Entry requirements
To secure a place at Birmingham, you'll need to meet our general entry requirements as well as those specific to your course.
AAB to include two science A levels, one from Biology or Chemistry plus another from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics or Psychology
6,6,5 at Higher Level, to include at least two sciences. 32 points overall.
BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate can be considered in conjunction with two science A levels.

Required subjects and grades
Two science A Levels to include one of Biology or Chemistry, plus another science from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted.
GCSE grade B/6 in Mathematics, and B/6 in Biology and Chemistry (or double award science) if not offered at a higher level.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma:
Overall score of 32 points, with minimum grades of 6, 6, 5 in higher level subjects, to include at least two sciences (from Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Mathematics (either Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation) and Physics).
Core Maths qualification
Applicants who take the Core Maths qualification and meet our offer criteria will be made the typical offer for their programme of choice, plus an alternative offer which will be one grade lower plus a grade B in Core Maths. If you are also taking A-level Maths, you will not be eligible for an alternative offer through studying Core Maths. This offer would apply if you make Birmingham your firm choice.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Applicants who take the EPQ and meet our offer criteria will be made the typical offer for their programme of choice, plus an alternative offer which will be one grade lower plus a grade B in the EPQ. This offer would apply if you make Birmingham your firm choice.

English language requirements
If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.
TOEFL iBT tests taken before January 2026: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking and 21 in Writing.
TOEFL iBT tests taken from January 2026: 4.5 Overall with no less than 4.5 in two skills and 4 in two skills
IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any band.
Pearson Test of English (PTE): PTE 67 with no less than 64 in all four skills.
Cambridge English(exams taken from 2015): Cambridge English: Advanced Minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component
Language Cert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 ‘Communicator’ with no less than 33 in each skill

Presessional English courses
If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September, including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.

香港／國際頁官方原文 We will consider holders of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) for entry to our undergraduate programmes with the grade equivalencies shown below (excluding Citizenship and Social and Development). A*AA = 5*55 AAA = 555 AAB = 554 ABB = 544 BBB = 444 Applicants for programmes with subject specific requirements will need to offer these as normal (please note that combined or integrated science will not normally be acceptable where a stated science is required i.e. Biology or Chemistry). Programmes requiring Mathematics as a specified subject will require both the Compulsory and either M1 or M2. Higher level Diplomas and Associate Degrees can be considered for year one entry. A typical requirement would be an average grade of B (70-79%) or a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 in a relevant subject.
