Course content
Throughout the degree, you’ll take a variety of modules, giving you a broad knowledge of Computer Science.
If you choose to take a Foundation Year, we’ll build up your academic skills so you are ready to join the main degree programme. You’ll study topics in key areas, including emerging technologies, industry practice, networking, artificial intelligence, and cyber.
The first year of the BSc (Hons) Computer Science degree course includes aspects of software development, industry practice, networks, cyber, and artificial intelligence.
In the second year, core modules will make up 75% of your studies and will include tackling business computing projects, databases, and programming, and an option ranging from machine learning to digital forensics so you can tailor your course to your future career ambitions.
In your final year, you’ll delve deeper into your specialisms, as well expanding further on your general computing knowledge. Your course will culminate in a Final Project, which will be negotiated with your course leader. This is a great opportunity to explore a topic in depth and also good preparation if you want to continue studying at postgraduate level.
Students do all sorts of things for their Final Project, from going into aspects of software engineering through to exploring biometrics for cyber security. Some are inspired by their placement experience and even complete their project with support from their placement provider.

This module is intended to equip you with not only the knowledge but also the practical skills to be able to create and understand an enterprise grade network. The Syllabus incorporates the content of the Cisco CCNA qualification (Network fundamentals and routing/switching fundamentals). You will look at the transition which is taking place of moving corporate data and infrastructure to a Cloud based environment and ensuring that this meets the requirements of local legalization and locally defined security requirements. This module will make use of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Academic Learning Environment to allow students to build confidence in Cloud computing.
Module code: COMP40083
In this module, you will learn some fundamental mathematical principles of artificial intelligence and machine learning and learn and practice several techniques for building and testing machine learning models. You will also learn about the principles of an Artificial Neural Network and be able to articulate the operation of the fundamental components and how they interact. You will learn about evolutionary algorithms, techniques for building adaptive and self-learning ML models. You will also learn about how machine learning can be applied to search for optimal solutions using multiple agents. You will also learn fundamental principles of cyber security, as well as how these fit into the wider computing landscape. You will also learn about core cyber security technologies and techniques, and how these are used to secure a wide range of computational systems and networks.
Module code: COMP40085
In this module, you will begin an exciting journey of discovery that will lay the programming foundation for both your academic and professional career. You will focus on designing and developing programs in a current language, such as Java or Python, and web applications in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. On the way, you will also learn about analysing problems, modelling solutions, and testing programs. You will also experience industry-standard methods, and tools to develop applications.
Module code: COMP40086
This module will introduce to you real-world computing problems that exist in the business world. Case studies are extensively used in order you work within a team to investigate a problem and look to find best solutions from several options. In doing so you will develop both project management and research-based skills which will benefit you throughout your course. To help in your learning you will be provided accepted theory and approaches that you will attempt to put into practice. You will work within realistic teams with dedicated roles and will experience real world activities and tasks. Part of the module also focuses on careers and the requirements to gain the knowledge of background requirements within industry.
Module code: COMP40084
On this module you will learn why routing and switching are considered as part of the core of networking. Once the network is designed well for these technologies other features such as security can then be built upon this. This course will look in detail at the choices within routing and switching to see why design decisions are made and for you to understand these choices. The emphasis of this course will be from the viewpoint of a medium to large scale organisation.
Module code: COMP50121
In this module, you will develop the practical skills required to work as an ethical hacker and penetration tester. Teaching and assessment
Teaching
Teaching approaches can include for example formal lectures, group work, tutorials/practical sessions, seminars, workshops, directed and self-managed study, and research projects. Each of these will be used on your modules so you get the chance to learn as effectively as possible.
Assessment
This course has a rich diet of assessment methods, of which each is chosen to map to the teaching and expected learning. On this course you will undertake assessments of the following: Class tests (up to 1 hour), Practical assignment work (individual or group-based), Portfolio of work, Report (individual or group-based, and Presentations (individual or group-based)
Learning support
In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include study skills (including reading, note-taking and presentation skills); written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy); academic writing (including how to reference); research skills; critical thinking and understanding arguments; and revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management).
Additional support
Our Student Inclusion Services support students with additional needs such as sensory impairment, or learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
Feedback
Your course will provide you with opportunities to test your understanding of your subject informally (through formative feedback) before you complete the formal assessments. Each module normally includes practice or ‘formative’ assessments for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark, but are essential for you to develop academically as a student.
There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module and the grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. You will normally receive feedback on coursework assessments within 20 working days following the date of submission. The feedback you receive will help to focus you to achieve better grades on the next set of modules you study.
Independent learning
All students are encouraged to build on their independent capabilities in relation to their own learning development. Tutors will mentor, support and guide students with clear direction in relation to ‘out of classroom’ activities and expectations in order to allow students the capacity to meet the learning objectives of their modules and course of study.
Please note, teaching team staff members may change during your studies.
