About this course
The world is changing, and so are the ways in which businesses operate. Organisations need people who can think on their feet, adapt to new scenarios and rise to any challenge. On this business degree, you’ll get ready to face the unprecedented and prepare for jobs which don’t even exist yet.
From small-scale start-ups to global corporations, and from commercial enterprises to charities and community organisations, success in business isn’t always measured by money. Business professionals might be tasked with diversifying customers, finding ways to coexist with competition, reaching more people, delivering services more effectively, or anything else which works towards an organisation’s primary objectives — whether they’re financial, social or otherwise.
Our BA Business course is designed to cover every avenue. By taking a holistic approach, you’ll lay the foundations for a career in any sector you choose — because when it comes to business, there are no limitations.
Our students get great jobs

Build your own business

As a BA Business student, you’ll focus on applying your learning to the real world. You’ll delve into the history of business, and use this knowledge to analyse and predict current and future trends. You’ll learn business theories, and be able to identify circumstances where they’re relevant and adapt to situations which defy them. And you’ll develop technical skills and get familiar with contemporary tools to implement what you learn in real-life settings, like using AI and finding solutions to digital challenges.
Most importantly, you’ll get invaluable experience of business in action. In addition to live briefs for real clients being built into your modules, you can opt to do a year-long paid placement or a half-year internship, and take advantage of NBS’s many networking events. The choice is yours, but it’s this CV-boosting and confidence-building experience that will set you apart after university.
Studying this business degree, you’ll:
Develop a strategic mindset and fundamental understanding of business before shaping your degree around your aspirations and interests, with a broad range of modules and alternative study paths to choose from in Year Two and beyond.
Get real work-like experience woven into your course, with live briefs, short-term placement and internship opportunities, and the popular option to spend a placement year in paid, full-time employment whilst being supported by us.
Attend talks from guest speakers including alumni and industry experts, who share insights, advice and perspectives from different roles and fields.
Consider key principles like sustainability and make decisions which align with your values throughout the course, to help you futureproof today’s businesses and make sure you’re ready for whatever lies ahead.
Have the chance to work or study abroad in Year Two or Year Three (four-year ‘Sandwich’ option), building an international network of industry contacts. · Be able to access specialist guidance and advice on building your own business with NTU Enterprise — previous students have even spent their placement year doing this.
Study business in a globally recognised business school
You’ll study this course at Nottingham Business School – part of the 1% of business schools worldwide to hold the Triple Crown of accreditation from EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. For you, this means high-quality teaching, relevant course content and a degree that employers recognise and respect.

That approach shapes how business is taught here, helping you develop the skills and judgement you’ll need to make confident, responsible decisions as you start your career.
Module information
A standard full-time BA (Hons) course is made up of 120 credits studied each year. Some courses may vary, however, and you can find information on the total number of credits achieved per module below.
Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll be studying throughout the
Year OneYear TwoOptional Placement YearFinal Year
ModulesExpand all +
Personal and Academic Development
From your first days at university, to the end of year one, you'll build the foundations a business career needs: data literacy, professional digital skills, and a clear picture of your own strengths. You'll explore Nottingham's real business landscape, understand what employers look for, and put together a development plan that maps your ambitions to the career you want.
20 credits
Foundations of Managing and Organising
Why do some organisations thrive and others stall? You’ll find out how people are managed and motivated, how teams work in person and remotely, and how leadership shapes the culture. You'll get a sharper eye for why organisations are structured the way they are. And you'll put the theory to work through workplace simulation activities, practising the skills before you need them for real.
Economics and Data Analysis for Managers
Businesses run on decisions, and the best decisions are built on evidence. This module works through the methods professional economists and data analysts actually use. You will apply concepts to real management problems: examine trade-offs, allocate resources and draw conclusions from data. Hands-on practice is built in throughout, so you leave with skills you can use.
Principles of Marketing
You'll build your marketing knowledge around a real brief: developing a new product idea for an actual business. As you work through the process, you'll cover the core concepts from customer segmentation and the marketing mix to new product development. By the end, you'll know how to identify what customers want, build a case for delivering it, and present a marketing plan with both a UK and international dimension.
Accounting and Finance for Managers
Behind every business decision sits a set of numbers, and you'll learn to read them properly. You'll examine how businesses are financed and the limits that financing creates, how accounting profit is calculated, and how to identify the cash flows and break-even points relevant to a project decision. You'll build skills in budgeting, cash and working capital management, and financial statement construction, along with appraising long-term capital investments and valuing company shares.
Essentials of Business Development
Organisations of every kind face the same fundamental pressure: how to grow and stay resilient when the world keeps shifting. You'll examine how different types of organisation make decisions, develop operations, and respond to external threats and opportunities. Entrepreneurial thinking runs through the module, alongside the practical skills needed to spot a problem and design a solution.
First half of Year Two – Core modulesExpand all +
Managing and Organising for Human Resources
Drawing on work psychology, organisational sociology and human resource management, you'll examine how work is managed today and why that context keeps shifting. You'll build a critical perspective that considers both those managing and those being managed, testing classic studies in HR against the realities of the contemporary international workplace. Because these issues touch every sector, they're relevant well beyond HR careers.
Artificial Intelligence and Digital Entrepreneurship
Digital entrepreneurship is transforming how organisations identify opportunities and launch ventures in the age of artificial intelligence. You will analyse market trends, evaluate digital platforms, and develop business concepts enabled and enhanced by the latest digital tools and technologies. By the end, you’ll be ready to drive innovation and digital strategy across business and management roles.
Sustainable Leadership in Practice (Business)
Sustainable leadership is critical in tackling climate change, enabling leaders to create resilient, ethical systems that balance environmental, social and economic priorities. In this module, you will analyse case studies using tools like the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Sustainability Competency Matrix. You will graduate with the leadership mindset and practical skills to influence positive change.
Second half of Year Two – Optional unique opportunitiesExpand all +
Study Abroad
Experience life in another country by studying at one of our partner universities. Choose from a host of countries in Europe or go further afield and study in the USA, South America, Australasia and South East Asia. This is a great opportunity to develop your independence and explore another culture.
60 credits
Enterprise Project
Turn your business idea into something real. Based in the award-winning Dryden Enterprise Centre, you’ll develop a new venture or grow an existing one with support from academic and business mentors. You’ll explore your market, define your audience, shape a practical marketing and growth plan, consider finances and sustainability, and learn how to pitch your idea with confidence inside a real start-up environment.
Internship
Get a taste of the working world and gain some essential industry insight with a 12-15 week work placement. The experience will allow you to put your learning in to practice, with the experience gained improving your future career prospects, and sharpening your interpersonal and professional skills.
Or continue with taught modules. Core modules:Expand all +
Applied Professional Development
This unique module supports you to refine the attributes and behaviours that will make you stand out in the workplace. Later, you'll engage in a period of work or work-like experience, developing a range of practical skills and the mindset to navigate your future with confidence. You'll also complete a mock video job interview which will hone your ability to respond with strong, well-thought-through answers under time pressure, and help you to clinch your dream work placement or future graduate role.

This module explores the role of marketing management and its interaction with other business functions. Management Accounting for Decision Making
The right decision often comes down to reading the numbers correctly. You'll examine the management accounting techniques used in business decision making, and explore how accounting and finance information needs to evolve as markets get more competitive. You'll weigh up the value and limits of accounting information for planning, control and decision making, and pick up the problem-solving techniques teams use within an accounting and finance framework.
Exploring Strategy and Innovation
Competitive advantage doesn't happen by accident. You'll examine how organisations build it through strategic management, innovation and business development, in a global context, and be introduced to key concepts in strategy, organisational change and development from different cultural contexts. From there, you'll dig into innovation itself, what it actually is and the processes involved in bringing it about.
Managing the Global Supply Chain
Focusing on operations and marketing, this module your practical understanding of the structure and organisation of supply chains, including sustainability and ethical issues. The areas you will cover include operations, logistics and procurement, and the importance of the flow of goods and information in providing value through global delivery systems.
In your third year, you can choose to spend a year in industry, study at one of our international partner institutions, or continue straight through to your final year.
A placement year is a chance to test what you've learned in a real working environment and build your CV before you graduate. Our recent Business students have secured placements with companies including PWC, Unilever, NBC Universal and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Studying abroad is a different kind of experience, but equally valuable. Time at an international partner institution builds the adaptability, independence and cross-cultural awareness that stand out on a graduate application.
Whatever path you choose, our Employability team is here to help you prepare, whether that's finding placements, exploring self-employment, volunteering or getting advice on further study. As an NTU graduate, you'll also retain access to their services for three years after you finish.
Continue with taught modules
If you choose not to take a placement year or study abroad, you’ll continue directly into your final year. Please see the ‘Final Year’ tab for your list of modules.
Core modulesExpand all +
Developing Professional Impact
This module provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the skills and behaviours you've developed throughout your degree and put them to the test in a "live" consultancy project set by a real organisation. Working in a team with other students you'll address the brief and present your findings and recommendations to the client and your tutors. Later in the module you'll explore subject specific competences for career readiness and debate important themes on the agenda of all businesses such as diversity and inclusiveness, ethics and sustainability. By the end of the module, you'll have a sharper understanding of the impact you want to make to business and society and the confidence to take your next steps forward with purpose.
Leveraging Information and Knowledge for Digital Transformation
In this module, you'll explore how organisations use data, information and knowledge to shape their strategy. You'll examine the role of technology in business decision-making, the importance of data literacy, and how organisations adapt to evolving challenges. Using real-world examples, you'll learn to distinguish between data, information, and knowledge, and understand their impact on shaping management practices and strategic opportunities. This module will equip you with the skills to navigate the complexities of digital transformation and make informed decisions in a data-driven environment.
Global Workforce Management
What works as good management in one country can fall flat in another. You'll unpack why, drawing on international perspectives to explore different management styles and philosophies. Your own experiences of national and organisational culture become part of the discussion, as you examine the problems that arise when organisations manage across diverse cultures and work through the solutions needed.
Strategic Marketing
You'll study the key concepts, frameworks and models behind strategic marketing, including the challenges of putting a strategy into action and keeping it on track. You'll explore how marketing managers respond to a complex, fast-changing global environment, and build the skills to run a full marketing audit, using its findings to shape marketing objectives and choose between strategic options.
Optional modules - choose one from:Expand all +
Applied Business Research Project
For this module you will undertake a purposeful, individual, in depth study of a relevant topic, developing your independent learning, critical thinking and knowledge of research techniques relevant to your subject area. The project will develop your ability to manage a major piece of work, for which you will be completely responsible, and will be completed over a period of several months. You will learn to utilise and improve your time management and communication skills, as well as test your initiative and resourcefulness.
To support your development during this module you will study essential skills such as critical thinking, conducting a literature review, understanding the appropriate research framework, practical research methods and skills, report and academic writing skills.
Sustainability Impact Project
This module is designed to give you a deeper understanding of sustainability issues affecting firms. It incorporates a live consultancy experience, where you are required to apply your knowledge to critically review aspects of enterprise practice and infrastructure and recommend ways to reduce carbon emissions. You will learn how to critically review sustainability issues presented by an enterprise and analyse evidence, arguments, concepts and data to formulate sustainability and carbon management recommendations for an enterprise.
Corporate Governance and Risk Management
During this module you will study current recommendations and developments in the field of corporate governance both in the UK and in a selection of overseas countries. The module aims to highlight the importance of control and risk management when implementing strong governance measures, and will evaluate the ethical and moral dilemmas faced by those entrusted with these responsibilities. You will also learn to determine and evaluate measures of fraud identification, prevention and investigation.
Managing Creativity, Design and Innovation
The development of successful products and services involves complex processes and is dependent on how well research, design and innovation activities are integrated with other functions in the organisation. This module will develop your understanding of the relationships between creativity, design and innovation and explore and debate a range of perspectives concerning their nature. It will develop your critical awareness of theories related to the origins and role of creativity at individual, team and organisational levels, and teach you to appreciate, understand and contemplate some of the issues facing organisations trying to harness the potential from their creative resources.
Global Supply Chain Strategy
A product's journey from raw material to customer touches marketing, design, distribution, logistics and project management. You'll learn to view supply chains strategically and globally, working through lean and agile approaches, forecasting and the bullwhip effect, and how design choices like postponement and mass customisation ripple through a chain. You'll also cover sustainability, CSR and environmental impact, and how to manage risk.
We regularly review our course content based on student and employer feedback to ensure they remain current and relevant. This may result in changes to module content or availability in future years. Optional modules will only run where there is sufficient demand. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis to protect the academic and student experience.

You’ll also have the chance to launch or develop your own business or enterprise project if you want to, guided by professionals who’ve done it themselves.
Making your own choices. As the course develops, so will your options. If you dream of studying abroad, take an extended stay with one of NBS’s global partners or even complete a placement overseas. Prefer to stay local? If the internship or enterprise project pathways don’t appeal, you can simply continue with your taught modules. It’s a versatile offer, built around your own preferences.
