How our pathways work
A pathway is a defined selection of modules taken from a range of degree programmes, e.g. Biology, Engineering, Geography. We then organise them into dedicated science and technology ‘groupings’. We ask you to choose three pathways in your first year of study. Before choosing your pathways it’s useful to understand that the complexity of some pathways mean they are double or triple weighted, meaning they count as two or three. For example, you may choose the Biology Pathway which is double weighted and another single weighted pathway such as Chemistry.
Click on each pathway to explore its structure. We offer pathways in:
Biomedicine
Chemical Engineering
Computing and Communications
Earth and Environment Science
Electrical Engineering
Human Geography
Human Physiology
Mathematics (Statistics)
Mathematics of Artificial Intelligence
Mechanical Engineering
Pharmacology
Physical Geography

A place for Katie
“Because I was so indecisive, I needed to pick a course which was flexible, allowing me to shape my degree as I went through it. I had never heard of a Natural Science degree but once I did a bit of research, I realised that was what I wanted to do as I could continue aspects of all my A levels. I couldn’t work out which university to go to, but after an offer holder day at Lancaster – I was taken! I loved the campus and how safe it felt. It had the greenery I needed but also was social with lots of things going on.
I had such a variety of aspirations in terms of jobs – I didn’t want to narrow my options by picking a single subject. It is also great on my CV now I am applying for graduate jobs, as so many employers want you to prove you can thrive in an interdisciplinary environment – which is what this degree has set me up to do.
I also did a year abroad in Australia. I am so glad I went. It was such a different experience, and I have come back with so much more confidence in my abilities academically as well as personally, as I had to become independent and put myself out there to make friends. In Australia, there are very different job opportunities, especially in geology-related fields, which opened my eyes to other potential jobs and made me more interested in geology.”

A future for Cathy
I'm a PhD researcher with CGE at Lancaster University (as part of the Eco-i NW programme). I graduated 2020, and I was lucky to be offered a sponsorship as a full-time researcher. My research is evaluating university-business collaboration for sustainability. I did an internship with CGE when I was doing my undergrad where I interviewed and audited market traders in Lancaster and came up with ideas to improve their sustainability. I really enjoyed this and stayed in touch after as they did funded Master's. Instead, I went for the funded PhD!
So many skills have been transferred from my Natural Sciences degree. I've moved into the social sciences, which would typically be a big shift, but having the opportunity to do human geography in my undergrad made many of the concepts and ways of working familiar. Other skills that really helped were time management (always necessary when juggling 2-3 subjects!), critical analysis, and the ability to apply different thinking to problems in an interdisciplinary way. Being able to look at things from fresh perspectives is really useful and needed if we're going to work towards a sustainable transition. Report writing, presentation and working with people across disciplines are definitely skills I use daily.
I absolutely loved my degree! I'd say that I most enjoyed the diversity and being able to pick and choose elements which were most important to me. For example, I'm really passionate about sustainability and agriculture so was able to do biochemistry modules relevant to plant science, environmental biology (which included sustainable farming), and human geography, where we looked at the processes of sustainable consumption and food security. All of that helped me to do my dissertation which included a little bit of all of it!
Cathy Olphin, BSc Natural Sciences - Doctoral Researcher at Centre for Global Eco-Innovation
Considering a study abroad year in natural sciences?
“During my third year I travelled abroad to study at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. This was such a great experience to learn about the Australian equivalents of the flora and fauna I had been taught about at Lancaster. With the help of my Natural Sciences study abroad advisor I chose corresponding modules to study that would set me up for my final MSci year back at Lancaster. In Sydney, I was able to go on incredible field trips, get my scuba diving license and travel around Australia and New Zealand. This year helped me decide on my fourth-year dissertation project – impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown on coral reef fish behaviour.
Now coming to the end of my degree, I can 100% recommend Natural Sciences at Lancaster to anyone who deeply loves science and the connections between the different disciplines. The scope for further work and research in this field is extensive, and the advice I would give to anyone considering it would be to come along to an open day. Lancaster is small, but the city and the campus have so much charm – it’s so worth checking out in person. This degree has set me up to go into ecology, which I now have an increased appreciation for, with the field and analytical skills helping me secure a graduate role as an ecologist.”

Versatile scientists
Science increasingly depends on collaboration across disciplines. Natural Sciences helps you develop the breadth to make connections between different science areas while building expertise in the subjects you choose. With flexibility built into the programme, you can shape your studies as your interests develop, with options to study abroad or take a placement year adding valuable experience beyond the lecture theatre.
A place for Niamh
“My choice to study Natural Sciences at Lancaster stemmed primarily from an interest in interdisciplinary science – specifically, the area where physics and the environment overlap. This course has allowed me to study my own selection of modules within these two fields to formulate an entirely unique degree. I am particularly interested in hydrology and glaciology, and my understanding of thermal physics and maths has really helped me to understand both topics.
A huge highlight of my degree has been the field work aspects of my course. I have completed field work in the Lake District, the south coast of Devon, and the Swiss Alps. These modules stood out to me as they helped me to develop my field skills while being surrounded by students studying other degree schemes.
My next step is to complete a PhD in the field of glaciology. The uniqueness of my degree means that I can approach subjects from a unique perspective, joining research with a good understanding of physics-driven processes in the environment.”
Niamh Critchley – Natural Sciences
Our Fieldwork
Our students often embark on fieldwork research trips,. These help to reinforce knowledge by providing the practical experience that employers seek.
Fieldwork Diary – Switzerland Field Trip
“In June 2025, I joined a third-year Alpine Environmental Processes module, based in the Swiss alps in Arolla, Valais. This module involved proposing, designing, carrying out and presenting a small research project. I chose to propose a hydrological project –understanding how the levels of water within a glacial stream change during the day, and the factors which influence these changes. We measured the daily variations in water levels, temperatures, and turbidity (how much suspended sediment is in the water). I deployed two home-made rain gauges at different altitudes to measure precipitation over the study period. We experienced huge variations of weather in one week, starting with blazing sunshine and UV 11, turning to 3oC and snow, hail and fog, and an avalanche later in the week.
As well as developing field research techniques, this module helped me improve my personal and team safety skills, confidence in the field, and decision making. The work ignited my passion for glaciology, especially glacial hydrology. By working with the water system in Arolla, I was able to conceptualise and envision the processes taught in later modules. The Fieldwork really brought home how fragile these cryosphere systems are. After finishing my MSci, I intend to study for a PhD in this field.”
Niamh Critchley – MSci Natural Sciences, Physics and Environmental Science Pathways
