What you'll study
This degree offers a balanced and varied approach to acoustics. It will equip you with the skills and knowledge you will need to work within a variety of industries.
You will combine lectures and private study with practical work that will help you to apply your learning while developing your practical skills and experience through a combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on measurements.
As an acoustics engineer, it will be essential for you to work as part of a diverse team. This acoustics course will help you to examine the key collaborative, social and ethical considerations that you will likely encounter in your future career.
UWL's School of Computing and Engineering has links with RBA Acoustics, KP Acoustics, Head Acoustics, Meridian Audio and Spectral Measurements, among others. These organisations help to support our guest lectures, masterclasses and student visits, adding industry input to your learning experience. We will encourage you to build links with relevant industry bodies such as the Institute of Acoustics, the Audio Engineering Society and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
The school also holds a variety of industry-standard software and measurement equipment that you will have the chance to learn and operate to gain practical skills and knowledge of real-world acoustics engineering.
Please note, we regularly review our course content to offer relevant, impactful and career-shaping learning. Therefore, the following modules are indicative and subject to change.
Compulsory modules
Building Structure and Materials
This module provides an overview of the principal building materials used in construction and introduces key structural concepts such as bending moments and shear forces in simple structures. You will focus on selecting appropriate materials through studying the engineering performance characteristics, human comfort and sustainability considerations of those materials. The module also looks at repair and maintenance strategies, recycling and reuse of materials.
Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM)
On this module, you will train to use computer aided design (CAD). You will start by learning to use basic AutoCAD functions to produce 2D building design drawings, including floor plans, elevations and sections. Then, you will progress to applying AutoCAD Revit to produce more complicated and complete design drawings, including 3D views and assembly and part details.
Design Procedures and Procurement
This module will give you an overview of the design process, approaches to procurement and the constraints on these approaches. You will also examine the role of the project manager and learn to communicate using various methods appropriate to the role.
Engineering Software
The module will help you develop as programmer using C++ as a tool to build simple applications related to sound engineering. You will learn to specify, develop and test software to specified standards to meet a range of sound engineering needs.
Theory of Sound
The aim of this module is for you to understand the theories and parameters relating to sound engineering that apply to all areas of the course. The main subject areas include: human hearing, physics of sound, sound measurement and decibels, basic room acoustics and digital audio conversion.
Quantitative Tools for Audio
This module will equip you with the fundamental tools to understand and represent problems in sound engineering subjects such as acoustics, electronics and sound system design. Through exploring concepts like fractions, logarithms, trigonometry and more, it emphasises the practical application of these principles for solving real-world challenges.
Acoustics
The module will provide a detailed understanding of the principles of acoustics. These principles will be explored in the context of studios, concert halls and public spaces. You will focus on the control of sound in a space to a required specification and the prevention of interaction between isolated spaces.
Artificial Intelligence
This module will introduce you to the fundamentals of AI. You will gain the knowledge and skills required to understand the fundamentals of AI, to solve real world problem more “intelligently”, and ultimately to build intelligent artefacts.
Construction Law
During this module, you will have the opportunity to develop your awareness of how the law applies to all aspects of construction.
Electroacoustics
The module aims to provide you with a deep understanding of the design and performance of electroacoustic systems such as loudspeakers and microphones. You will explore and analyse the design and the behaviour of these systems and devices using theoretical analysis and industry-standard tools, software and processes.
Environmental Science and Building Services
This module will provide you with knowledge about environmental science to help understand concepts and principles of heat and thermal insulation, air movement and ventilation, moisture and condensation, noise and sound insulation, and natural and artificial light with various types of lighting design. You will also look at building services and how these are integrated in the design of buildings.
Mathematics for Audio and Signal Processing
This module aims to provide you with the fundamental signal theory and enable you to use basic mathematical methods to analyse audio signals in time and frequency domains. The module will introduce you to signal analysis, including the types of signals, properties and applications of signals and conversion between analogue and digital signals by signal sampling and quantisation.
Advanced Acoustics
The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the principles of noise control. The module will discuss types of noise and noise sources both in indoors and outdoors settings. The students will explore standard methods and techniques for the assessment of noise, as well as noise control strategies.
Audio Digital Signal Processing
This module will introduce you to the fundamentals of digital signal processing. You will apply this knowledge to sound as both a tool for developing audio effects but also for audio analysis. You will learn how to develop your own adaptive digital audio effect. Additionally, the module will look at convolution, filter design and audio restoration.
Construction Economics and Finance
On this module, you will learn the basic principles of economics, resource allocation, determining price and the factors that affect production. You will critically examine the economic effects of organisational practices and financing on the construction industry.
