Ever wondered how to become an architect - or how design can change the way people live, work, and connect
On the BA Architecture course at Leeds Beckett University, you'll explore architecture as both a creative act and a powerful social force while working towards RIBA Part 1. You'll think critically, design boldly, and respond to real-world challenges, developing ideas that reimagine places, identities, and communities.
At the heart of this architecture course is studio practice. This is where concepts become architecture. You'll sketch, model, test, and refine your ideas using a rich mix of drawing, digital technologies, and hands-on making, transforming imagination into purposeful, responsible design solutions. From climate-responsive architecture to the cultural and social impact of the built environment, you'll investigate how buildings can shape a more sustainable and equitable future.
As part of this BA Architecture degree, you'll:
* Tackle ambitious, real-world design briefs addressing sustainability, climate change, and architecture's social impact
* Develop creative and technical knowledge and skills in architectural design, model-making, building technology, history, and global theory
* Understand the environmental, cultural, and social forces that influence places and spaces
* Build a bold, professional portfolio through studio projects, live industry briefs, and guest lectures
* Learn within an energising studio culture, where creativity, technology, theory, and problem-solving collide
Creative learning community
You'll join a collaborative architecture community within Leeds School of Arts , taught by industry experienced architects and designers in well-equipped studios and workshops designed to mirror professional practice. Through seminars, guest lectures , site visits, and live client projects, you'll experiment with your ideas beyond the studio and gain first-hand insight into how architecture operates in the real world.
In your first year, you'll study alongside students from our Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture courses, creating a vibrant, collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that mirrors how architects work in practice.
Professional experience and development
Understanding the profession is key to success. The course builds your understanding of how an architect operates within the construction industry. This includes knowledge of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) , and how this degree contributes to becoming a qualified architect.
Professional body exemptions
Our BA (Hons) Architecture course is validated by RIBA , providing Part 1 accreditation.

By the end of the module, you'll have expanded your ability to translate abstract concepts into realised forms, laying a foundation for thoughtful and well-crafted spatial design solutions.
Context & Theory 1 introduces the question of modernity and its enduring architectural and environmental effects. It offers historical and theoretical reflections on the development of the modern world. You'll study the concepts of the urban realm and reflect critically on architectural histories and theories focused on design projects. Building on this, you'll also interpret and identify the notions of modernity, modernism, and the contemporary in relation to architectural and urban thinking.
In this module, you'll be introduced to passive and active environmental systems. This knowledge will equip you with a toolkit of strategies for reducing operational energy consumption. You'll begin applying the fundamentals of climate literacy to design proposals, exploring the primary relationships between people and their environments. Upon completion, you'll be able to critically assess how technological design choices impact society, as well as built and natural environments.
In Design Projects 4, you'll engage with medium-scale existing buildings to create a project brief that incorporates a social and/or environmental agenda. Emphasis is placed on understanding the context and histories of the site, enabling you to propose thoughtful and contextually appropriate design interventions.
Through a series of lectures, workshops and tutorials, you'll develop and refine your design proposals to ensure coherence between the brief, concept, functional, technical and environmental requirements. This module supports you in exploring detailed design development, equipping you to produce well-resolved architectural interventions.
In Context & Theory 2, you'll engage with cutting-edge contemporary architectural theories, discourses, and ideas. The module challenges you to question the future of architecture through environmental and spatial issues, as well as critical and creative approaches to design. You'll identify, gather, and evaluate information and material from a range of primary and secondary sources.
With this foundation, you'll begin to draw critical connections between your findings, develop informed conclusions, and emphasise the relationship between theory and design.
This module introduces you to a range of structural and material systems for construction. You'll explore how the choices between these systems impact the relationships between people and their environments, both built and natural. As you progress, you'll begin to understand the technological strategies that can be applied to statutory frameworks. You'll also consider using appropriate materials, technologies, assembly, prototyping and fabrication techniques, for specific design proposals.

Explore and critically evaluate an existing site, examining its history and context to inform appropriate architectural propositions. During Thesis 1, we'll consider a range of global, cultural, social, and economic factors that shape the built environment. You'll then investigate how these influence design through the perspectives of end users and stakeholders.
As you progress, you'll deepen your understanding of social sustainability, social value, and inclusive design, and how these principles inform the development of your project brief and narrative. To conclude, you'll produce an initial architectural proposition that responds innovatively to both global and local challenges.
In this module, you'll build on your previous studies in context and theory by undertaking your own independent research and producing an extended essay. The module allows you to explore topics that align with your level 6 interests in design, histories, and theories. You'll be supported by tutors with a broad range of research specialisms, who will offer relevant expertise and guide you in developing your own research projects.
This module introduces the broader context of architectural practice helping you to understand the role of the architect. You'll develop an awareness of the collaborative and multifaceted practice of design and its integral specialisms and means of resolution. We'll pay particular attention to the importance of regulation, organisation, architects code of conduct, and the financial implications of design.
Upon completion, you'll be able to work responsibly, reflectively, and ethically, equipped with sound judgement, acknowledgement of competences, and a personal and collective responsibility for project process and outcomes.
Select, gather, evaluate, prioritise, and organise relevant information and material to inform your architectural design approach. Your proposal should establish how the design process translates into a physical, material form – both strategically and in detail. You'll then explore, test, make, and resolve design challenges across scales from micro to macro, while adhering to relevant legislation and the desire for zero-carbon design.
For the integrated technology part of the module, you'll examine and articulate how technological solutions are implemented within your thesis 2 design project.

> Our fantastic BA (Hons) Architecture course provides a rigorous foundation for architectural practice, enabling students to critically evaluate design principles and understand architecture's wider social, environmental, and professional contexts. A shared first year fosters interdisciplinary knowledge, professionalism, and employability, while diverse design studios allow students to explore architecture at varying scales and complexities.
