Level-6 Top-up Option
The Level 6 top-up pathway takes the existing structure of the BA (Hons) Media and Communication Level 6 and enhances it by creating a practically focused pathway that acts as a top-up degree. This is designed to appeal to and support students who have not studied our existing Level 4 and Level 5 but who have a strong interest in using media tools to create practical work. A further differentiator from the existing Level 6, is that international aspects of media will be emphasised in the theoretical modules (Research Project).
If you enrol on a top-up degree in September or October 2026, you will receive the Top-up Bursary, worth £2,000. The bursary is made up of:

What you'll study
This media degree's curriculum is organised around unifying blocks. In each semester, you can focus on developing your craft and critical skills on a specific theme/format, without feeling dispersed among many unrelated assessments.
The course features two customisable pathways - halfway through your studies, you have the opportunity to choose either the Media Production strand or the Media Studies strand.
Real industry work experience is guaranteed. Whatever the pathway you choose, there are a minimum of 40 hours of industry work placement, facilitated by the school's Placements team.
To ensure a top-notch learning experience, you have access to industry-standard studios, facilities and equipment (that you can book out) to develop your projects.
You can learn from a diverse group of established media practitioners and researchers in the field of Media and Communications. Take advantage of their practical and theoretical knowledge as well as their professional links in the UK and abroad.
On top of all this, the University of West London is a great place to study. Our campus is located in the heart of London’s media centre, close to two tube stations in the beautiful borough of Ealing.
Please note, we regularly review our course content to offer relevant, impactful and career-shaping learning. Therefore, the following modules are indicative and subject to change.
Compulsory modules
Video Documentary Production
This is an intensely practical module, which lays the foundation for video work later in L4, and in modules at L5 and L6, as well as for future employability. You will learn the basics of filming, including camera operation, lighting, and recording sound. You will also learn the basics of editing, including sound mixing for video, structuring and scripting, and how to research stories for video.
Introduction to Media Ethics
This module is an introduction to the field of media ethics and its repercussion in terms of policies and laws. You will critically analyse and participate on a range of historical and topical debates in the areas of policy and ethics in the field of media and communications, such as ‘freedom of speech’, ‘fake news’, ‘the role of the state’, ‘civil society’ and ‘digital citizenship’.
Video Production
Learn the basics of video production and film grammar, developing your skills as a filmmaker. Using hands-on exercises, you will learn photography, video, lighting, sound and scriptwriting.
Live Radio Production
This practical module will provide a foundation of live radio production skills. The module will take you through a range of radio aspects that are both behind the mic and production focused.
Podcasting
Dive into the world of audio production and storytelling through podcasts. Enhance your voiceover skills, audio recording, sound design and web design/publishing skills.
Thinking Through Film: Genre
This module introduces you to a range of cinematic and television genres, including horror, action, fantasy, science fiction and comedy. You will explore the visual, structural and thematic conventions that define genre and cinematic style, and you will examine why these conventions are considered culturally and industrially significant. In addition, the module will consider how genre conventions both reflect and shape social values, identities and power structures.
Through a critical lens informed by Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), you will evaluate how issues of representation—such as race, gender, sexuality, class and disability — are constructed, challenged or excluded within different genres. You will also learn how production techniques such as camera angles, lighting, and sound are used to support or subvert genre expectations in diverse narrative contexts.
During Year 2, you will complete the listed compulsory modules and one optional module.
Additionally, you will choose ONE course pathway - either Media Production OR Media Studies - to follow until the end of the course.
Each pathway contains two compulsory modules and a choice of one optional module. See below for more information.
