Title: Why Study Chemistry? | University of Birmingham
Duration: 01:34
[Bhumika] My name is Bhumika, and I study Chemistry with Business Management here at the University of Birmingham.
I've always been very passionate about studying chemistry.
My favourite aspect about studying Chemistry at the University of Birmingham is how supportive and accessible my lecturers are.
They are consistently available and genuinely interested in our success.
The second thing I really like is how well equipped our labs are.
This provides us an excellent opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge into real world experiments, which helps develop the essential transferable skills that are important in developing a career.
One of the great things about studying Chemistry at Birmingham is the facilities that we have available.
So, we have the wet lab.
We have the dry lab, we have the e-lab, and we have the new Molecular Sciences Building, which is the new home of Chemistry at the University.
So, all of these facilities put together, enables our learning and gives us a wonderful experience of studying Chemistry at the University of Birmingham.
My advice to prospective students would be to explore outside of your course.
The University has so much to offer.
You could write for Redbrick or our science magazine.
You could be a presenter on our radio show.
I would highly encourage everybody to get involved in everything that's on offer here at the University of Birmingham.
The School of Chemistry is constantly focused on improving the learning experience for its students, which makes them very receptive to feedback and means that our time at university is shaped by usKatie

Course structure
Immerse yourself in a course exploring the breadth and depth of chemistry alongside business management, integrating skills and careers development with core theory and hands-on lab classes.
Customise your learning experience with options modules and engaging research projects to explore the frontiers of chemistry as well as its intersection with other disciplines.
All students take the same modules in year 1 to develop a comprehensive understanding of the core concepts, in inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry and data analysis, that underpin more advanced study across the breadth of chemistry.
Your classes will help you develop independent problem-solving and critical analysis skills, all while building your communication, presentation and team-working skills. Practical classes are carefully designed to complement the lectures and build up your skills and competencies in the lab.
You'll also take business modules covering economics, finance, management and marketing taught by the experts in the School of Business here on the same campus (40 credits).
You’ll investigate broader aspects of inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, encountering topics of significance to professional chemists and exploring how these areas overlap and extend into other disciplines.
Research-linked experiments further develop your skills in experimental design and the interpretation of laboratory results. You'll further your understanding of business management with modules in economics and either human resource management or marketing.
Shape your own distinctive degree based on your interests and career ambitions through the chemistry options modules and your research project. The options modules cover advanced topics across the breadth of our research expertise, and include computational, energy, materials, medicinal and sustainable chemistry.
You’ll choose research projects from a range of lab-based to theoretical projects and that span core and multidisciplinary aspects of chemistry as well as educational and scientific outreach.
Modules in corporate finance and supply chain management, and strategic and innovation management will further develop your understanding of underpinning business models.
You'll focus on just Chemistry in your final year. You'll join one or more of the School's research groups in the Molecular Sciences Building to develop advanced research skills and undertake a project that is tailored to your interests and contributes to the School’s internationally leading research solving global challenges across the breadth of chemistry.
You'll also choose from the advanced chemical topics that reflect the state-of-the-art areas of research excellence in the School, and attend research seminars from leading academic and industrial visitors.

The CTL is a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the latest methods in laboratory teaching for STEM subjects. It enables you to benefit from transformational teaching in spaces designed to encourage and facilitate collaborative and inter-disciplinary working. We provide the environment and the technology to foster independent experimental thinking, with multi-use industry standard labs, built to help you excel in a STEM discipline.
Title: The Collaborative Teaching Laboratory
Duration: 02.38
Dr Scott. A White: The Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, or CTL, is the University of Birmingham's flagship STEM teaching facility.
We deliver unique and transformative practical teaching experiences for thousands of undergraduate students.
Mala Patel: We provide the environment and the technology to foster independent experimental thinking, with multi-use industry standard labs, built to help students excel in STEM disciplines.
Aditi: For me, it was really important to gain that lab experience, because it builds my skillset as a candidate further for when I do apply to industry.
Rebecca: Seeing the CTL on the Open Day and the facilities and lab space available was a big part of why I chose the University of Birmingham.
Dr Scott. A White: Our unique operational model ensures excellence in all aspects of the student experience, from timetabling through to delivery of practicals.
Mala Patel: Our team of skilled lab technicians work alongside our academic colleagues from the ground up.
We've designed engaging lab practicals that provide students with the skill and knowledge to thrive in industry or research.
Dr Scott. A White: And our dedicated EdTech and IT teams keep everything running, from innovative online learning materials that prepare students before they even step into the lab, to the technology infrastructure that powers it all.
Rebecca: We’re supported in a range of ways in our practicals.
So, if it's a new practical or piece of equipment, we get a demonstration.
We have staff support us on why we're doing the practical and the theory behind the results we get.
And also, if things go wrong, they're there to help.
Aditi: They are willing to step in and kind of guide me through my experiment.
They're able to provide the expertise, as well.
And when it comes to furthering my experiments, I’m more than able to go to a technician, ask for specific equipment available, and they're more than happy to provide that for me.
Mateja Milin: As a technician, my role is to support all aspects of teaching happening inside the labs and to ensure students’ satisfaction remains high.
It has been a very rewarding experience.
It has given me the opportunity to work with a large variety of industry-grade equipment, and it has helped me greatly expand on both my theoretical and practical knowledge and overall made me a better technician and a better engineer.
Mala Patel: CTL is much more than a building.
It is a collaboration between students, academics, and Professional Services staff to shape the engineers, scientists and researchers of tomorrow.
