Durham Education 2027
The University is committed to continuous improvement and has completed a review to enhance our courses. The resulting changes to this course advertised for 2027 entry are presented on this webpage.
These enhancements were developed in consultation with students and in response to student feedback. They do not affect degree subjects, academic standards or the broad concepts that will be taught, but relate to how courses are organised. In some cases, this means that the balance of compulsory and optional modules has changed.
Potential applicants were previously advised through a statement on this webpage that course details were under review and that any updates would be communicated transparently by the end of summer 2026. The information now presented reflects those updates, ensuring applicants know what to expect from their chosen degree.

Your learning will be informed by ongoing research by experts working at the forefront of finance. Compulsory modules form the foundation of the programme, while optional modules can be tailored to suit your interests. These interests can be further developed through the researching and writing of the dissertation.
In your first year, you will learn the core principles of finance, build essential quantitative skills, and gain a solid understanding of economic and accounting concepts that enable you to analyse firm performance and evaluate key business decisions. You will also explore key ethical aspects of financial institutions and financial decision-making.
In your second year, you will build on your skills in quantitative and economic analysis, learn more about corporate finance, and discover how financial institutions and markets operate, and how securities are priced. You will also be able to choose optional modules to explore particular topics you are interested in.
In your third year you engage in a business placement. More information on the placement year can be found in the Careers, Employability and Enterprise Hub.
In your final year, you will only study one compulsory module and will otherwise have the flexibility to select optional modules that match your interests and career goals. Learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, and workshops. While lectures explore the key narratives of topics, seminars and workshops take a smaller group format, providing the physical and mental space to engage in debate and discussion as a follow-up to the lectures, and to get hands-on experience with key financial databases such as S&P Capital IQ, WRDS, CSMAR and Bloomberg and relevant software.
You will learn individually and collaboratively, engaging with peers, academics and practitioners through seminars, workshops, lectures, and extracurricular guest lectures and practical skills workshops.
You will engage with a range of independent learning activities, including preparing for seminars and workshops, reading and critically evaluating academic literature, analysing case studies, undertaking research projects, and completing assessments. Independent study may also involve reviewing industry reports, analysing organizational data, engaging with current finance debates, and exploring real-world business challenges.
Self-directed learning will help you develop your life-long learning and critical thinking skills. As you move from the first to final year, you’ll find a greater emphasis on self-directed learning and independent research as you begin to prepare for professional or postgraduate life.
The programme culminates in a dissertation, allowing you to apply your learning throughout the programme to the exploration of a topic which aligns with your academic and professional interests. The dissertation will allow you to demonstrate your ability to engage in sustained self-directed learning, supported by the advice of your dissertation supervisor.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to engage in extracurricular activities, such as careers workshops, guest speaker events, and financial skills workshops.
With the optional Certificate in Engagement with Practice in Finance (CEPF), the programme offers you a structured, non-credit-bearing recognition of sustained practice engagement. Students curate their participation across approved activities (e.g. masterclasses, bootcamps, Bloomberg certifications, industry events) and complete a short reflective portfolio for certification purposes.
In future years, qualifying activities may include:
Employer and practitioner masterclasses (on areas such as banking, markets, regulation, fintech), alumni talks and policy briefings.
Trading-lab workshops and data/analytics sessions (e.g. Bloomberg, Python-based workflows).
Short skills bootcamps (e.g. programming for finance, time-series/econometrics, SQL/data management) and careers workshops.
Bloomberg certifications (e.g. BMC; ESG) and other approved micro-credentials.
Industry-linked projects/case activities where available.
Successful completion results in a certificate of recognition, formally included on the academic transcript.Read more
Assessment
Modules are assessed via a combination of examinations, written assignments and reports, projects, and group work.
The dissertation allows you to showcase your ability to apply your learning in a sustained piece of independent research and to write a coherent, thorough research report, which clearly sets out a research question and its practical relevance, discusses the prior literature and relevant research methodologies, and explains and interprets the findings of the research project.
The different forms of assessment are designed to help you to develop and demonstrate a broad range of academic, professional, and employability skills. Together, they aim to support the development of your subject knowledge, analytical and technical expertise, communication skills, professional judgement, and independent learning, to prepare you for careers across the financial sector or for advanced study.

Durham University considers a wide variety of qualifications for admission. If you are unsure about any of the information below, please get in touch with us directly at North.America@durham.ac.uk - we're happy to help.
For 2025 entry, Durham has updated entry requirements for students attending a high school in the United States that does not offer an AP curriculum. For students attending a school that does not offer AP curriculum, we will consider honours courses or equivalent in place of APs. For students attending a school that has an AP curriculum, you will be expected to submit AP exams for admission.
Different degree programmes at Durham will require different exam scores.
Check what the A-Level entry requirements are for your degree programme of choice. You can find this on the course page using our course database.
Use the table below to see what the A-Level entry requirements are equivalent to for US applicants.
For students attending a school with AP curriculum
If your school offers AP curriculum, you will need to submit a minimum of two AP exam scores in order to meet the academic entry requirements for your degree programme of choice. Please note that you must sit and submit the examinations, we will not accept the course grade. If there is a specific subject required for admission, you must evidence this with an AP exam. For some programmes, one AP may be sufficient alongside two additional qualifications listed below.

For students attending a school that does not offer AP curriculum
If your school does not offer AP courses, Durham will consider students who are completing the US High School Diploma with Honours courses. Please note that we will be using the information submitted by your school in the UCAS Reference to confirm that your school does not offer AP curriculum, and if your school does, you cannot be considered with Honours courses alone and will need to complete APs to be considered for admission.
If you are planning to apply via this pathway, you will need to ensure that you have achieved an overall GPA of 3.7, and you will need a minimum of 3 yearlong equivalent honours courses taken in grade 11 and grade 12 in order to be eligible for admission.
Please note: Some degree programmes have subject specific requirements. If you are applying to a programme with subject specific requirements and you are unsure if your honours course will meet the requirements, please contact us.

For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires GCSE Mathematics, SAT Reasoning Maths at 550+, ACT Maths at 21 or better, or a maths related AP course (e.g. Calculus AB or Statistics) with a score of 3 is mandatory.
For students applying with a High School Diploma and Honours courses where your school does not offer AP curriculum, you will need to have completed your school's equivalent of the above. If you are unsure if your curriculum meets the A Level requirements, please get in touch with us directly.
Important things to note regarding admission
You do not have to have completed all AP's at the time of applying. We understand that many students will take AP's in their Senior year and we can assess these when the results are released.
We do not accept the AP Capstone (comprising of AP Research and AP Seminar) in order to fulfil the conditions of an offer to study at Durham.
Students using an Associate’s Degree or similar to apply still need to meet all A Level subject requirements where applicable. If you are unsure if your qualification will meet these requirements, please get in touch with us.
If you are planning to use one year-long equivalent Dual Enrolment or College course, you need to have studied that subject for the equivalent of one full time year, e.g., across two semesters or three trimesters. For example, Psychology 101 and Psychology 102.
We also accept SAT Subject Tests. If you have SAT Subject Test scores, please get in touch to see if this can reduce the number of other standardised tests required.
