BTEC Subsidiary Diploma considered in combination with 2 A Levels.
Grades: BEng; D* plus A A including A level Mathematics.
### Bachelor guarantee
If you don’t quite meet the entry requirements for the MEng but do achieve the grades needed for the BEng you’ll still have a guaranteed place on the BEng so long as we are your firm choice on UCAS.
You could also have the chance to transfer back to the MEng later on, depending on academic performance.
### Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Applicants who take the EPQ and meet our offer criteria will be made the typical offer for their programme of choice, plus an alternative offer which will be one grade lower plus a grade B in the EPQ. This offer would apply if you make Birmingham your firm choice.
### Music performance
Applicants who have achieved (or who will achieve) any level 3 graded examination in music performance at grade 8 or above (e.g. ABRSM, Rockschool, Trinity College London) and outline that on their UCAS application will be made the typical offer for their programme of choice, plus an alternative offer which will be one grade lower plus the Music qualification. This alternative offer would apply if you make Birmingham your firm choice.
### High-level sports
Applicants who play sport at county level or above will be made the typical offer for their programme of choice, plus an alternative offer which will be one grade lower. This alternative offer would apply if you make Birmingham your firm choice. If you have already received a one grade reduction through one of our performance athlete schemes (e.g. our Elite Dual Career Athlete Pathway programme), then you will not receive an additional reduction - we will apply a maximum one grade reduction on an offer.
### Other accepted qualifications
Applicants taking any additional qualifications listed below, could be eligible for an offer reduced by one grade (including Mathematics)
* STEP paper with a grade 2

### Course structure
Discover your potential to solve complex engineering problems and global environmental and social challenges on our five-year MEng programme, enhanced by a full year of industrial placement in Year 3 or 4. Explore advanced and interdisciplinary modules, with design and sustainability woven throughout your studies.
Design runs through your studies in three Integrated Design Projects, where you will work in teams on open ended, real world challenges. You will use digital tools, including Building Information Modelling, from your first year, and explore the role of computer modelling and artificial intelligence in engineering practice.
The programme covers all six core areas of civil engineering: structures, materials, geotechnics, fluid mechanics, transport and construction, with sustainability and ethical practice woven through every year. In your final year you will specialise in one of four pathways: Civil and Ground Engineering, Climate Resilience and Environmental Systems, Transport Infrastructure or Future Infrastructure.
#### Year 1
In Semester 1, you will build foundational engineering skills, focusing on mathematical applications, mechanical principles, and digital skills.
Semester 2 progresses to explore fluid mechanics, electrical principles, and material properties.
Alongside learning theoretical principles, you will practically apply the skills you have developed in an Integrated Design Project that runs across both semesters, tackling real-world problems.
#### Year 2
During Semester 1 you will further your expertise in structural engineering, study environmental fluid mechanics, and explore construction practice, management and digital tools.
Semester 2 allows you to study soil mechanics and civil engineering materials, culminating in a collaborative Integrated Design Project to synthesise your learning and practise developing and delivering creative solutions for society.
#### Years 3/4
You will have the option to undertake a full year in industry, applying your academic knowledge in the real-world.
When you resume your study, you will deepen your knowledge of structural analysis and design, geotechnical analysis and design, water engineering, and transport systems engineering and design. You will complete a final Integrated Design Project tackling open ended, real world design briefs, and choose one optional module from applied mathematics and artificial intelligence, wind engineering and wind energy structures, or an industrial placement project.
You will also have opportunities to engage in computational modelling, further enhancing your technical and analytical skills.
#### Year 5
You will choose one of four specialist pathways aligned with your career ambitions: Civil and Ground Engineering, Climate Resilience and Environmental Systems, Transport Infrastructure, or Future Infrastructure. Each pathway combines three core modules with a 20 credit option, such as Industrial Project 2.
During your third year, you'll study six core modules (100 credits) as well as 20 credits of optional modules.
Your fourth year will be spent in industry, a placement that will be your responsibility to find, apply for and secure. You'll retain your undergraduate status with us at Birmingham. The Industrial Year placement may be taken before or after year 3.
