About this course
As economists, we feel we’ve got an answer for everything — from the macroeconomics of inflation, interest rates and unemployment, to the microeconomics of how these things impact real people, households, and companies. Economics is built around time-tested theories and models, but also a lot of assumptions; we’re here to show you the strengths of those assumptions, their limits, and how economics oils every gear of the modern business machine.
On this course you’ll get a bigger business picture, plus the specialist economic skills to predict change, turn complex data into relatable stories, and inspire better decisions. Alongside a host of hands-on internship, placement, and consulting opportunities — all with real companies, both at home and abroad — you’ll come to appreciate how the different areas of a business can work together in harmony.
As a Business Management and Economics student you’ll have access to our unique Business Lab facility, including the industry-standard Bloomberg Terminals. With double-screen workstations, the room gives you a simulated experience of working in the fast-moving world of shares and trading. You can access sophisticated analysis tools and data on worldwide financial markets.
Learn to think like an economist, without being pigeonholed as one. Together, we’ll lay the foundations for a versatile, exciting future, giving you the tools and knowledge to navigate the whole business landscape — from economics, accounting and finance, to HR, marketing, and corporate strategy.
Flexible learning
Blend projects, internships and international study for a truly unique learning experience.

Study in the heart of Nottingham
One of the UK's top 10 student cities (QS Best Student Cities 2026).
When do governments intervene in failing markets? How do we explain fluctuations in exchange rates? What influence does economics have in encouraging us towards healthier life choices? And why does the global picture so often begin with the local one?
Economics answers a lot of questions — but not every question. It’s stronger when it’s combined with other business disciplines, and that’s the focus of this joint-honours course. We’ll get you thinking like an economist from day one, helping you to make sense of the world: by exploring traditional and contemporary economic models (including business, industrial, behavioural, heterodox, and nudge theories), you’ll learn how the different parts of an organisation interact, and why collaboration is more important than ever before.
Highlights of this business management and economics degree include:
exploring the economic drivers behind big-picture issues like growth, poverty, population increases, and trade policy — all backed by real-world case studies
getting to grips with the essentials of business management — from accounting and finance, to budgeting, HR, and strategy — while learning how to interpret and communicate complex data
learning about the everyday choices facing people, businesses and governments, the interconnectedness of economics at a different levels, and how microeconomics and macroeconomics constantly shape one another
tackling real-world business challenges — from debating the independence of the Bank of England, to helping local charities get noticed.
Study in a globally recognised business school
You’ll study this course at Nottingham Business School – part of the 1% of business schools worldwide to hold the Triple Crown of accreditation from EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. For you, this means high-quality teaching, relevant course content and a degree that employers recognise and respect.
We’re also recognised by the United Nations as a PRME Champion, which means ethics, responsibility and sustainability are built into your learning from day one. That approach shapes how business and economics is taught here, helping you develop the skills and judgement you’ll need to make confident, responsible decisions as you start your career.
Module information
A standard full-time BA (Hons) course is made up of 120 credits studied each year. Some courses may vary, however, and you can find information on the total number of credits achieved per module below.
Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll be studying throughout the
Year OneYear TwoOptional Placement YearFinal Year
ModulesExpand all +
Economics and Data Analysis for Managers
Businesses run on decisions, and the best decisions are built on evidence. This module works through the methods professional economists and data analysts actually use. You will apply concepts to real management problems: examine trade-offs, allocate resources and draw conclusions from data. Hands-on practice is built in throughout, so you leave with skills you can use.
20 credits
Foundations of Managing and Organising
Why do some organisations thrive and others stall? You’ll find out how people are managed and motivated, how teams work in person and remotely, and how leadership shapes the culture. You'll get a sharper eye for why organisations are structured the way they are. And you'll put the theory to work through workplace simulation activities, practising the skills before you need them for real.
Accounting and Finance for Managers
Behind every business decision sits a set of numbers, and you'll learn to read them properly. You'll examine how businesses are financed and the limits that financing creates, how accounting profit is calculated, and how to identify the cash flows and break-even points relevant to a project decision. You'll build skills in budgeting, cash and working capital management, and financial statement construction, along with appraising long-term capital investments and valuing company shares.
Essentials of Business Development
Organisations of every kind face the same fundamental pressure: how to grow and stay resilient when the world keeps shifting. You'll examine how different types of organisation make decisions, develop operations, and respond to external threats and opportunities. Entrepreneurial thinking runs through the module, alongside the practical skills needed to spot a problem and design a solution.
Principles of Marketing
You'll build your marketing knowledge around a real brief: developing a new product idea for an actual business. As you work through the process, you'll cover the core concepts from customer segmentation and the marketing mix to new product development. By the end, you'll know how to identify what customers want, build a case for delivering it, and present a marketing plan with both a UK and international dimension.
Personal and Academic Development
From your first days at university, to the end of year one, you'll build the foundations a business career needs: data literacy, professional digital skills, and a clear picture of your own strengths. You'll explore Nottingham's real business landscape, understand what employers look for, and put together a development plan that maps your ambitions to the career you want.
First half of Year Two – Core modulesExpand all +
Macroeconomics Theory and Applications
The module is designed to introduce you to key macroeconomic issues both in a national and international context. In doing so, it will introduce theoretical and conceptual building blocks which are required by economists to analyse macroeconomic issues.
Microeconomics Theory and Applications
The module is designed to introduce key microeconomic theory which will enable you to analyse the choices that face consumers, businesses and governments and hence the decisions these economic agents make. It aims to explore the interconnectedness of these decisions and the factors that shape both the choices of economic agents and the resulting outcomes. The module will develop a framework which will allow you to understand the arguments around market failure and government intervention.
Economics in Action
The module covers vital subjects as theories of economic growth, economic inequality, poverty and malnutrition, population growth, trade policy, and the markets for factors (land, labour, and credit) and output. Real examples and cases studies from around the world will be used to support the theoretical arguments.
Second half of Year Two – Optional unique opportunitiesExpand all +
Study Abroad
Experience life in another country by studying at one of our partner universities. Choose from a host of countries in Europe or go further afield and study in the USA, South America, Australasia and South East Asia. This is a great opportunity to develop your independence and explore another culture.
60 credits
Enterprise Project
Turn your business idea into something real. Based in the award-winning Dryden Enterprise Centre, you’ll develop a new venture or grow an existing one with support from academic and business mentors. You’ll explore your market, define your audience, shape a practical marketing and growth plan, consider finances and sustainability, and learn how to pitch your idea with confidence inside a real start-up environment.
Internship
Get a taste of the working world and gain some essential industry insight with a 12-15 week work placement. The experience will allow you to put your learning in to practice, with the experience gained improving your future career prospects, and sharpening your interpersonal and professional skills.
Or continue with taught modules. Core modules:Expand all +
Applied Professional Development
This unique module supports you to refine the attributes and behaviours that will make you stand out in the workplace. The module features a dynamic week-long conference, packed with inspirational guest speakers to get you thinking about the future of work and the part you want to play. Later, you'll engage in a period of work or work-like experience, developing a range of practical skills and the mindset to navigate your future with confidence. You'll also complete a mock video job interview which will hone your ability to respond with strong, well-thought-through answers under time pressure, and help you to clinch your dream work placement or future graduate role.
Survey Research and Analysis
You'll learn to plan and run a survey, from designing a research instrument that gets you data you can trust, to collecting responses and analysing them with statistical software. You'll apply analytical methods to real data drawn from across the business world, then interpret your findings and communicate them clearly to a business audience. It's a skill you'll use in almost any role that depends on making decisions from evidence rather than guesswork.
Plus one optional module from:Expand all +
Marketing Management
This module explores the role of marketing management and its interaction with other business functions. You will study marketing management concepts that are used during the development of sound marketing strategies, and will develop effective group and personal skills that are valued highly by organisational employers. You will learn about the application of marketing tools to different contexts, as well as segmentation, targeting and positioning.
People, Organisations and Society
This module aims to explore and evaluate several contemporary business aspects affecting individuals and organisations from a practical perspective. It seeks to assess the theoretical perspectives of managing people, human behaviour and the evolving nature of work.
Exploring Strategy and Innovation
Competitive advantage doesn't happen by accident. You'll examine how organisations build it through strategic management, innovation and business development, in a global context, and be introduced to key concepts in strategy, organisational change and development from different cultural contexts. From there, you'll dig into innovation itself, what it actually is and the processes involved in bringing it about.
In your third year, you can choose to spend a year in industry, study at one of our international partner institutions, or continue straight through to your final year.
A placement year is a chance to test what you've learned in a real working environment and build your CV before you graduate. Our recent Business Management and Economics students have secured placements with companies including Boots, Amazon, GE and Toyota.
Studying abroad is a different kind of experience, but equally valuable. Time at an international partner institution builds the adaptability, independence and cross-cultural awareness that stand out on a graduate application.
Whatever path you choose, our Employability team is here to help you prepare, whether that's finding placements, exploring self-employment, volunteering or getting advice on further study. As an NTU graduate, you'll also retain access to their services for three years after you finish.
Continue with taught modules
If you choose not to take a placement year or study abroad, you’ll continue directly into your final year. Please see the ‘Final Year’ tab for your list of modules.
Core modulesExpand all +
Business Economics
This module has three key focuses, the role of government within an economy, industry-level analysis, and on the individual firm and the workers it employs. The key themes you will study include firm strategies, growth, pricing, innovation, advertising, managerial-labour relations, and the implications of these factors for the firms themselves, their employees, and policy-makers. Through this module you will learn to use economic techniques to analyse the workings of industries and firms, in their market context. You will also explore a range of alternative economic theories of the behaviour of firms, and their employees and analyse government policies towards industries and firms.
International Development Economics
During this module you will examine the common problems confronting the developing world and explore the suggested solutions. By examining examples and case studies from around the world you will cover vital subjects such as theories of economic growth, economic inequality, poverty and malnutrition, population growth, trade policy, and the markets for factors (land, labour, and credit) and output. There is no single cause for economic progress, so you will be guided to view economic development as an outcome of a combination of factors among them the improvement of physical and human capital, the reduction of inequality, and institutions that enable the background flow of information essential to market performance.
Investment and Portfolio Management
This module examines appropriate Investment and Portfolio Management theory. You will have the opportunity to put this theory into practice principally via the construction and running of a portfolio of equities.
Developing Professional Impact
This module provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the skills and behaviours you've developed throughout your degree and put them to the test in a "live" consultancy project set by a real organisation. Working in a team with other students you'll address the brief and present your findings and recommendations to the client and your tutors. Later in the module you'll explore subject specific competences for career readiness and debate important themes on the agenda of all businesses such as diversity and inclusiveness, ethics and sustainability. By the end of the module, you'll have a sharper understanding of the impact you want to make to business and society and the confidence to take your next steps forward with purpose.
Optional modules - choose one from:Expand all +
Applied Business Research Project
For this module you will undertake a purposeful, individual, in depth study of a relevant topic, developing your independent learning, critical thinking and knowledge of research techniques relevant to your subject area. The project will develop your ability to manage a major piece of work, for which you will be completely responsible, and will be completed over a period of several months. You will learn to utilise and improve your time management and communication skills, as well as test your initiative and resourcefulness. To support your development during this module you will study essential skills such as critical thinking, conducting a literature review, understanding the appropriate research framework, practical research methods and skills, report and academic writing skills.
Sustainability Impact Project
This module is designed to give you a deeper understanding of sustainability issues affecting firms. It incorporates a live consultancy experience, where you are required to apply your knowledge to critically review aspects of enterprise practice and infrastructure and recommend ways to reduce carbon emissions. You will learn how to critically review sustainability issues presented by an enterprise and analyse evidence, arguments, concepts and data to formulate sustainability and carbon management recommendations for an enterprise.
Managing Creativity, Design and Innovation
The development of successful products and services involves complex processes and is dependent on how well research, design and innovation activities are integrated with other functions in the organisation. This module will develop your understanding of the relationships between creativity, design and innovation and explore and debate a range of perspectives concerning their nature. It will develop your critical awareness of theories related to the origins and role of creativity at individual, team and organisational levels, and teach you to appreciate, understand and contemplate some of the issues facing organisations trying to harness the potential from their creative resources.
Corporate Governance and Risk Management
During this module you will study current recommendations and developments in the field of corporate governance both in the UK and in a selection of overseas countries. The module aims to highlight the importance of control and risk management when implementing strong governance measures, and will evaluate the ethical and moral dilemmas faced by those entrusted with these responsibilities. You will also learn to determine and evaluate measures of fraud identification, prevention and investigation.
Data Mining and Financial Data Analysis
Every phone call and card transaction leaves a data trail, and businesses have got very good at mining it for patterns. You'll learn how data mining and financial data analysis techniques turn billions of scattered data points into insight about customers and markets, using tools from statistics, computer science and artificial intelligence. You'll work out which analysis technique fits a given problem and what data it needs, then apply predictive and data mining techniques to build a competitive advantage.
We regularly review our course content based on student and employer feedback to ensure they remain current and relevant. This may result in changes to module content or availability in future years. Optional modules will only run where there is sufficient demand. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis to protect the academic and student experience.

How you're taught
NTU is TEF ‘Gold’-rated for teaching and learning, and one of the UK’s top 20 universities for economics (Guardian University Guide 2024). Our team of tutors have worked with organisations like Barclays, Halifax, Co-Op, Allied Irish Bank, and the Nigerian State Ministry of Youths and Social Development; with decades of first-hand professional experience, they know exactly what employers are looking for. You’ll also learn from a roll call of exciting guest lecturers — from visionary charities, to multinational finance houses like Capital One, to our own returning alumni. See our Business Leaders Lecture series and podcast to find out more.
As well as lectures and seminars, you’ll learn through:
Networking — whether you’re hearing from a senior finance executive in your lectures or attending the prestigious ‘Future of Work’ conference, you’ll learn lots (and build meaningful connections) by meeting leaders in business.
Working as a researcher and business consultant on a range of credit-bearing projects. Explore specialist areas of economics, collaborate with your coursemates, and help companies solve real-world business challenges.
Completing internships and placements. You’ll have the chance to take on a 16-18-week internship in Year Two, or a 48-week professional placement in Year Three of the sandwich pathway. Only recently, our students have secured placements with organisations like Toyota, Balfour Beatty, and the NHS — with some of them receiving job offers before they’ve even graduated.
Making your own choices. As the course develops, so too will your options. If you dream of studying abroad, you could attend one of our summer schools, or complete an extended stay with one of our global partners — anywhere from Sweden to South Korea. Looking to stay local? If the internship or consultancy project pathways don’t appeal, you can simply continue with your taught modules. It’s a versatile offer, built around your own preferences.
How you're assessed
People learn in different ways, and we want each one of our students to have the best possible chance of success. Our diverse range of assessment methods includes live group pitches and presentations, real-world consultancy projects and business challenges, blogging and journaling, independent researching, business reporting, personal development, and reflective learning. You’ll also complete on-campus, open-book exams, where you can count on the support and guidance of your tutors.
Contact hours
For each 20-credit module, you’ll spend about 200 hours learning overall. Around 40 of those hours will be taught in lectures or seminars. The rest of the time is for independent study, reading, research, or working on assignments.
