Transcript for Management and Digital Technologies at Lancaster
This programme is special in the sense that it's enabling you to manage digital technologies.
Across the programme, there is support from all the academics, all professional support staff in terms of developing your skills, your ability to analyse and read various sources of information, your ability to become a data analyst, to consume and become sophisticated consumers of information, from various different flows, and your data analytical skills, which then leads fundamentally to a key area that will help build is your ability to be, you know, make effective and ethical and responsible and strategic management decisions surrounding technologies in the workplace.
I'm in my fourth year now of the programme, and I think it's definitely helped me develop skills that relate towards the workplace.
And that was definitely the case when I did my placement year because the skills that I learned in my first and second year, I then took into my placement year and they definitely helped me in almost all parts of my role because you've got that background knowledge to be able to perform the role. But then they also help upon returning from placement, because what you've learned in industry, you're able to apply to theory in your final year, and it actually helps.
That transferable knowledge definitely helps you to not just do better in your final year, but understand things a lot clearer.
I found that the lecturers themselves really take an interest in you and your development. So not just in terms of your development on their course, but your development as an individual as a whole. So how you're developing in terms of a professional, in terms of your well-rounded knowledge. So, for example, in my first year, I was doing some modules that perhaps I wasn't as strong in. I went to see the lecturers and then they didn't just support me on that module, but they supported me on choosing other modules that helps to develop a well-rounded knowledge based on the field that I wanted to go into. And I developed an interest in management consultancy very early on, and I was guided in the direction that would help me develop those skills that I needed to perform well in that career.
What's unique about a graduate on this degree programme is that you're coming at technology from a management point of view, but also having a fine-grained understanding of technology. You'll be able to interact, and develop your own expertise and be able to translate from a management perspective to a technical perspective of how the new technologies can be implemented, how they can work in organisations, how they reshape organisations. So it's that ability to be in both those domains.

Project Management: Theories, Tools and Techniques
Organisations must continuously adapt and change to maintain a competitive advantage. Projects, whether viewed individually or as part of broader programmes and portfolios, serve as vehicles for configuring and implementing strategic change. They can also be used as a form of organising to bring urgency, impetus and finality to ongoing operations, a concept known as projectification. As a result, projects are common in the workplace, and project management skills are essential for career advancement and success.

We will examine how managers and management practices shape the meaning and identity of employees using corporate culture, workspaces and work environments, humour and emotions to align individuals with organisational goals.
Digital Cultures
This module explores how digital technologies, in their multiple forms, figure in our everyday lives and the global societies we live in. This includes social media platforms, search engines, publicly available artificial intelligence chatbots as well as the multitude of apps that mediate every aspect of our lives, from access to news and information to dating, food and consumption, education, and professional life.
We will analyse the affordances of digital technologies in connection to questions of power, context, and embodiment. This module will stimulate you to start seeing how media and technology do more than transmitting messages and information. Instead, they have an ontological role in shaping social relations, subjectivities, practices and cultures.
Attuning you to this role, this module allows you to understand media as much more than simply channels of representation or communication. The assessments in this module give you plenty of space to articulate your own experiences in everyday life to the theoretical literature and conceptual frameworks that you are introduced to in this module.
Digital Marketing and Analytics
This module will support your learning of how marketers and advertising agencies develop strategies to engage with their target customers. You will also reflect on emerging ethical issues such as privacy, data responsibility and the social impact of digital communications.
Funding, Finance and Business Planning
We define entrepreneurial finance as the getting, using and managing of money in entrepreneurial contexts. Financing is a common reason for the failure to launch, grow, and operate ventures.
This module will teach you the theory and practice of how entrepreneurs raise funds at different stages, from launch to growth and eventually exit. You will learn about the critical importance of cash flow management, along with the daily financial decisions that entrepreneurs must make for effective management. Additionally, you will explore the government policies that impact entrepreneurial finance and examine the role of business planning as a tool for raising funds.
Throughout this module, you will engage in business planning and strategic decision-making in projects that focus on the financial aspects of entrepreneurship in different contexts. This experience will give you confidence in planning and monitoring finances for your own future ventures and equip you to advise entrepreneurs on their financial decision-making options.
Global Business Knowledge and Mindset
Boost your CV by gaining international experience and earn credits towards your degree. You study abroad at a summer school at a partner university between your first and second year.
You will gain subject-specific business knowledge and experience studying in a different country and culture. You can choose from a wide selection of partner universities based on where you want to study and the subjects offered.
Some of your assessment will take place at the partner university. You will also write a reflective essay after you return to help you articulate what you have learnt during your time abroad. This will help you to link your experiences to employability for future interviews.
To complete your experience, you will participate in an online project during the semester, working with an international team of students. This project will help you develop a global mindset and build your communication skills as you work in a cross-cultural team, participating in a business game where you will complete challenges related to the global Sustainable Development Goals.

In finance, you will cover key areas of financial markets, including traditional equity, bond and currency markets as well as modern development such as cryptocurrencies. You will also tackle the fascinating subjects of capital investment decision-making, risk and return, and calculating the cost of capital. These are essential tools to help businesses plan for a profitable future.
International Business Environment
This module introduces the functioning of the global business environment and the implications for business. It uses relevant conceptual and analytical economic tools grounded in international political economy.
You will cover a range of important topics in international economics, including globalisation, the determinants of trade patterns and trade policies, exchange rate determination, the global factory and global supply chains, the growth of emerging economies, international knowledge flows, regionalism, and climate change.
Capstone Project
This project is an opportunity for you to draw on the knowledge you have gained through your course and apply it to a key problem or issue linked to your field of study. It serves as the culmination of your learning experience, enabling you to demonstrate the skills you have developed.
Enterprise Systems and Sustainability in Practice
This module introduces the business use and impact of information technologies (IT), with a particular focus on enterprise systems. It provides both theoretical knowledge and practical experience related to information systems within organisations, particularly how companies meet their integration needs. You will gain hands-on experience using an enterprise system, such as SAP, and managing a simulated business, like a virtual dairy company. This practical approach will help you to understand core business processes and the concept of integration.
We will also explore how digital technologies support sustainable business practices, highlighting the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the increasing pressure on companies to adopt eco-friendly strategies. You will develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and dashboards to help make data-driven decisions about sustainability. You will need to manage these elements carefully to run a sustainable and profitable business, gaining practical insights into how companies can reduce their carbon footprint and improve their sustainability performance.
Managing People and Change
Organisational change is a defining feature of modern life. It can be disruptive but also creative, affecting how organisations reproduce, stabilise and evolve themselves and their environment. You will explore key concepts related to approaches to change, particularly those at the individual and group level. You will focus on managing people and change in an increasingly technologically mediated world. Additionally, you will develop informed opinions about change theories, helping you understand and implement change through negotiating dynamic interactions between people.
Power, Technology and Society
This module critically examines the relationship between technology, power, and society. You will challenge the conventional view of technology as a neutral force, exploring its profound impact on work, organising, and social inequalities, including those related to gender, race, disability, and coloniality. You will investigate the complex interaction between technological development and societal structures.
You will learn to analyse dominant narratives surrounding technology, examining diverse perspectives. A key focus will be on developing your ability to critically examine the discourses and applications of technology. This will encourage you to question your own assumptions and those of others.
By the end of the module, you will gain tools to contextualise how technology is discussed, deployed, and experienced within contemporary organisations and society.
Technological Futures
You will learn how to think about the role of technology in shaping futures for organisations and societies. You will explore how different potential futures can be imagined, understood, predicted, and brought into being. You will also examine how values, beliefs, and morals are built into technological futures and how they can mirror or contribute to the perpetuation of increasing inequalities.
This topic is particularly important as emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology, are rapidly transforming the way we live, work, and interact, particularly in a context of environmental and political instability. The lectures and workshops will be interactive, multi-modal, and practical, featuring a variety of exercises based on design studio principles. These activities will help you understand and employ different ways of thinking about technological futures.
Contemporary Issues in Marketing
This module explores some of the most pressing issues that marketers face today. Topics might include digital transformation, sustainability, inclusivity or changing consumer values. You will be encouraged to reflect critically on the role of marketing in society and consider how your own practice can contribute to a more responsible future.

This module is designed to promote independent learning and allow you to apply the knowledge and skills from your degree to understand and analyse contemporary policy issues. You will be able to independently produce both written and verbal reports on current policy topics that are accessible to policymakers and senior managers in both the private and public sectors. By examining the concept of ‘good growth’, we will highlight the need for entrepreneurs to lead change in ways that promote a more sustainable future for the organisation, its stakeholders and the wider world.

These are the big questions that this module will explore, addressing how past visions of technological futures inform the speculative digital landscapes we imagine today. This module examines the social, cultural, and political implications of these technologies, addressing issues such as personalisation, surveillance, platform governance, and digital inequalities. You will explore critical debates on issues such as automation, data governance, digital labour, and ethics while reflecting on the future of digital media in everyday life.

Additional costs
There may be extra costs related to your course for items such as books, stationery, printing, photocopying, binding and general subsistence on trips and visits. Following graduation, you may need to pay a subscription to a professional body for some chosen careers.
Specific additional costs for studying at Lancaster are listed below.
College fees
Lancaster is proud to be one of only a handful of UK universities to have a collegiate system. Every student belongs to a college, and all students pay a small college membership fee which supports the running of college events and activities. Students on some distance-learning courses are not liable to pay a college fee.
For students starting in 2026 or 2027, the fee is £40 for undergraduates and research students and £15 for students on one-year courses. Students on some distance-learning courses are not liable to pay a college fee.
Computer equipment and internet access
To support your studies, you will also require access to a computer, along with reliable internet access. You will be able to access a range of software and services from a Windows, Mac, Chromebook or Linux device. For certain degree programmes, you may need a specific device, or we may provide you with a laptop and appropriate software - details of which will be available on relevant programme pages. A dedicated IT support helpdesk is available in the event of any problems.
The University provides limited financial support to assist students who do not have the required IT equipment or broadband support in place.
Study abroad courses
In addition to travel and accommodation costs, while you are studying abroad, you will need to have a passport and, depending on the country, there may be other costs such as travel documents (e.g. visa or work permit) and any tests and vaccines that are required at the time of travel. Some countries may require proof of funds.
Placement and industry year courses
In addition to possible commuting costs during your placement, you may need to buy clothing that is suitable for your workplace and you may have accommodation costs. Depending on the employer and your job, you may have other costs such as copies of personal documents required by your employer for example.
What is my fee status?
The fee that you pay will depend on whether you are considered to be a home or international student. Read more about how we assign your fee status.
Fees in subsequent years
Home fees are subject to annual review, and are liable to rise each year in line with UK government policy. International fees (including EU) are reviewed annually and are not fixed for the duration of your studies. Read more about fees in subsequent years.
Fees for study abroad and work placements
We will charge tuition fees to Home undergraduate students on full-year study abroad/work placements in line with the maximum amounts permitted by the Department for Education. The current maximum levels are:
Students studying abroad for a year: 15% of the standard tuition fee
