TV Drama Core30 credits+
Want to act in TV or film? Curious about how it all works behind the scenes? Work with real scripts and film in a multi-camera studio. Boost your acting skills by learning how to prepare for scenes, take direction, and even direct yourself! This module will help you build your confidence in front of the camera and better understand how TV scenes are filmed and how actors and crews work together. This will be rounded up by giving a short presentation about your experience and role in the performance.
Creative Storytelling Core30 credits+
Do you love films and want to write your own? You'll learn what makes a great story and how to write short film scripts to connect with audiences. You’ll explore basics like character, dialogue, plot, and genre. This helps you understand how to turn your ideas into scripts that come alive on screen. You’ll also dive into big film ideas: Is film meant to show real life or offer escape? What makes a star more than just an actor? How do visuals like lighting and costume help tell the story? Mixing theory with practice, you’ll watch, think, write, and create. This allows you to gain skills in both screenwriting and film analysis.
Screen Acting 1 Core30 credits+
Discover what it takes to be a screen actor. Develop your acting skills by working on camera and try our different acting techniques used by professionals. Explore how your voice and body help bring your character to life and see how famous acting methods are used in film and TV today. As a result, you'll create a short performance and summarise what you've learned in a short talk.
Filmmaking Craft Skills Core30 credits+
Dive into the world of single camera video production and sound recording. Explore the essential skills and techniques used by filmmakers and sound designers to craft compelling short videos. You’ll learn how to shoot, plan, and produce your own short video project. You’ll work as a team to create a Production File that shows your full process, this includes everything from research and scripting to call sheets, compliance, and final edits. At the same time, you’ll explore the art and technique of sound.
TV Drama 2 Core30 credits+
How does drama work on Live TV? Why is it so important? Get hands-on experience working in a TV studio and out on location and learn key ways to capture great performances for TV. Discover how acting and production choices affect what viewers see, whether in the studio or outside.
Filmmaking Craft Skills 2 Core30 credits+
Form a production company and take your project through every stage, from developing and scripting to performing, shooting, and editing. Develop skills in directing, producing, camera work, lighting, sound, editing, and managing the production process. Working in teams, you’ll tackle industry challenges like directing actors and meeting deadlines with creativity and professionalism.
You’ll also explore crowdfunding and digital marketing to help your film reach an audience.
Screen Acting 2 Core30 credits+
Want to build skills for working in film and TV that help you stand out? Develop a toolkit that helps you become a confident screen artist and develop your understanding of the impact of practitioner-inspired methods specific to work that takes place within TV and film environments.
Genre Filmmaking Core30 credits+
Dive into a range of dramatic genres like thrillers, comedies, horror, and romance. Uncover how each genre influences story structure and audience expectations across both traditional media and immersive platforms. Working collaboratively, you’ll create projects that balance classic genre conventions with fresh, creative twists. By analysing both classic and modern examples, you’ll sharpen your skills in genre storytelling and experiment with new ways to engage audiences.
Showcase Core30 credits+
Get the opportunity to interact with industry specialists. Produce a showreel featuring your best acting clips, perfect for impressing casting directors or potential employers after graduating. You'll also get the opportunity to write about your acting journey over the last three years. What skills have you gained? How have you grown and developed?
Creative Enterprise Core30 credits+
Want to turn your creativity into a career? This module helps you explore how the creative world works and what your place in it could be. You’ll learn from real-life creatives, work on a small live project, and build practical skills for jobs in areas like design, media, music, art, and fashion. You’ll also create a digital portfolio or an online CV to show off your best work and start building your personal brand.
Film for Social Change Core30 credits+
This module will give you a rare opportunity to collaborate with Northumbria Police and produce an awareness and training film that addresses crime. Learn how to act in front of the camera and explore business on screen, hitting a mark, audition techniques and reactions to camera. Analyse scenes from screen performances and explore the creation of meaning in performance. Evaluate how performance and participatory filmmaking can aid social change!
Multiplatform Core30 credits+
Curious about acting in VR, doing voiceovers, or presenting on TV? As a screen actor, you’ll explore lots of styles, from motion capture and podcasting to animation voice work. Get involved in hands-on workshops, where you’ll learn real skills, build confidence, and create clips for your showreel. You’ll get to act in virtual worlds, voice cartoon characters, move like a video game hero, and tell stories using only your voice.
Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

You'll be assessed in a variety of different forms, with learning outputs mirroring industry outputs in terms of showreels, audition and on-set standards and etiquette, video essays, and adverts, as well as developing essay writing, research, and presentation skills.
