Accreditation
In order to qualify as an actuary, you will be required to pass the professional examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Specific modules in all three years of the BSc Actuarial Science degree give you the opportunity to earn exemptions from six of the seven core principles stage subjects.
Course objectives
If you enjoy mathematics, statistics, probability and economics you will find this course ideal. For the duration of your degree, you’ll delve deeper into these core subjects, as well as stochastic models, finance and financial reporting, business and, naturally, actuarial science itself.
You’ll also produce a self-researched final-year project on an area that interests you and reflects your ambitions.
This degree provides students with the skills to start their actuarial career, with the added flexibility of allowing students to alternatively use these skills to enter risk management, investment management or financial analysis upon graduation.
It can provide up to six exemptions from subjects CM1, CM2, CS1, CS2, CB1 and CB2 of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ examinations.

Course content
What will I learn?
Develop your knowledge and understanding of actuarial science, statistics, mathematics, finance and related disciplines
Develop your ability to communicate your knowledge and understanding effectively
Develop your understanding of the roles of mathematical and statistical calculation, analysis and judgement in actuarial science and financial risk management
Develop your ability to make reasoned judgements, frame appropriate questions and draw independent conclusions
Equip you with the skills required to work professionally as an actuary or in alternative fields related to statistics, finance, risk management and in general management
Prepare you to enter postgraduate study in actuarial science or related disciplines.
Course structure
Core modules:
Mathematics for Actuarial Science
This module aims to equip you for the technical demands of the actuarial subjects in the first year of the degree and beyond.
To begin with, it consolidates your prior knowledge of mathematics; after that it ensures that you are familiar with the ways in which mathematicians prove their results, with differentiation and integration involving one or two variables, and with a variety of mathematical techniques which will be referenced in future modules.
Microeconomics for Actuarial Science
The Introduction to Microeconomics module provides a foundational understanding of how individuals and firms make decisions and how these decisions interact in markets. This course covers key concepts such as supply and demand, market structures, consumer behaviour, production and costs, and the role of government in the economy.
Through a combination of theoretical frameworks and real-world applications, students will gain insights into the functioning of markets and the economic forces that shape our daily lives.
Macroeconomics for Actuarial Science
The module enables you to acquire an understanding of the operation of the macroeconomic environment. It covers key topics such as national income, inflation, unemployment, economic growth, and monetary and fiscal policy. Through theoretical frameworks and real-world applications, students will learn how to analyse economic indicators and understand the impact of government policies on the economy.
The module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to critically evaluate macro-economic issues and contribute to informed policy discussions.
Probability and Statistics 1 with R
This purpose of this module is to provide you with the fundamental tools in probability and statistics which are necessary for the understanding of modules later in the programme. Part of it also covers part of the material for Core Statistics subject 1 of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and contributes to the exemption. You will also gain some experience of programming in R, a key statistical package.
Introduction to VBA and Career Planning
This is a compulsory module for the BSc Actuarial Science. The actuarial industry is keen to recruit students who are self-aware and have an understanding of their future careers aspirations. As such, this module raises awareness of your career options within and outside of the actuarial profession and covers presentation skills, interviews, CVs, cover letters and communication skills.
In addition, VBA skills are highly prized in the actuarial and finance fields and this module will teach you these skills making you more employable.
Financial and Investment Mathematics with Excel
The work which actuaries do often involves placing a value now on a series of payments which are to be made in the future. This module is key to understanding how actuaries can do this in practice. In other words, this module will allow you to understand how we can use compound interest theory to assess the value of investments and projects which are taking place over a period of time.
It also covers part of the material for Subject CM1 (Actuarial Mathematics) of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and contributes to the exemption.
Career Activation Programme
As a City St George's undergraduate student you have the award winning* Career Activation Programme in your course. This means that you have a core module in which you'll learn about your career options for your subject and how to stand out to employers and you'll gain professional experience during
your course, either by completing a work-based learning module or a year placement. More details about the Career Activation Programme, and view the Career Activation Programme modules for your course.
*ISE Best University and Employer Engagement Strategy 2024
In your second year of study students will take a total of 6 Core Modules and 2 Elective Modules.
Calculus and Linear Algebra (Mathematics 2)
This module will cover more advanced techniques in calculus and linear algebra that will be used in your other modules on the degree.
Contingencies
This module will combine the ideas of probability and financial mathematics to allow you to start valuing payments that are contingent on particular events occurring. In this module we will mainly be using the techniques to value life assurance products. This module covers part of the CM1 course of the IFoA.
Probability and Statistics 2
The module seeks to explain the properties of probability distributions. It covers elements of probability theory and statistical methods that are fundamental knowledge in the field of actuarial science. The module covers the second part of the Actuarial Profession’s Subject CS1.
Fundamentals of Finance
The aim of this course is to provide you with a basic understanding of the various types of instrument used by companies to raise finance from both the company’s and investors’ perspectives. In addition, we will also see the role of regulation in the financial markets.
Mathematical Statistics
The module covers the third part of the Actuarial Profession’s Subject CS1. The module builds on AS1005 Probability and Statistics 1, taught in Stage 1, and is a partner module to AS2115 Probability and Statistics 2. It is fundamental to all further study of statistical methods and, in particular, is a prerequisite for Statistical Modelling (the fourth part of the Actuarial Profession’s Subject CS1), a core module at Stage 3.
Stochastic Models
This purpose of this module is to introduce you to a number of elementary stochastic models which will be used throughout the remainder of the Actuarial Science degree, along with techniques for fitting the models to data and simulating them on a computer. The module covers part of the material required for the Core Statistics subject 2 of the examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and contributes to the exemption from the subject.
Elective Modules
Financial Economics
Corporate Risk Management
Decision Analysis
Derivatives, Trading & Hedging
Risk Analysis and Modelling
Financial Reporting
Python, R and Data Structures
Python, R and Databases
Financial Econometrics
Mentoring & Coaching
Microplacement*
*Further details of the Microplacement module can be found in the What placement opportunities are available section below.
In your third year of study students will take a total of 5 Core Modules and 4 Elective Modules.
Advanced Contingencies
This module teaches the third part of the material required to cover Core Mathematics subject CM1, for the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' professional exemptions.
Statistical Modelling
This module will provide a further continuation in your development in the areas of probability and statistics. In particular, we give you an introduction to several advanced statistical techniques as applied in the actuarial field. This module completes the CS1 course of the IFoA.
Time Series and Machine Learning [CS2d]
The module covers part of the material required for the Core Statistics subject 2 of the examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and contributes to the exemption from the subject.
Survival Models
This module covers the second part of Subject CS2 for exemption from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' professional examinations.
Probabilistic Modelling
The module forms the fourth and final part of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ Subject CS2. It aims to give you further information on the way that general insurance companies deal with risk, including the risk of receiving very large claims, and to explain the operation of reinsurance.
