Companies, cities, and states are seeking to integrate economic growth with environmental improvement—get ahead of the curve by combining environmental science and business in a single degree.
Environmental management is often as much about managing people as it is about managing nature. This degree offers a powerful combination of the conceptual, analytical, and technical skills of environmental science with strategic insights from business management to position you as a leader who can work with data and across any number of the rapidly growing list of institutions, companies, and organisations that recognise environmental sustainability is the most secure path to success. You will graduate with the unusual capacity to watch data travel from the field, to the lab, and to the economic calculations of private and public organisations seeking to navigate everything from business economics and strategic analysis to managing invasive species and the environmental extremes that threaten resource security.
Be Part of the Data-Driven Business Revolution
Our BSc Environmental Science with Business Management rivals interdisciplinary programmes worldwide through its training across the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences, and the School of Business Management. At this intersection, you'll start your degree by seeing how ecological, physical, and economic concerns are consolidated in particular places, such as on the fieldtrip you'll take to study sustainability transitions in Malta in your first semester.
You'll progress through your degree gaining transferable skills in data collection, quantitative and geospatial analysis, and laboratory techniques for three-quarters of your programme, with one-quarter dedicated to gaining insights into management and economics, human resources, communications, and the strategies needed to understand businesses as a whole across financial, labour, and environmental risks. You will have the opportunity to undertake a work placement in a role that complements your studies. The independent research you undertake for your final year dissertation will be supported by an academic who will encourage you to choose a project that showcases the skills you've developed across all aspects of your degree programme, from research design through to the creative solutions needed to think in new ways about pressing environmental challenges.
Through your examination of environmental pollution, climate change, extreme event modelling, conservation, or Nature-Based solutions, you'll position yourself uniquely for a career where the lab and field meet the business end of sustainability. The practical, people-oriented skills that run through the programme will provide you with that rare ability to meaningfully collaborate and engage with those affected by environmental decisions in the private sector, in government agencies, or in the many third-sector organisations dedicated to pursuing community driven environmental solutions within the UK and abroad.
Professional recognition
This programme is accredited by the Community for Environmental Disciplines in Higher Education (part of the Institution of Environmental Sciences), and the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP).
You can complete your Environmental Science with Business Management degree in three or four years.
