Teaching and assessment
Teaching
You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, industry visits and independent study, with plenty of opportunities to apply what you learn to real business situations.
Your learning will go beyond traditional lectures. You'll take part in live business challenges, consultancy projects, business simulations and collaborative problem-solving, giving you opportunities to test your ideas, make decisions and explore how businesses respond to real-world challenges.
We also use creative and playful approaches to learning where appropriate, helping you develop your confidence, creativity and ability to work with others. You'll be encouraged to look at business from different perspectives and consider how organisations can respond to the changing business landscape.
Seminars give you the opportunity to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You'll also have timetabled meetings with your academic mentor at least twice a year, giving you dedicated opportunities to discuss your progress and development.
You'll be taught in our learning spaces throughout your course, with access to a range of resources to support your studies.
Assessment
Assessment methods depend on the modules you will be studying. The primary methods of assessment are coursework and evaluative assignments, digital portfolio development, in-class tests, presentations (both individual and group) and examinations. Most modules include a tutorial-based assessment worth approximately 10%, giving you credit for applying your learning through practical classroom activities.
Learning support
In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include:
study skills such as reading, note-taking and presentation skills
written English, including punctuation and grammatical accuracy
academic writing and how to reference
research skills
critical thinking and understanding arguments
revision, assessment and examination skills
time management
Additional support
Our Student Inclusion Services support students with additional needs such as sensory impairment, or learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
Feedback
Your course will provide you with opportunities to test your understanding of your subject informally before you complete the formal assessments. Each module normally includes practice or 'formative' assessments for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark. There is a formal or 'summative' assessment at the end of each module and the grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. You will normally receive feedback on coursework assessments within 20 working days following the date of submission. Examination feedback may take a variety of formats. However, as a minimum, generic feedback will be made available to all students who take written examinations.
Independent learning
When not attending lectures, seminars, laboratory or other timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve utilising a range of digital resources including our virtual learning environment; reading journals, articles and books; working on individual and group projects; undertaking research in the library; preparing coursework assignments and presentations. Your independent learning will be supported by a range of excellent facilities. These include the library, open access computer facilities, informal learning zones, a range of laboratories and specialist teaching areas.
At Staffordshire Business School, you'll learn from people who don't just teach business – they live it, research it and work with it every day.
Our academic team brings together industry experience, research expertise and strong links with organisations across the UK and beyond. This helps ensure what you learn reflects both current thinking and the realities of today's business environment, with real-world examples and practical insights brought into your learning.
You'll be taught by specialists whose expertise reflects the subjects you study, giving you access to contemporary research, industry insight and different perspectives throughout your degree. Their experience and knowledge will help you understand how the theories and ideas you learn apply to the world of business beyond the classroom.
We're passionate about creating an engaging, supportive and student-focused learning experience, with staff who can support you as you develop your knowledge, confidence and professional skills throughout your degree.
Postgraduate researchers may also contribute to seminars under the supervision of the module leader, giving you further opportunities to engage with current research and different perspectives.

There are so many places I could access support and they were so friendly.
My experience as a mature student has been really excellent, so many good things happened. I came in with my confidence quite low and didn’t know whether I could cut it academically, it’s been a long time since I’ve done any studying. But that’s when the support really comes in, there are so many places I could access support and they were so friendly. It’s like a family, you’re not a number.
