Product Design degree at UCA
Master through making, in workshops brimming with craft, curiosity, and experimentation on our BA (Hons) Product Design degree course.
The workshop is your classroom
Your studio sits right next door to the workshop and you’ll move constantly between designing and making, testing ideas physically within minutes of having them. Laser cutting, CNC milling, wood, metal, plastics, casting, 3D printing – it's all here, and it's yours to use.
See solutions nobody else can
The best product designers don't follow formulas. Over three years of relentless experimentation on this Product Design course – trying, breaking, discovering – you'll develop a creative intuition that lets you see solutions others miss. That's a skill that will convert client pitches, win awards, and make you impossible to ignore.
Big problems, not just pretty objects
In the second year of your Product Design degree, your projects shift from personal exploration to professional application. Working with UN Sustainability Goals, live competition briefs, and industry partners, you'll learn to apply your design thinking to problems that can make a difference to the world.
Try everything. Seriously, everything
One student spent weeks in the photography darkroom and came back with a completely new direction for their project. Another collected coffee grounds and ended up winning the Andersen EV competition at London Design Week 2024, with their bio-resin product. With small groups and huge facilities, you’ve got the space and freedom to follow your curiosity – wherever it leads.

What you'll study
Below is a breakdown of the modules you'll study as part of this Product Design degree.
BA (Hons) Product Design explores the design, development, and making of products that shape everyday life. The course is concerned with how objects are conceived, tested, produced, and experienced, and how design can respond responsibly to human need, environmental challenge, and technological change.
Year 1 establishes the foundations of product design practice through a supportive, studio-based environment focused on experimentation, skills-building, and confidence. You are introduced to core design processes including ideation, sketching, model making, material exploration, and basic digital workflows.
Year 2 develops your product design practice through engagement with more complex briefs, real-world contexts, and increasing professional responsibility. Design activity is grounded in fabrication, prototyping, and testing, with a strong emphasis on how ideas are realised materially and technically.
Year 3 centres on independent, critically positioned product design practice and the development of a clear professional identity. You define a personal area of interest and develop ideas through sustained creative investigation.
Please note, the content of the course may be subject to change. Curriculum content is provided as a guide.
Integrated foundation year (if undertaken)
UCA’s Integrated Foundation Year is designed to give you the skills you’ll need to start your degree in the best possible way – with confidence, solid knowledge of creative practice, study skills and more.
You’ll explore a range of creative techniques and develop your portfolio, with your chosen subject in mind. We’ll work with you throughout the year to ensure you’re on the right track and give you the tools to achieve your highest potential on your degree.
Find out more about the Integrated Foundation Year
Year one
Design 01: 30 credits
In Design 01, through a supported and scaffolded studio environment you are introduced to product design as a material and object-focused discipline, concentrating on how product designers think, test ideas, and make decisions through form, function, and use. Working within a shared project context, you explore relationships between body, scale, ergonomics, material, and form through iterative design processes. Studio activity centres on developing product ideas through sketching, model making, basic prototyping, and introductory digital techniques, using representation as an active design tool rather than a final outcome.
You are supported to apply foundational product design principles such as proportion, usability, material behaviour, and basic manufacturing logic as you develop simple product proposals. The module foregrounds product-specific thinking and judgement, helping you understand how function, user experience, and material choices are shaped through design decisions. Regular tutorials and structured feedback support you in building confidence and clarity, establishing a strong foundation for progression through the course.
Career Catalyst: Skills & Capability: 30 credits
Career Catalyst: Skills & Capability runs alongside Design 01 and supports the same project work from a complementary perspective, focusing on how you work and develop as a creative practitioner, aligned to professional standards. You are encouraged to experiment across a range of skills, tools, materials, and techniques, building confidence through testing, iteration, and hands-on exploration. The emphasis is on learning through doing, reflection, and process, rather than arriving at a resolved or polished outcome.
You develop feedback literacy, reflective habits, and communication strategies that help you understand and articulate your creative process clearly. Ethical, sustainable, and inclusive considerations are introduced as part of everyday creative decision-making, supporting you to think critically about how products are conceived, produced, and used. Together with Design 01, this module supports a holistic learning journey in which experimentation, reflection, and communication strengthen your emerging product design practice.
Design 02: 30 credits
In Design 02, you build on your foundational skills by developing product design proposals that respond to defined users, contexts, and constraints. Working within a shared project, you apply design thinking more intentionally, learning how product decisions are shaped by use scenarios, cultural context, material availability, and practical limitations. Studio activity focuses on testing and refining ideas through structured iteration, with increased emphasis on material selection, construction, basic manufacturing processes, and environmental considerations.
You develop greater confidence in product-specific representation, using sketches, models, prototypes, and digital outputs to communicate form, function, and user interaction. The module foregrounds how materials, construction, and use work together to shape product performance and experience, supporting you to make informed design decisions rather than purely intuitive ones. Through tutorials and feedback, you learn to manage a design project with increasing structure, rigour, and clarity.
Critical Cultures: 30 credits
Critical Cultures runs alongside Design 02 and supports the same project work from a complementary perspective, focusing on how context, culture, and values inform product design thinking. You are introduced to key cultural, historical, and contemporary influences on product and object design, learning how to analyse, interpret, and position design work rather than produce it. Through visual, textual, and material research, you develop critical and visual literacy, building confidence in referencing, argumentation, and articulation of ideas.
You explore how ethical, sustainable, and inclusive perspectives shape product design cultures and influence decision-making across design, manufacture, and consumption. The module supports you in communicating contextual understanding clearly through written, visual, or verbal formats appropriate to the discipline.
Together with Design 02, this module helps you move from intuitive making towards more informed, intentional, and critically grounded product design practice.
Year two
Design 03: 30 credits
In Design 03, you develop your product design practice through making, fabrication, and testing, working within a shared project situated in a defined community, industry, or user context. Studio activity is strongly fabrication-led, encouraging you to explore how product ideas emerge through material experimentation, prototyping, manufacturing logic, and iterative development. You translate briefs and external constraints into product propositions, testing ideas through sketches, models, functional prototypes, and digital techniques.
The module supports you in building increasing technical confidence, helping you select and apply materials, tools, and processes appropriate to the scale, use, and ambition of your project. You learn to integrate contextual and user research with hands-on experimentation, strengthening your design judgement and ability to resolve products through making. Design 03 foregrounds product design as a materially grounded and user-focused practice, preparing you to work with greater independence and technical complexity as the course progresses.
Career Catalyst: Communities & Influence: 30 credits
Career Catalyst: Communities & Influence runs alongside Design 03 and supports the same project work from a complementary perspective, focusing on how you operate as a collaborative and professional product designer within community, industry, or group contexts. You engage with external parameters that require adaptability, professional conduct, and clear communication, learning how product design practice is shaped by social, ethical, commercial, and organisational considerations.
The module emphasises teamwork, audience-facing communication, and contextual integration, supporting you to work effectively with others and respond to real-world expectations. You develop confidence in articulating ethical, sustainable, and inclusive approaches, and in justifying design values within collaborative and professional settings. Rather than assessing the product outcome itself, Creative Communities focuses on how you engage, communicate, and operate professionally.
Together with Design 03, the module connects product design practice to real audiences and purposes, strengthening your readiness for more complex and autonomous work later in the course.
Design 04: 30 credits
In Design 04, you develop product design proposals that respond to complex functional, material, technical, and contextual constraints, with a focus on transformation, identity, and user experience. Working within a shared project theme, you are challenged to design products or product systems that communicate clear design intent and respond thoughtfully to users, use scenarios, manufacture, and broader context. Studio activity emphasises strategic decision-making, requiring you to balance creativity with constraint while developing coherent and ambitious product propositions.
You apply material, ergonomic, environmental, and manufacturing strategies to test and refine performance, usability, and experiential qualities. Advanced representation methods, including sketches, prototypes, models, simulations, and digital outputs, are used as tools for design thinking rather than presentation alone. The module
supports you in integrating research, user insight, and experimentation into resolved product outcomes, encouraging independent judgement and preparing you for the autonomy required in final-year practice.
Brand – Identity - Experience: 30 credits
Brand – Identity – Experience runs alongside Design 04 and supports the same project work from a complementary perspective, focusing on how meaning, identity, and experience are understood and communicated in relation to products and systems. You investigate brand, narrative, and experiential values, learning how these shape user perception, audience engagement, and the interpretation of designed outcomes across design and commercial contexts.
The module emphasises research, analysis, and communication rather than design production, supporting you to articulate identity and experience through appropriate visual, verbal, or material strategies. You explore how cultural, social, ethical, sustainable, and inclusive considerations inform identity-driven product design, and reflect on how narrative, positioning, and value propositions influence creative practice and future professional pathways. Together with Design 04, the module strengthens your ability to connect product design with meaning and experience, preparing you for more autonomous and critically positioned work in Level 6.
Professional practice year (if undertaken)
You may enrol to undertake an additional ‘Professional Practice Year’ as an integral part of this course.
This will take place in year three. You will undertake a work placement with a subject appropriate employer to further develop your skills and CV.
Please note: If you are an international applicant, you will need to enrol onto the course ‘with Professional Practice Year’. It will not be possible to transfer onto the Professional Practice Year after enrolment
Year three
Creative Research: 30 credits
In Creative Research, you establish the direction and ambition of your Major Project through research-through-design, appropriate to the conventions of art and design research within product design. Rather than separating research from practice, you develop ideas through sustained creative enquiry, using experimentation, sketching, making, modelling, prototyping, simulation, and digital testing as active research methods. You investigate themes, contexts, users, systems, technologies, or product ecosystems relevant to your emerging interests, allowing design exploration to inform and shape your research focus.
You are supported to analyse research findings critically, helping you articulate a clear product design position and define the scope, opportunities, and constraints of your future project. The module emphasises independence, reflection, and professional judgement, requiring you to manage a self-directed research process with confidence and rigour. By the end of the term, you will have established a well- considered research direction that provides a strong intellectual and creative foundation for your Major Project in Term 2.
Career Catalyst: Futures & Direction: 30 credits
Career Catalyst: Futures & Direction runs alongside Creative Research and focuses on how you position yourself professionally and communicate your work to external audiences. Working from the same body of research and creative development, you begin to shape a clear professional identity as a product designer, considering how your skills, interests, and values translate into contemporary and future practice. The module supports you in producing resolved outputs that demonstrate autonomy, innovation, and clarity of purpose.
You reflect on professional contexts, explore appropriate modes of communication, and develop strategies for presenting your work confidently to diverse audiences, including industry, public, and academic contexts. Emphasis is placed on independent project management, ethical and inclusive reasoning, and future planning, helping you understand how your work operates beyond the academic studio. Together with Creative Research, the module ensures you are creatively, intellectually, and professionally prepared to move into the Major Project and beyond.
Major Project: 60 credits
The Major Project is the culmination of your degree and represents your most ambitious, resolved body of product design work. Working with full autonomy and self-direction, you develop, realise, and communicate an independent creative project that synthesises research, contextual understanding, experimentation, and critical reflection. The project demonstrates advanced product design capability, originality, and a coherent personal design position appropriate to the discipline. You apply advanced material, technical, digital, and representational methods to refine and resolve your work, using sketching, modelling, prototyping, testing, iteration, and evaluation to support decision-making. Throughout the term, you integrate research and contextual insight to justify design choices and articulate the conceptual, technical, and experiential foundations of your project.
The Major Project requires you to manage a complex creative process independently, exercising professional judgement, organisation, and sustained critical evaluation. Final outcomes are communicated clearly and professionally through appropriate physical, digital, and portfolio-based formats, demonstrating your readiness to graduate as a confident, critically aware product designer.

What careers can you do with a Product Design degree?
Your guide to creative and technical careers related to a degree in Product Design.
Is a creative arts degree worth it?
Choosing to study a creative arts degree is rarely a simple decision and is scarcely a purely financial one. For many, it’s driven by passion and a desire to build a career doing something expressive that gives them as sense of meaning. But alongside that passion often comes a practical question: will my degree actually improve my job prospects?
You may also like to consider further study at postgraduate level.
Please note: the data shown in the Pathways Graduate tool is based on a range of datasets, including the Graduate Outcomes Survey and occupational data from the Office for National Statistics. Salary data only includes graduates who report earnings in British pounds, but excludes statistical outliers. It also includes graduates who are self-employed or freelancing, which is common within the creative industries and can mean income varies over time.
