Robots are transforming the world. They explore space, power global manufacturing, and transform how we live. If you want to design, build, and program intelligent machines, our specialised Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) -accredited robotics degree is the perfect place to start.
From responsive robotic arms to autonomous vehicles and AI-driven automation, the future depends on engineers who can blend creativity, scientific expertise, and problem-solving.
In specialist robotics engineering facilities , you'll explore how machines think, move, and interact with the world. You'll combine ideas from mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering with artificial intelligence to create innovative automated solutions to real challenges.
As part of this course, you'll:
* Design, build, and program your own robots, applying robotics and automation theory in hands-on workshops and projects
* Explore the past, present, and future of developments in robotics and automated systems
* Master electronics, programming, and systems engineering to create smart, connected machines
* Use AI and machine learning to solve complex robotics challenges
* Develop and test embedded systems that power intelligent, responsive devices
This robotics course gives you the skills, confidence, and industry credibility to become a robotics engineer, automation specialist, or AI developer, ready to shape the next wave of innovation.
Future-proof your career
BEng (Hons) Robotics & Automation is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) , meaning what you learn matters in the real world. When you graduate, you'll meet the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status – boosting your credibility and opening the door to a wide range of professional engineering careers.
Learn by doing
You won't just learn about robots, you'll build them. In our specialist facilities , you'll work with industry-standard software and hardware to design systems that think for themselves. Through practical workshops and lab-based projects, you'll gain skills in:
* Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA)
* Embedded systems development
* Building AI and machine learning for autonomous robots
* Designing programmable logic controllers (PLC) and highly automated control systems
Insightful fieldtrips
You'll also go on exciting industry visits to gain first-hand insight into how robotics and automation power modern manufacturing. Previous students have visited sites such as Yorkshire Tea and a Coca-Cola bottling plant.
Build the skills employers want
Alongside technical and scientific expertise, you'll develop the professional skills that set great engineers apart: teamwork, project management, innovation, and the ability to communicate complex engineering ideas clearly. An optional placement year enables you to apply your learning in industry, build real experience, and explore careers in robotics, automation, systems engineering, or advanced manufacturing.
Join a student society
Connect with peers who share your passion for technology by joining a student society like the Computing and Engineering Students' Community or the Ethical Hacking Society . * Field trips and site visits - your travel and entry costs will be covered for an annual field trip. You'll need to cover other costs dependent on details and location. For example, this could include paying for your lunch.
* You'll need a laptop running Windows 10. You can borrow one from the university free of charge should you choose to not purchase your own. All our computer labs also run the operating system you'll need.
Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations).
Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus.
Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
This list is not exhaustive, costs are approximate and will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees. If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.

> I enjoyed my experience studying BEng Robotics & Automation. The teachers were very supportive and have plenty of experience but more importantly, passion for what they do. The industry is quickly developing, so the course is very diverse subject wise. You get to learn a bit of everything which really shapes what direction you want to go to after you graduate. The engineering showcases opened up lots of opportunities to network, which helped me land many contacts and my first job in the industry."
