Music careers rarely fit into one box. Today's artists perform live, produce their own tracks, collaborate across genres, and need to adapt quickly to new opportunities. BA Music Performance & Production reflects that reality.
You'll combine theory, history, composition, and technique to develop as a confident performer, then expand your practice with production and creative technologies. From rehearsals and concerts to studio sessions and digital releases, you'll work across live and studio environments, gaining hands-on experience from day one.
Working on projects shaped around industry practices, you'll collaborate with other creatives, test your own ideas, and refine your creative direction. Along the way, you'll build a strong portfolio using professional facilities - showcasing what you can do, how you work, and where you want to go next.
As part of this course, you'll:
* Hone your performance skills - live and in the studio - developing confident, adaptable musicianship and a professional-standard portfolio
* Explore specialist modules covering topics like radio and podcasting, music copyright, and how the music industry operates online
* Produce, record, and refine your music using industry-standard software and equipment
* Collaborate with other creatives on shared projects and real-world briefs
* Explore how music careers really work - from freelance practice to creative industries - and how to get to where you want to be
Learn by making music
This course is built around practical study. You'll spend time rehearsing, recording, producing, and performing in professional studios and spaces . Your learning happens through making and reflecting on real creative output. Explore examples of student and alumni work by visiting our Spotify playlist .
Choose where you go
As you progress, you'll lean into your strengths and passions, whether that's live performance, studio production, songwriting, or creative technology. Optional modules in your second and final years let you tailor your studies to match your ambitions, rather than following a fixed creative path.
Work the way professionals do
You'll use industry-standard tools and workflows, developing fluency with the software and equipment used in real studios and live settings. Your projects reflect how musicians work in practice - managing deadlines, collaborating with others, and responding to creative briefs.
A creative city to enrich your experience
Leeds is known for its thriving music scene and active creative culture, providing opportunities for you to perform, collaborate, and build professional connections. You'll be encouraged to engage with what's happening around you, broadening your experience beyond the classroom.
Build experience that counts
Live briefs, performances, and project-based assessments help you develop a stand-out portfolio that demonstrates both skill and versatility. Guest speakers and industry engagement bring professional insight into your studies, keeping your learning grounded in current practice.
Artist in Residence Programme
Our Artist in Residence programme enables you to work with professional artists, giving you a taste of what it's really like to work on live music projects. In previous years, we've welcomed: Cherry Seraph, Chris T-T, Ian Prowse, I Monster, Tom Williams, and Utah Saints.
