Discover what you'll learn, what you'll study, and how you'll be taught and assessed.
Year one
The first two years are the same as the first two years of Mathematics BSc (Hons). In year one, you will study six compulsory modules to learn the fundamentals of a range of mathematical topics.
You will also take the following compulsory modules:

Programme details and modules listed are illustrative only and subject to change. This course has been updated for 2027 entry as part of a review of all our programmes. This review has considered refining study pathways, strengthening links with employers, integrating generative AI, developing students’ research skills, and enhancing alignment with our research strengths. Please note, as at all times, the University reserves the right to make reasonable changes, including to content, entry requirements, or fees, or to discontinue programmes. Applicants will be informed of any significant change.

All students complete the capstone project module MATH395.
Students follow the same programme as Mathematics BSc (Hons) in year three, taking the Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics or Theoretical Physics pathway.
Each pathway has three required modules in semester one of year three, and a range of option modules in semester two. The pathway also determines which modules are studied in year 4.
Students can opt to take one year four module in semester 2 of year three, followed by one level three module in semester one of year four.
This route provides access to a wider range of option modules across the two years. In particular, this allows some of the modules on Statistics, Probability and Operational Research from Mathematics BSc (Hons).
Overall, there are 10 possible pathways that students can choose between.

Teaching and assessment
How you'll learn
You’ll be taught through a diverse blend of engaging teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, practical classes, video content, interactive learning sessions, independent study, and supervised project work.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a vibrant, stimulating, and supportive learning environment with highly motivated and exceptionally qualified staff, renowned for their world-leading research and teaching.
For the year one semester one module MATH113 (Core Mathematics I), students meet in small groups to discuss problems with academic tutors. These tutorials also help develop students’ ability to write, present, and discuss complex material. For other modules, small-group tutorials are replaced by problem classes in larger groups, which allow students to develop their problem-solving skills in an interactive environment.
All lecturers are available for one-to-one or small group support during regular office hours. Independent study is expected throughout the programme, and students are directed to reading lists and other resources to support it.
How you're assessed
Assessment is by end-of-semester examinations and/or continuous assessment. All mathematics modules have a coursework component. Forms of assessment used within the department include problem sheets, class tests, individual and group project work, report and essay writing, individual and group presentations, portfolio creation and reflective writing.
