What you'll study
You will begin your Business Computing degree by learning the fundamentals of computing, programming and understanding user requirements and design. In laboratory seminars, you'll apply this knowledge through hands-on practice.
As the course progresses, you'll be introduced to core concepts in mobile application development, application of AI and the fundamentals of digital business. These topics will help you build a solid understanding of computing essentials in a professional business context.
Throughout the course, you will also develop key professional skills essential for your future career. A group project focused on developing an effective solution to a real-world business problem will enhance your IT problem-solving abilities, as well as your teamwork and communication skills.
In the later stages of the course, you will explore advanced topics such as responsible computing design and business intelligence technologies. These modules will deepen your understanding of the challenges and opportunities businesses face in the digital age. You will also have the option to choose from a range of optional modules, allowing you to tailor your studies toward specific career interests.
For your final project, you will design and develop a comprehensive artifact that addresses a specific problem, an excellent opportunity to apply your learning and showcase your skills to potential employers.
Please note, we regularly review our course content to offer relevant, impactful and career-shaping learning. Therefore, the following modules are indicative and subject to change.
Compulsory modules
Computer Systems
You will be introduced to the basic concepts, architecture and components of computer systems including: information representation, operating systems, computer networks, distributed systems and cloud computing.
Programming
This module provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of Java programming language and object programming concepts. It will focus on the design and build of Java desktop applications using the Java Development Kit and popular Integrated Development Environments, following established industry standard methodologies. The module will have a strong emphasis on using OO modelling techniques to interpret and implement business related applications.
Skills for IS Professionals
This module will help you to gain a range of academic and transferable skills that will support your studies. Topics will include tools and techniques for managing small-scale projects, effective group-work strategies, employability and PDP, and skills in quantitative methods to lay the groundwork for future modules.
Data Science and Visualisation
Information Systems and Databases
You will gain the knowledge and skills to design and implement a relational database. This module will cover information security and database management issues and an awareness of the central role of relational and other types of databases.
User Requirements and Design
In this module, you will investigate user and business requirements and design an application that is both usable and enjoyable to use by utilising an array of prototyping methods in developing an artefact and conduct usability testing. Content will include: user requirements, personas, visualising the user experience, task models, information architecture, prototyping methods and usability testing.
Mobile Web App Development
This module will allow you to gain experience in developing mobile web applications and have an introduction to the tools, languages and design techniques required for building functional applications. During the module, you will gain exposure to a programming language that can support native mobile application development, and you will be introduced to the Model-View-Controller (MVC) software design pattern.
Artificial Intelligence
This module will introduce you to the fundamentals of AI, with a focus on:
the structures, resources and processes that together make up an "intelligent" agent
the techniques, models and tools that can be used to simulate the "intelligent" processes
the skills and capabilities necessary to critically review AI literature and/or products, to synthesise ideas, to systematically solve AI problems and to communicate effectively.
You will gain the knowledge and skills required to understand the fundamentals of AI, to solve real-world problems more “intelligently” and, ultimately, to build intelligent artefacts.
Currently popular approaches include statistical methods, computational intelligence and traditional symbolic AI. There are many tools used in AI, including mathematical optimisation, logic, probability, and many others. AI has become an essential part of the technology industry, providing the heavy lifting for many of the most difficult problems in computer science.
Cloud Computing
On this module, you will design and build cloud-based services and applications. The module introduces core concepts and technologies in cloud computing, distributed systems and security, providing a solid foundation in cloud architectures and their underlying principles. Through a comprehensive and systematic approach, you will explore various cloud architecture models, understand industry standardisation and practice major cloud provider platforms.
Digital Business
This module aims to equip you with knowledge and understanding of the e-business environment. You will be able to compare the efficacy of different business models for e-commerce, and identify and evaluate factors and technologies that contribute to effective online content. This will be aimed at marketing, communicating and building relationships with customers and help you understand the regulatory, ethical and security issues associated with digital business solutions.
Computing Group Project
The aim of this module is to provide you with the experience of working collaboratively as part of a project team. The module will provide opportunities for you to adopt different project team roles in order to deliver a solution for a real-world client.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence
This module will provide you with a deep understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) concepts, tools, techniques and their applications in solving real-world problems. You will develop practical skills in designing, implementing and evaluating AI-based solutions, gaining insights into both theoretical foundations and practical applications relevant to AI and data science. The module will cover extensive examples of applied AI and relate the covered topics to other modules within the programme providing a practical context from industry and day-to-day use of AI.
Business Intelligence Technologies
By taking this module, you will be introduced to machine learning and data mining techniques that are typically used in business applications. You will develop a toolbox of quantitative analytical techniques and skills from which you can build solutions for various business scenarios.
Responsible Computing
This module looks at the positive impact computing can have on real-world problems. You will investigate a case study to identify a problem to which you can apply your creative skillset, demonstrating your ability to provide ethical, sustainable and responsible solutions that communities can embrace.
You will investigate a topic of interest and prepare a project proposal. You will then present your ideas to the School for approval and, once this has been approved, you will begin a detailed literature review of your chosen field. You will choose and follow a suitable development methodology leading to an implementation which you will evaluate.
Optional modules
Machine Learning
This module is intended to cover fundamental theory and algorithms of machine learning, as well as recent research topics. Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence that provides systems with the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use it to learn for themselves.
Human-Centred Computing
This module is about human and technical aspects of interactive computing systems and organisations. In the course of taking this module, you'll consider the interplay between human users, designers, developers and computers. Therefore, its basis is in psychology and human factors as well as in software engineering and interaction design.
IT Consultancy
This module will enable students to learn and actively and critically apply business strategy concepts to diagnose, manage, design and change challenges by organisations. Concepts of consulting will be also analysed to provide students with a strong understanding of strategic approaches for managing consulting projects and managing client relationships.
Cyber Security
You will be introduced to fundamental cyber security concepts including cryptography, authentication, authorisation and auditing, with an emphasis on their application.
What our students say
2nd London university for student satisfaction - National Student Survey 26*
The best thing about this course is that we are very close as students and to the teachers. It's easy to get along with everyone. The lectures are excellent because the classes are small, and the workshops are very efficient, meaning you get one-to-one time with the teachers to make sure you understand everything.
