Student stories
Jessica Jones
"I currently work for one of the world's most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies as an Environmental Scientist within the Contaminated Land and Hydrogeology team. I joined as a graduate on the graduate development programme. My degree at the University of Worcester made all this possible, I developed report writing skills and the ability to analyse data that are paramount to my day to day job and it gave me a broad understanding of the environmental sector."
Saffron Ferreira
Using the skills she’s learned at university, including the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) software, Saffron will be playing a key role in developing the region’s transport network for the future.
"On my placement, I got involved in a variety of things, like cycling in Birmingham to assess the roads, which was absolutely terrifying,” she recalls. “I’ve only ever cycled in parks and safe places, and I was being confronted by buses and all sorts. But it showed me the issues within the transport network that we’re trying to fix so that was really important.”
Emily Bratt
"I applied to do BSc Geography at Worcester because it was clear to me that it was a student-focused course. With their ‘open door’ policy and being assigned a Personal Academic Tutor, they are extremely invested in their students, wanting them to achieve the best grade possible through incredible amounts of support, The course also allows all Geography students to get hands-on with the kit meaning it’s not just for show, you really get to use it!"
Elizabeth Bisp
"Geography at Worcester has all of the benefits of a smaller course. During my time at Worcester, I have taken part in several field trips and fieldwork. It would be easier for lecturers just to lecture, however by taking us out to the field both through fieldwork in nearby areas, such as Worcester City Centre, the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire as well as residential field trips, including the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands, and even France, it has enhanced my learning and overall experience. Having spoken to friends who have studied geography at different universities, I have realised what a unique experience this was and how much I have benefitted from them."
Ragnar Mularczyk
I am one of three sabbatical officers, elected by the students, for the benefit of students. My time studying BSc Geography at Worcester University provided me with the confidence I needed to put myself forward as an electoral candidate for the position I am now in. It is the transferable skills that I have enhanced through my time at university that have assisted me most in my current job. I would recommend the course to any prospective students!

It also addresses the theory of flow measurement and water quality monitoring in streams and rivers, including the use of the university’s river monitoring stations and hydrometric network design."
"title": "Development and Change in the Global South",
"id": "95bb3c71",
"value": "This module introduces you to the various debates concerning development in what has been termed ‘the global south’. It discusses past and present theories of development and examines the impacts of different development practise with particular reference to culture, gender relations, livelihoods in rural and urban contexts, natural resource management, and sustainable development. You will develop a geographical understanding of the inter-relationships between various development issues, and the role of different stakeholders in the development process. Underpinning the module is a critical examination of post-development and decolonial discourses, and how the positioning of development and its challenges continue to be shaped and constructed by the global north."
"title": "Climate Crisis",
"id": "684effbe",
"value": "This module introduces you to the scientific and human dimensions of the climate crisis. Drawing on a wide range of recently published research, it explores the following questions: What is the current scientific consensus on climate change? How and why is the climate changing? What is being done and what more can be done to stop climate change or reduce its effects? How influential are scientists, the media, and politicians in shaping public understanding and acceptance of climate change science, impacts and responses? What are the barriers and challenges to an integrated response at local, national, and international scales? Combining theoretical and practical components, the module encompasses a range of individual and group-based activities employing varied teaching techniques and digital multi-media."
"title": "Rural-Urban Geographies",
"id": "f4b224be",
"value": "This module develops your knowledge of two core components of human geography: rural and urban. It explores different geographical approaches to studying change within rural and urban places. Importantly, it explores the relationships between them, where people in the country and the city alike face challenges and changes from the interaction of global and local processes and policies. Examples are drawn mainly from within Britain, but case studies from Europe and the Global North are also drawn upon to cover the latest thinking about planetary rural-urban geographies. For the rural content, geographical ideas are explored through key topics including agriculture and the food chain, counterurbanisation and the ‘rural idyll’. In terms of cities, the module shows that they are ever-changing. This means that managing and developing cities in sustainable ways presents many pressing contemporary global challenges for humankind."

"title": "Advanced Residential Fieldwork",
"id": "d2f8e162",
"value": "Core contemporary geographical issues and concepts are explored in the context of a European fieldwork destination. Here, physical and human geographical processes will play out in markedly different ways from that of the UK where you will have previously undertaken fieldwork. Throughout, the emphasis is on the development of advanced fieldwork skills and the critical transformation and application of geographical knowledge gained in the classroom to different spatial contexts and environments. Within the module, you will opt for a particular focus to your fieldwork, selecting from the specific activities and sessions on offer during the field course."
"title": "Professional Development and Careers for Geographers",
"id": "9dd9f623",
"value": "Geography is a rich and diverse discipline and geography graduates are very employable, with the skills, knowledge, and understanding gained during their degree held in high regard by employers. This module provides you with the opportunity to reflect on your own training as geographers and learn to transfer and apply your geographical and personal skills within a professional context. You will undertake either a short 40-hour work placement (arranged by yourself before the start of the module) or 40 hours of ‘learning from work’ via an approved professional project placement. Consideration will also be given to the ways in which transferable geographical skills and training might be applied to career development planning through reflection on your e-portfolio maintained throughout your course and its utilisation as the basis for a mock-job interview. The taught element of this module will be delivered by a series of seminars and tutorial sessions."
"title": "River Conservation & Management",
"id": "2b852f2a",
"value": "River systems are one of the most degraded and altered parts of the landscape. This module highlights the extent to which rivers have been physically altered by river regulation, dam building, and river engineering, and evaluates modern approaches to river management that attempt to rectify the problems caused by the former alteration of rivers. The module explores environmentally sensitive management practices that promote river conservation including water resource management, river restoration and rehabilitation, and environmental flow setting. You will have the opportunity to develop fieldwork skills assessing the physical habitat quality of local streams."
"title": "Engineering Geomorphology",
"id": "649e4087",
"value": "This module focuses upon how a thorough understanding of geomorphological processes and landforms can be used to provide practical support and guidance for environmental and engineering decision making. Emphasis is placed upon the evaluation of near surface ground conditions and the reasons why the failure to understand and recognise the impact of former climatic conditions upon the engineering properties of superficial deposits has resulted in slope instability and the costly failure of engineering projects. You will be introduced to surface and shallow sub-surface site investigation techniques and the analysis and characterisation of engineering soils."
"title": "Earth Observation & Environmental Change",
"id": "4d365e31",
"value": "Over the last few decades many changes have taken place at the surface of our planet, for example the reduction of tropical rainforest and expansion of urban environments. Earth Observation (EO) is one of the most important tools for geographers to monitor, mitigate and manage such changes. It can be used on a wide range of scales, with high resolution images collected from drones being used to map the local effects of earthquakes, while coarse resolution data from satellites enables assessment of desertification on a global scale. This module provides a theoretical basis on EO techniques and their integration with Geographical Information Systems (GIS). However, emphasis lies on technical training, using specialist software, and project work involving application of the learnt techniques to topical geographical and environmental change issues."
"title": "Glaciers and Glaciation",
"id": "9db5a1fb",
"value": "Dramatic fluctuations in glaciers and ice sheets during the Quaternary period have had significant impacts on landscapes and sea levels. This module explores both the causes and impacts of these changes, with an emphasis on changes in NW Europe from the ‘Last Glacial Maximum’ onwards. You will apply this knowledge and understanding to a selected study area and produce an online guided virtual field trip."
"title": "Sustainable Development in Sub-Saharan Africa",
"id": "5a10d5d2",
"value": "Many of the development challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa are inextricably linked to peoples’ interaction with, and management of, the natural environment. Most development practitioners and academics would argue that balancing development needs with environmental sustainability is critical for poverty reduction and the development of sustainable livelihood systems. Indeed, balancing environmental sustainability with the development needs of the poor was designated in 2000 as one of the Millennium Development Goals, and more recently in 2015 the Sustainable Development Goals have sought greater cross-sectoral integration of these mutually beneficial outcomes. Through a mix of interactive lectures, guest lectures from practitioners, group work and virtual fieldwork, you will explore the nature and practical challenges of facilitating sustainable development that produces win-win outcomes for people and the environment in sub-Saharan Africa."
"title": "Planning Space. Making Place",
"id": "d01285f6",
"value": "The operation of the formalised spatial planning system in Britain has had a considerable impact on the processes of place development and change for many decades. Significantly, planners negotiate many key tensions and conflicts within the development process as they seek to balance the competing economic, social, and environmental demands of multiple stakeholders. This module provides an understanding of the operation of the spatial planning process and the key issues, tensions, and challenges that exist in securing sustainable development and in creating places that are healthy, vibrant, and inclusive for all."
"title": "Our Fragile Planet: Biogeography",
"id": "a3197349",
"value": "Biogeography is the study of the geographic distribution of plants, animals, and other organisms. This module provides the opportunity for you to further explore topics examined elsewhere in the course with a focus on the key themes and debates within the field of biogeography. Through a mixture of interactive lectures, guest lectures from professionals in the field, and local non-residential fieldwork, the module will equip you with an understanding of core ecological concepts and provide a platform for exploring issues affecting the natural world and conservation practice. Innovative assessments aim to reinforce learning and develop digital capabilities."
"title": "Countryside Conservation and Agricultural Change",
"id": "45097570",
"value": "This module examines current efforts to conserve the UK countryside. It starts by highlighting that conservation is a selective process based on our cultural valuation of what is worth protecting. Once established, the module focuses upon the measures that have been put in place to protect and enhance the countryside. These compete with the tremendous changes that have occurred in agriculture over the last 100 years."
"id": "9cc42cb2",
"value": "The industrialisation of farming provides the main focus for discussion because it has destroyed much of what traditional systems previously created and what is most loved by the general public in terms of landscape and wildlife. Considerable effort is now going into putting back habitat biodiversity and landscape features, as evidenced by numerous policies designed to restore, recreate and rewild the countryside."
"id": "f91cfa62",
"value": "Different approaches are examined and evaluated, divided into statutory forms of protection (such as National Landscapes) and incentive-based measures that encourage land owners and occupiers to conserve (agri-environmental schemes). The module ponders on the key question of whether we can ever achieve both environmental sustainability and food security from our future countryside."
"title": "Tourism Geographies: Culture, Economy, and Power",
"id": "c028355f",
"value": "This module uses multiple geographical perspectives to examine the power relations, cultural values, economic networks, and individual experiences that shape tourism destinations across space and time. Using national and international case studies, it introduces you to contemporary approaches, frameworks, and concepts for critically understanding the cultural and environmental implications behind touristification processes, the politics underpinning environmental degradation and cultural erosion of tourism destinations, the complex relationship between globalisation and tourism, and the evolution of destinations towards sustainable scenarios. The module critically considers whose culture and heritage is being represented in these contexts, who benefits from tourism and who bears with its impacts, and the influence of multiple actors, institutions, and history in the shaping of sustainable tourism destinations."
