Module information
A standard full-time BSc (Hons) course is made up of 120 credits studied each year. Some courses may vary, however, and you can find information on the total number of credits achieved per module below.
Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll be studying throughout the
Year OneYear TwoOptional Placement YearFinal Year
ModulesExpand all +
Calculus
The module aims to consolidate and extend previous knowledge of calculus, with emphasis on the underlying intuition of the techniques. Methods taught will include professional mathematical writing, definitions of limits and functions, differentiation and integration, from the fundamental principles, to integrating and differentiating complicated functions. This is then extended to multi-dimensional coordinate systems.
Finally, we will study ordinary differential equations, which describe changes in real-world systems. These will be solved by applying the techniques from the first part of the module. Overall, this module will underpin material that you will encounter in many subsequent modules, both in the same and other fields.
20 credits
Data Analysis
This module provides a foundation to data analysis and statistics, designed for students with no prior background in the subject. Using user-friendly statistical software, it offers a practical approach to exploring key concepts. Assessments are structured around work like experience, incorporating big data applications and global sustainability targets.
Beyond technical skills, the module fosters employability by developing teamwork, oral presentation abilities, and effective communication with non-specialist audiences. Beginning with data visualisation and fundamental statistical principles, it progresses to more advanced topics such as expectation and conditional probability, ensuring a solid foundation in statistical reasoning needed for the advance topics in higher years.
Introduction to Linear Algebra and Computation
Studying Linear Algebra gives you a great base knowledge you’ll use in many modules during your course. Concepts include complex numbers, vectors and matrices. Using mathematical software packages you’ll focus on computational and numerical methods that can be used to find approximate solutions to problems that cannot be solved analytically.
Introduction to Discrete Mathematics and its Applications
You’ll start by learning how to program using Python before investigating several problems in discrete mathematics. Working in groups, you’ll discover potential solutions, which will be formalised into algorithms that can be implemented in Python.
Introduction to Economics and Finance
This module is introduction to the concepts from Finance and Economics that support topics for the higher years of the course. Peer-learning and active collaborative work is in the core of the module. Familiarity with financial products like shares and bonds and the mechanisms of their trading are built on hands-on activities.
Several current topics related to national and international economies are also explored through examples and discussions. The module will explain key events in finance from a global economic perspective. By comparing international responses to market crashes we'll link policy decisions to economic theory. This will give you the basis to put forward your own economic approach to dealing with the issues we face today.
Accounting and Finance for Managers
Behind every business decision sits a set of numbers, and you'll learn to read them properly. You'll examine how businesses are financed and the limits that financing creates, how accounting profit is calculated, and how to identify the cash flows and break-even points relevant to a project decision. You'll build skills in budgeting, cash and working capital management, and financial statement construction, along with appraising long-term capital investments and valuing company shares.
Core modulesExpand all +
Differential Equations
This module develops your understanding of differential equations and how they can be used to model real-world systems. You'll explore advanced analytical and numerical solution techniques while gaining practical experience with tools such as MATLAB and LaTeX. Strengthen your computational, problem-solving and teamwork skills needed for higher-level mathematics and a range of technical careers.
Probability and Statistical Inference
Refine your statistical inference and modelling knowledge and develop essential computational and IT skills.
Mathematical Enterprise
In this module you’ll work in small teams to develop a plan for a new business or enterprise, using your mathematical skills to showcase the viability of your venture. This module is run in conjunction with local businesses.
Discrete-Time Financial Mathematics
Discrete-time mathematical models form the backbone of financial engineering and in this module you’ll explore how to use these models for derivatives pricing, evaluating risk, and portfolio management. You’ll use tools such as the arbitrage principle and binomial trees, and perform portfolio optimisation. This module is a blend of theory, hands-on problem solving and real-world case studies, through which you’ll develop the skills necessary for careers in quantitative finance, risk management, and investment.
Optional modules - choose oneExpand all +
Linear Algebra and its Applications
This module will build your conceptual and technical background, and, in particular, work on vector spaces will be extended and generalised to linear transformations. You will be introduced to coding theory by applying linear algebra to linear codes.
Cryptography and Computational Complexity
Learn how to select and apply appropriate techniques and use computer programming and specialist mathematical software to help solve problems. You’ll look at the need to develop more and more sophisticated ways of protecting information through cryptography. Analyse the hardness and limitations of mathematical algorithms using computational complexity theory.
Corporate Financial Analysis
Every company tells a story about its own performance in its annual report, and you'll learn to read past the story to the numbers underneath. You'll examine the main financial statements alongside the narrative report, and learn to spot the gap between what a company says and what its accounts actually show. You'll identify who relies on these reports, from investors to regulators, and use them, alongside other sources like regulatory filings, to critically assess a company's financial performance and health.
Financial Management
This module assesses the value creation activity of organisations through their investment and financing strategies, focusing on finance theories and their application in practice. You will be equipped with the ability to analyse scenarios, case studies and actual companies with respect to financial management. You will also learn to evaluate alternative proposals and to communicate information to a business audience in an effective manner.
Optional year-long work placement. If you are not taking a placement, you will progress directly to your final year in year three.
Project and Professional Skills
Immerse yourself in a substantial mathematics project with dedicated support and supervision. The project will showcase your skills, knowledge, and problem-solving abilities. You’ll also take part in activities to explore your career options after graduation.
40 credits
Medical Statistics and Financial Modelling
The medical side will focus on clinical trial design (how to test novel drugs, when to use placebos etc.) and survival analysis (how we display fatality rates and compare survival chances). The financial side will look at Time Series modelling; the dark arts of using statistical models to predict envelopes for future stock performance! This model gets you to practically apply analytical skills in two of the big growth fields for Maths employment.
Continuous-Time Financial Mathematics
Continuing on the models and concept understanding from the discrete-time financial mathematics module, you will explore the Black-Scholes equation, including its advantages and limitations. You will examine various hedging strategies, understanding their theoretical foundations and practical implementations under market conditions.
Additionally, the module introduces non-insurance mathematics including ruin probability, a crucial metric in assessing financial risk of insurance models. Balancing theory with real-world data analysis, this course provides hands-on experience in applying mathematical techniques to financial problem-solving.
Experimental Design and Machine Learning
This module will show you how to get the most of real-life data. In the experimental design half, you’ll learn the methodology and techniques to design, conduct and analyse an experiment before applying statistical analysis to your results to ensure you get the best data possible. The machine learning half will show you how to get the most out of any dataset you may come across in your future career.
Stochastic Processes
Extend your understanding of probabilistic modelling to include stochastic processes and learn advanced techniques for investigating the behaviour of stochastic processes.
Linear Systems
You will continue your previous studies in linear algebra and differential and difference equations.
Optimisation
The optimisation is the art of optimal decision-making under constraints. This module introduces you to optimisation, focussing on the theoretical foundations of the subject, the practical modelling aspects, and the algorithm analysis and design.
Corporate Finance
This module evaluates the impact of financial decisions on investments, financing, and risk management, developing your critical analysis and evaluation skills. You'll study valuations of firms, merger and acquisitions, financial restructuring and risk theory.
Investment and Portfolio Management
This module examines appropriate Investment and Portfolio Management theory. You will have the opportunity to put this theory into practice principally via the construction and running of a portfolio of equities.
We regularly review our course content based on student and employer feedback to ensure they remain current and relevant. This may result in changes to module content or availability in future years. Optional modules will only run where there is sufficient demand. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis to protect the academic and student experience.
