About this course
Every organisation runs on people, and getting the people side right is what separates the ones that work from the ones that don't. On our Business Management and Human Resources degree, you'll discover how to bring business strategy and people together to help organisations succeed. You'll explore what makes a workplace successful: recruiting and developing talent, leadership, equality and diversity, reward, performance and organisational change. You'll learn from academics whose research influences organisations around the world, giving you an insight into the future of work and the challenges businesses face.
But it's not all about the classroom. You'll have opportunities to gain real-world experience through industry placements, internships, live consultancy projects, workplace simulations, study abroad and employer-led activities. This means you can put what you learn into practice while building the confidence, skills and experience employers look for.
The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Alongside your degree, you'll gain the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma, a professional qualification that gives you an edge over other graduates applying for the same HR and business roles. Whether you want to become a future business leader, HR professional, talent specialist or consultant, you'll graduate with the skills and experience to make a difference. Our recent graduates have gone on to work for organisations including Boots, IBM, Experian, DHL and the NHS.

We're 2nd in the UK for learning opportunities for Human Resource Management students (NSS 2026).
How does wellbeing drive performance and productivity — and why are we always redefining what it looks like? In a competitive job market, how do we find and retain the right people? Aside from trusting in their knowledge and skills, how can we ensure those people are truly engaged with (and inspired by) our biggest business goals?
An organisation can’t succeed without having robust strategies in place for its workforce — from how they’re recruited, to how they’re trained, to how they’re challenged, encouraged, and supported. There’s so much more to human resource management than making sure people come into work and do their bit; we’re here to show you the real world of business and HR, beyond the classroom. From internships, roleplaying and enterprise projects, to the offer of year-long industry placements and a chance to study abroad, it’s applied, it’s hands-on, and it’s exciting.
Highlights of this business management and HR degree include:
discovering the essentials of business management — from accounting and finance to budgeting and objective-setting — and exploring how HR helps to shape the strategies and goals of an organisation
critically analysing the hot topics in today’s workplace, and working with challenging briefs to argue your case in mock arbitration tribunals
understanding how AI, cutting-edge analytic tools and new tech are being used to assess data, spot trends, solve problems, and enable better practice in both business and human resource management
considering the rising prominence of the ‘employee voice’, and how it’s shaping employer-workforce relations around the world.
Study business in a globally recognised business school
You’ll study this course at Nottingham Business School – part of the 1% of business schools worldwide to hold the Triple Crown of accreditation from EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. For you, this means high-quality teaching, relevant course content and a degree that employers recognise and respect.
We’re also recognised by the United Nations as a PRME Champion, which means ethics, responsibility and sustainability are built into your learning from day one. That approach shapes how business is taught here, helping you develop the skills and judgement you’ll need to make confident, responsible decisions as you start your career.
Module information
A standard full-time BA (Hons) course is made up of 120 credits studied each year. Some courses may vary, however, and you can find information on the total number of credits achieved per module below.
Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll be studying throughout the
Year OneYear TwoOptional Placement YearFinal Year
ModulesExpand all +
Foundations of Managing and Organising
Why do some organisations thrive and others stall? You’ll find out how people are managed and motivated, how teams work in person and remotely, and how leadership shapes the culture. You'll get a sharper eye for why organisations are structured the way they are. And you'll put the theory to work through workplace simulation activities, practising the skills before you need them for real.
20 credits
Principles of Marketing
You'll build your marketing knowledge around a real brief: developing a new product idea for an actual business. As you work through the process, you'll cover the core concepts from customer segmentation and the marketing mix to new product development. By the end, you'll know how to identify what customers want, build a case for delivering it, and present a marketing plan with both a UK and international dimension.
Accounting and Finance for Managers
Behind every business decision sits a set of numbers, and you'll learn to read them properly. You'll examine how businesses are financed and the limits that financing creates, how accounting profit is calculated, and how to identify the cash flows and break-even points relevant to a project decision. You'll build skills in budgeting, cash and working capital management, and financial statement construction, along with appraising long-term capital investments and valuing company shares.
Essentials of Business Development
Organisations of every kind face the same fundamental pressure: how to grow and stay resilient when the world keeps shifting. You'll examine how different types of organisation make decisions, develop operations, and respond to external threats and opportunities. Entrepreneurial thinking runs through the module, alongside the practical skills needed to spot a problem and design a solution.
Economics and Data Analysis for Managers
Businesses run on decisions, and the best decisions are built on evidence. This module works through the methods professional economists and data analysts actually use. You will apply concepts to real management problems: examine trade-offs, allocate resources and draw conclusions from data. Hands-on practice is built in throughout, so you leave with skills you can use.
Personal and Academic Development
From your first days at university, to the end of year one, you'll build the foundations a business career needs: data literacy, professional digital skills, and a clear picture of your own strengths. You'll explore Nottingham's real business landscape, understand what employers look for, and put together a development plan that maps your ambitions to the career you want.
First half of Year Two – Core modulesExpand all +
Exploring Human Resource Management
You'll study the role HR plays in organisations, from the day-to-day HR function to the bigger picture of employer-employee relations. You'll get to grips with current research in the field, examining why trends like employee voice and engagement have taken hold and how HRM shapes them. With a particular focus on employee voice, you'll evaluate current and emerging practice in managing the employment relationship.
Human Resource Development
Human Resource Development blends theory with data. You'll explore the principles behind it and why a strategic approach matters in today's organisations, then use data analytics techniques to assess data and shape learning and training activities for individuals, teams and whole businesses. Team-working and communication run through it too: you'll learn to structure and present ideas clearly, in writing and out loud.
Evidence Based HR Data and Analytics
This module aims to develop your critical understanding and challenge accepted views of organisational issues affecting people in their everyday work. You will develop core research skills, learn to evaluate and present research evidence and arguments, and also develop a greater awareness of the limitations of theory.
Examples of the topics that are covered include power, surveillance and technology at work, service and leisure work, organisational misbehaviour, gender and sexuality in the workplace, and changing time and place of work.
Second half of Year Two – Optional unique opportunitiesExpand all +
Study Abroad
Experience life in another country by studying at one of our partner universities. Choose from a host of countries in Europe or go further afield and study in the USA, South America, Australasia and South East Asia. This is a great opportunity to develop your independence and explore another culture.
60 credits
Enterprise Project
Turn your business idea into something real. Based in the award-winning Dryden Enterprise Centre, you’ll develop a new venture or grow an existing one with support from academic and business mentors. You’ll explore your market, define your audience, shape a practical marketing and growth plan, consider finances and sustainability, and learn how to pitch your idea with confidence inside a real start-up environment.
Internship
Get a taste of the working world and gain some essential industry insight with a 12-15 week work placement. The experience will allow you to put your learning in to practice, with the experience gained improving your future career prospects, and sharpening your interpersonal and professional skills.
Or continue with taught modules. Core modules:Expand all +
Applied Professional Development
This unique module supports you to refine the attributes and behaviours that will make you stand out in the workplace. The module features a dynamic week-long conference, packed with inspirational guest speakers to get you thinking about the future of work and the part you want to play. Later, you'll engage in a period of work or work-like experience, developing a range of practical skills and the mindset to navigate your future with confidence. You'll also complete a mock video job interview which will hone your ability to respond with strong, well-thought-through answers under time pressure, and help you to clinch your dream work placement or future graduate role.
Marketing Management
This module explores the role of marketing management and its interaction with other business functions. You will study marketing management concepts that are used during the development of sound marketing strategies, and will develop effective group and personal skills that are valued highly by organisational employers. You will learn about the application of marketing tools to different contexts, as well as segmentation, targeting and positioning.
And choose one optional module from:Expand all +
Management Accounting for Decision Making
The right decision often comes down to reading the numbers correctly. You'll examine the management accounting techniques used in business decision making, and explore how accounting and finance information needs to evolve as markets get more competitive. You'll weigh up the value and limits of accounting information for planning, control and decision making, and pick up the problem-solving techniques teams use within an accounting and finance framework.
Artificial Intelligence and Digital Entrepreneurship
Digital entrepreneurship is transforming how organisations identify opportunities and launch ventures in the age of artificial intelligence. You will analyse market trends, evaluate digital platforms, and develop business concepts enabled and enhanced by the latest digital tools and technologies. By the end, you’ll be ready to drive innovation and digital strategy across business and management roles.
International Business in a Changing Global Landscape
This module gives an overview of how international business is conducted, focusing on what makes international business different from domestic business. You will study the major theories explaining international business transactions, the financial exchange systems and institutions that measure and facilitate international transactions, and the dynamic interface between countries and companies attempting to conduct foreign business activities. You will explore strategy, behaviour and the management of multinational corporations and the actions and policies of international regulatory bodies and agencies.
In your third year, you can choose to spend a year in industry, study at one of our international partner institutions, or continue straight through to your final year.
A placement year is a chance to test what you've learned in a real working environment and build your CV before you graduate. Our recent Business Management and Human Resources students have secured placements with companies including JCB, PCC Aerostructures, Freeths and AirBus.
Studying abroad is a different kind of experience, but equally valuable. Time at an international partner institution builds the adaptability, independence and cross-cultural awareness that stand out on a graduate application.
Whatever path you choose, our Employability team is here to help you prepare, whether that's finding placements, exploring self-employment, volunteering or getting advice on further study. As an NTU graduate, you'll also retain access to their services for three years after you finish.
Continue with taught modules
If you choose not to take a placement year or study abroad, you’ll continue directly into your final year. Please see the ‘Final Year’ tab for your list of modules.
Core modulesExpand all +
Contemporary Issues in People Management and Work
You'll build on what you already know about management and HR, but with a sharper, more critical edge. Contemporary management theory sits alongside historical context here: you'll trace the social, cultural and historical roots of management practice, and see how well-established HR concepts have developed over time into what we recognise today.
Strategic Human Resource Management
Build your critical understanding of HR strategy, from the theories and historical trends behind it to how HR actually operates in practice. Working across different organisational settings, you'll evaluate key HR activities and how they shape employment relationships and support organisational goals. And you’ll explore the skills HR managers need to manage human and knowledge capital.
Global Workforce Management
What works as good management in one country can fall flat in another. You'll unpack why, drawing on international perspectives to explore different management styles and philosophies. Your own experiences of national and organisational culture become part of the discussion, as you examine the problems that arise when organisations manage across diverse cultures and work through the solutions needed.
Developing Professional Impact
This module provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the skills and behaviours you've developed throughout your degree and put them to the test in a "live" consultancy project set by a real organisation. Working in a team with other students you'll address the brief and present your findings and recommendations to the client and your tutors. Later in the module you'll explore subject specific competences for career readiness and debate important themes on the agenda of all businesses such as diversity and inclusiveness, ethics and sustainability. By the end of the module, you'll have a sharper understanding of the impact you want to make to business and society and the confidence to take your next steps forward with purpose.
Optional modules - choose one from:Expand all +
Applied Business Research Project
For this module you will undertake a purposeful, individual, in depth study of a relevant topic, developing your independent learning, critical thinking and knowledge of research techniques relevant to your subject area. The project will develop your ability to manage a major piece of work, for which you will be completely responsible, and will be completed over a period of several months. You will learn to utilise and improve your time management and communication skills, as well as test your initiative and resourcefulness. To support your development during this module you will study essential skills such as critical thinking, conducting a literature review, understanding the appropriate research framework, practical research methods and skills, report and academic writing skills.
Sustainability Impact Project
This module is designed to give you a deeper understanding of sustainability issues affecting firms. It incorporates a live consultancy experience, where you are required to apply your knowledge to critically review aspects of enterprise practice and infrastructure and recommend ways to reduce carbon emissions. You will learn how to critically review sustainability issues presented by an enterprise and analyse evidence, arguments, concepts and data to formulate sustainability and carbon management recommendations for an enterprise.
Corporate Governance and Risk Management
During this module you will study current recommendations and developments in the field of corporate governance both in the UK and in a selection of overseas countries. The module aims to highlight the importance of control and risk management when implementing strong governance measures, and will evaluate the ethical and moral dilemmas faced by those entrusted with these responsibilities. You will also learn to determine and evaluate measures of fraud identification, prevention and investigation.
International Development Economics
During this module you will examine the common problems confronting the developing world and explore the suggested solutions. By examining examples and case studies from around the world you will cover vital subjects such as theories of economic growth, economic inequality, poverty and malnutrition, population growth, trade policy, and the markets for factors (land, labour, and credit) and output. There is no single cause for economic progress, so you will be guided to view economic development as an outcome of a combination of factors among them the improvement of physical and human capital, the reduction of inequality, and institutions that enable the background flow of information essential to market performance.
Leveraging Information and Knowledge for Digital Transformation
In this module, you'll explore how organisations use data, information and knowledge to shape their strategy. You'll examine the role of technology in business decision-making, the importance of data literacy, and how organisations adapt to evolving challenges. Using real-world examples, you'll learn to distinguish between data, information, and knowledge, and understand their impact on shaping management practices and strategic opportunities. This module will equip you with the skills to navigate the complexities of digital transformation and make informed decisions in a data-driven environment.
We regularly review our course content based on student and employer feedback to ensure they remain current and relevant. This may result in changes to module content or availability in future years. Optional modules will only run where there is sufficient demand. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis to protect the academic and student experience.

How you're taught
Our tutors come from fields as diverse as journalism, manufacturing, finance, IT, healthcare, hospitality, policy-making, and the non-profit sector. Through the lens of human resource management, consultancy, and research, they’ve worked as specialists in sustainability, social media, risk management, inclusion, and organisational analysis — locally, nationally, and internationally. They’re ready to share their knowledge and insights, alongside an exciting roll call of guest lecturers and returning NTU graduates. It’s no wonder we’re ‘Gold’-rated for teaching and learning.
On this business management and HR degree, you’ll learn through:
Networking — whether you’re hearing from guest lecturers, attending the prestigious ‘Future of Work’ event, or joining our delegation at the annual CIPD conference in Manchester, you’ll learn lots (and build meaningful connections) by meeting leaders in business. This is an HR course with a difference!
Getting hands-on. This course is about real-world practice, which means getting you on the frontline of business management and HR — whether that’s by arguing your case in mock tribunals or shadowing the HR operations here at NTU, observing training days, recruitment panels, and trade union negotiations.
Completing internships and placements. You’ll have the chance to take on a 16-18-week internship in Year Two, or a 48-week professional placement in Year Three of the sandwich pathway. Through these employer-facing experiences, some of our students have received job offers before they’ve even graduated!
Making your own choices. If you dream of studying abroad, you could attend one of our summer schools, or complete an extended stay with one of our global partners, anywhere from Sweden to South Korea. Looking to stay local? If the internship or Enterprise project pathways don’t appeal, you can continue with your taught modules. It’s a versatile offer, built around your own preferences.
How you're assessed
People learn in different ways, and we want each one of our students to have the best possible chance of success. Our diverse range of assessment methods includes mock employment tribunals, group presentations, real-world consultancy projects and business challenges, reflective learning, workshops and experiential learning, business reporting, and your ongoing personal development activities.
You’ll also complete on-campus, open-book exams, where you can count on the support and guidance of your tutors.
Contact hours
For each 20-credit module, you’ll spend about 200 hours learning overall. Around 40 of those hours will be taught in lectures or seminars. The rest of the time is for independent study, reading, research, or working on assignments.

It’s a city stuffed with history, culture, and well-kept secrets to discover at your leisure: enjoy lush green spaces, galleries, hidden cinemas and vintage shopping by day, and an acclaimed food, drink and social scene by night.
