Course summary
Biochemistry sits at the interface between the life sciences and chemistry, providing a broad education that allows you to explore the molecular mechanisms underpinning life. Our BSc (Hons) Biochemistry course is built upon a strong foundation of core scientific disciplines, including molecular and cellular biology, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, as well as analytical sciences.
As you progress through the course, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how diseases develop at the molecular level and how drugs interact with biological systems, insights that are particularly valuable in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. You'll explore applied areas such as bioinformatics, in silico protein-protein interaction studies, and bioprocessing, all of which are increasingly essential in modern biochemical research and development. A key focus of the course is the development of laboratory skills, with practical sessions embedded across nearly all modules. You’ll be trained to conduct experiments, analyse biochemical data, and interpret scientific results with precision.
Throughout your studies, you'll work on real world case studies with clear industrial relevance, and you'll engage in simulated professional scenarios through our mock pharmaceutical company, Sunderland Therapeutics. Assessments mirror real world tasks and aim to prepare you for a wide range of careers, whether in laboratory based research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or other sectors such as finance, business, and education. The course is also available as a four-year course with a full year spent on placement.
Graduates of this course leave with not only a deep scientific understanding but also highly transferable skills in problem-solving, data analysis, and communication, making them well equipped for diverse roles across the life sciences.
This course shares a common first year with BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science, which allows you to easily change course at the end of the first year should one of these routes appeal to you.Why Sunderland for Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Sciences

Introduction to Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic Regulations and Professional Skills Core30 credits+
The pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries are tightly regulated to ensure safe, effective products reach patients and consumers. Ever wondered how medicines and cosmetics are made safely? In this module, you’ll learn about important guidelines like Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), as well as specific rules for cosmetics, like the Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR). You’ll also explore continuing professional development, gaining valuable skills that will support your career throughout your degree and beyond.
Introductory Chemistry for Pharmaceutical and Biological Science Core30 credits+
Ever wondered how chemistry helps create new medicines? In this module, you’ll explore the basics of chemistry that support drug discovery and biological science. You’ll learn about bonding, acids and bases, how fast reactions happen, and why they release or absorb heat. You’ll also dive into organic chemistry by making simple molecules and using tools to see what they’re made of.
Introductory Pharmacology, Physiology and Anatomy Core30 credits+
In this module, you’ll learn how the human body functions, focusing on the roles of different organ systems. You’ll also discover how various drugs can change the way our body responds. By the end, you'll have a solid foundation of knowledge that you can build on in future studies.
Introductory Molecular and Cellular Biology Core30 credits+
What makes up all living things and how do tiny cells do such big jobs? In this module, you’ll learn what life is made of and how cells work together to keep us alive. You’ll look at the differences between bacteria, viruses, and human cells and how scientists use these differences to make new medicines. You’ll also get hands-on experience using key lab techniques and safely working with cells
Further Chemistry for Pharmaceutical and Biological Sciences Core30 credits+
Organic chemistry is all about carbon-based molecules, such as their structure, reactivity, and how they’re prepared. In this module, you’ll build on what you’ve learned in earlier chemistry courses, exploring how organic chemistry is used to design and create pharmaceutical products. You’ll also get hands-on experience in the lab, making, isolating, and testing simple organic compounds.
Further Molecular and Cellular Biology Core30 credits+
Interested in how our bodies stay balanced and how science helps develop medicines? This module covers important ideas in molecular and cellular biology, focusing on how the body maintains balance (homeostasis) and how molecular biology tools are used to create research tools and medicines. You’ll also strengthen your critical thinking skills, learning how to evaluate scientific information and make evidence-based conclusions.
Infection and Immunity Core30 credits+
How do infections spread and how does your body fight them? In this module, you’ll learn how infectious diseases are transmitted and explore the biological and biochemical processes behind the body’s defence against infections. You’ll also gain practical skills in identifying microorganisms and testing their resistance to antibiotics, using both traditional and advanced microbiological methods.
Cell Signaling and Metabolic Regulation Core30 credits+
This module will explore key chemical signalling pathways in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, with a focus on how these pathways connect to metabolism and energy use in biological systems. Ever wondered how cells communicate and how energy flows through living systems? You’ll also get hands-on experience in the lab, expanding your skills in molecular and cellular biology techniques. You’ll even work with mammalian cells, testing how they respond to different physical and chemical stimuli.

You’ll carry out original research in a field of your choice, selected from topics provided by the academic staff in the pharmaceutical sciences team. You’ll be mentored by experts who will guide you through relevant techniques and demonstrate how their research contributes to the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and other industries. Along the way, you’ll keep accurate records, including lab books, COSHH forms, and risk assessments, while communicating your findings in professional formats. Ready to conduct your own scientific research and contribute to advancing knowledge?
Contemporary Drug Design Core30 credits+
Curious about how drugs are designed using cutting-edge technology? This module focuses on modern drug design methods, including the use of advanced computational tools. You’ll learn through problem-based learning how to investigate the structure and properties of ‘drug-like’ molecules, predicting their binding and energy levels. These insights will connect to chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, and reactivity, helping you understand how drugs interact with biological targets identified through bioinformatics. You’ll also explore the latest techniques in hit identification, triage, and prioritisation in the drug design process.
Biochemical Aspects of Disease Core30 credits+
