Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll be studying throughout the
Year OneYear TwoOptional placement yearFinal Year
ModulesExpand all +
Practical Conservation Skills
Working on either the Brackenhurst Estate or on sites managed by external organisations, you will participate in a range of practical habitat management activities such as coppicing ancient woodland or managing grasslands, and identify how these management techniques can improve conditions for nature. You will develop confidence in the use of a range of tools and gain insight into creating a safe working environment.
20 credits
Animal Structure, Function and Adaptation
Explore animal anatomy and physiology across a range of species. You'll delve into cellular biology, genetic processes, survival strategies and how animals adapt to environmental challenges in various ecosystems.
Introduction to Agribusiness
This module provides an overview of the social and economic environment in which the industry operates. You'll learn about farm business structures, farm management and accounts. You'll also examine industry roles and reflect on your own interests in the sector.
Agricultural Operations and Technologies
Develop practical experience of on‑farm operations, including safe machinery use, livestock tasks and responsible pesticide application, while gaining essential knowledge of regenerative farming practices. You’ll also build lab‑based research skills that support sustainable farming.
Plants and Soil
A practical introduction to how plants and soils work, and why they’re so important for understanding habitats and managing land. You’ll learn how plants grow and adapt, explore what makes healthy soil, discover the role of the soil microbiome, and start developing your plant identification skills.
Crop and Livestock Production Systems
Learn how different crop and livestock systems operate around the world, and why they vary with climate, scale and farming approaches. You’ll explore systems from grassland to intensive and regenerative farming, gaining a broad understanding of modern production challenges and opportunities.
During Year Two, you will study four core modules and choose two optional modules, one from each section.
Core modulesExpand all +
Disease Investigation and Epidemiology
Study the causes, processes and control of infectious and non-infectious diseases of current veterinary and/or conservation importance. Apply knowledge of pathogen biology and disease processes to contemporary management issues in animal populations.
Introduction to Research
Explore the principles of research methods, focusing on data collection, analysis, and interpretation. You'll look at experimental design, literature evaluation and hypothesis testing, preparing you for undertaking independent research as part of your final year dissertation.
Land Use Ecology
Explore land uses such as farming and forestry, whose productivity is determined by the presence and products of ecological processes, and the impacts of humans upon them. How can we balance the needs of humans and wildlife in the most sustainable way?
Crop Nutrition, Health and Protection
Learn how nutrients, fertilisers and sustainable pest and disease management support healthy crop production. You’ll also build microbiology, lab and digital skills, including GIS and drone use, that are essential in modern precision agriculture.
Global Climate Challenges
Explore the global climate emergency from environmental, social, political and ethical perspectives, and investigate why climate impacts are felt differently across regions and communities. You will analyse historic trends and future climate scenarios, evaluate mitigation and adaptation strategies, and consider the justice and equity issues that shape real-world climate action.

Campus and facilities
As a dedicated home for our animal, rural and environmental science courses, the Brackenhurst Campus, has a character all of its own. From the population of almost 2,000 students and staff to the animals themselves - cats and cattle, sheep and horses - it’s all about community. Relax with a coffee in the Orangery; kick back with your coursemates in the Brack Bar; enjoy the peace and quiet of our Victorian walled garden or Eco-Library; grab a pal and wander through 500 acres of stunning countryside.
You'll have access to a countryside estate featuring a working farm, a herd of award-winning Lincolnshire Red cattle and a flock of sheep, a wide range of arable crops, industry-standard agricultural facilities and machinery, and dedicated glasshouse facilities. Together, these provide the perfect outdoor classroom, enabling you to put theory into practice from day one.
Our Brackenhurst Campus sits on the doorstep of Southwell: a picture-perfect market town filled with rustic pubs, cosy cafés, and boutique shops. A little further afield, and served by reliable buses that run late into the night, you’ve got Nottingham - one of Britain’s top 10 student cities, and one of Europe’s top 25.
