Transcript for Finance at Lancaster University
So when I first came thinking I'll be doing Finance, I really thought it would just be all about sitting and solving questions and just mugging up stuff. But when I actually started doing the programme, I would say that I learned a lot. Not only about the course itself, but about how to deal with different situations and professional life. So that kind of shapes you as a person and it teaches you how to do more in-depth study.
Many people end up thinking that Finance is all about numbers and stuff of that sort, but that's not really true. It's not all about exams and numbers and solving papers. You get coursework about real-life scenarios, so that really gives you an insight into professional life.
The Finance programme is one of the most attractive programmes the Accounting and Finance Department can offer you. So three components over there I would have to say. One is this theoretical foundation, a very solid one, the asset price and corporate finance, which is related to today's practice. The second one will be hardware skills. I would emphasise the hardware skills we do on Bloomberg terminals, related to Python training, which means artificial intelligence in finance applications and machine learning stuff, which is really popular in today's frontier practice. And the third one would be software skills. We have very strong industry connections. We have case studies related to courses to help students build teamwork, problem-solving skills and also develop how you interact with industry partners through the industrial speaker series.
I would say one of the best experiences I've had on the course was a sort of game simulation where we had to do investment and asset management. Like you could experience both sides of the real world. But again, as it was a simulation, it was really fun, like, you know, competing with friends, doing some sort of trading and getting an insight of how stock markets and the financial markets work in general. And honestly, it helped me a lot in just getting an idea of how things are in real life and how quick things are, it just literally boosted my interest in the subject even further.
As a director, I'm expecting a top graduate or above average graduate at the end of the day. So they will be equipped with all of these fundamental hardware skills in Python programming, Bloomberg terminals, Morningstar is today's finance industry standard, so meaning they will be ready to compete for the best job in the industry, and as it will be trained for teamwork, communication ability and especially how do they, when they receive a new task, new problem, how they solve these problems creatively.

College fees
Lancaster is proud to be one of only a handful of UK universities to have a collegiate system. Every student belongs to a college, and all students pay a small college membership fee which supports the running of college events and activities. Students on some distance-learning courses are not liable to pay a college fee.
For students starting in 2026 or 2027, the fee is £40 for undergraduates and research students and £15 for students on one-year courses. Students on some distance-learning courses are not liable to pay a college fee.
Computer equipment and internet access
To support your studies, you will also require access to a computer, along with reliable internet access. You will be able to access a range of software and services from a Windows, Mac, Chromebook or Linux device. For certain degree programmes, you may need a specific device, or we may provide you with a laptop and appropriate software - details of which will be available on relevant programme pages. A dedicated IT support helpdesk is available in the event of any problems.
The University provides limited financial support to assist students who do not have the required IT equipment or broadband support in place.
Study abroad courses
In addition to travel and accommodation costs, while you are studying abroad, you will need to have a passport and, depending on the country, there may be other costs such as travel documents (e.g. visa or work permit) and any tests and vaccines that are required at the time of travel. Some countries may require proof of funds.
Placement and industry year courses
In addition to possible commuting costs during your placement, you may need to buy clothing that is suitable for your workplace and you may have accommodation costs. Depending on the employer and your job, you may have other costs such as copies of personal documents required by your employer for example.
What is my fee status?
