective leader. You will learn to make decisions that balance the concerns of all stakeholders, including employees, society and the environment. You will engage with responsible leadership theories to gain a deeper understanding of your own approach to leadership.
A critical element of leading responsibly is the ability to recognise the arguably “Western” and gender-blind theoretical concepts that underpin leadership, gender and business. You will develop a critical perspective to support your entrepreneurial leadership practice beyond your home borders.
Additionally, you will explore and identify the impact of leadership on gender and diversity in business. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your own perceptions of leadership and gender, as well as how these perceptions might influence your career and entrepreneurial aspirations within your specific country context.
Entrepreneurial Masterclass
Hear from entrepreneurs, business leaders and expert academics, and gain unique insights. Discover the latest insights and strategies for managing and leading entrepreneurial businesses whilst gaining an understanding of current issues and topics in business and management related to entrepreneurship.
The module will feature guest speaker sessions from Lancaster’s Entrepreneurs and Leaders in Residence, offering you valuable knowledge and first-hand experience of organisational environments and challenges. Through this module, you will be able to integrate what you learn across your entire degree by discussing and observing the practices involved in managing entrepreneurial ventures.
Innovation Project
This integrative, independent module brings together all aspects of your degree, enabling you to apply your entrepreneurial knowledge and skills to a real-world innovation challenge. You will work closely with an assigned supervisor and receive mentorship from Entrepreneurs in Residence to develop innovative, responsible, and financially viable solutions for a public or private sector organisation.
You will ensure that your solutions align with principles of sustainability, ethical decision-making, and inclusivity. By critically assessing the feasibility of your ideas, you will consider financial viability, market potential, and long-term impact. Using design thinking, strategic analysis, and business modelling, you will refine your concepts and present your findings to stakeholders.
This capstone module challenges you to demonstrate mastery of entrepreneurial thinking, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making, ultimately preparing you for professional roles in innovation-driven organisations.
Business to Business Marketing and Negotiations
Discover how marketing works in business markets, where long-term relationships and negotiation play a central role. You will examine how organisations market to other organisations, manage key accounts and build trust in complex decision-making processes. Additionally, you will learn about effective strategic negotiating skills and reflect on the ethical dimensions of working in B2B environments.
Scaling for Success
Explore how entrepreneurs lead strategic change across four common stages of an entrepreneurial organisation: start-up; growth; crisis; and change of direction. Understanding the realities, risks, and opportunities that entrepreneurs face during these phases offers valuable insights for learning and development. The module will enhance your strategic thinking and resource planning abilities while developing your adaptability and decision-making skills. By examining the concept of ‘good growth’, we will highlight the need for entrepreneurs to lead change in ways that promote a more sustainable future for the organisation, its stakeholders and the wider world.
Smart Data and AI Systems for Business
This module introduces you to the role of data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) in modern business management. It covers key concepts, tools, and techniques used to analyse business data, generate insights, and support decision-making. You will explore how AI applications, such as machine learning, predictive analytics, agentic AI, and large language models (LLMs), are transforming management practices across industries.
The module emphasises practical problem-solving through case studies, hands-on exercises, and discussions on ethical and strategic implications. By the end of the module, you will have a foundational understanding of how analytics and AI can enhance business performance and drive innovation. You will also develop the technical skills needed to leverage these technologies to solve real-world business problems.

Transcript for Springpod Trailer: Entrepreneurship in Action
What is entrepreneurship?
Is entrepreneurship something you're born with or something you learn?
An entrepreneur is someone who takes risks, manages ideas and creates opportunities either for their business or the entire community. Balancing people, planet, and profit.
Can entrepreneurs really do all three?
I'm Jenni Scrivener, and this is entrepreneurship.
