## Overview
BSc Hons Marine Science is the integrated study of the biological, physical and chemical aspects of our coasts and oceans. It covers marine biology and ecology, sea level change, marine geology, underwater archaeology, oceanography and ocean engineering, and the oceans as an economic resource and as a global climate regulator.
Oceans provide many opportunities for sustainable communities through renewable energy schemes, carbon sequestration and sustainable fishing. The Ocean or Blue Economy is growing each year; in 2024 was worth $1.5 trillion and it is expected to reach $3 trillion by 2030 (LSE, 2024). In fact, if considered a country, the Ocean Economy would be the world’s fifth-largest economy in 2019 (OECD, (2025). The Ocean Economy generates millions of jobs both in coastal regions and in the European Union as a whole.
Four and a half million jobs were generated by the Ocean Economy in 2019, representing around 2.3% of all EU jobs.
Why study marine science with us?
* Our course is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences
* We are located on the Coleraine Campus, minutes away from the spectacular Causeway Coast with lots of natural laboratories to explore including the open sea, estuaries, rivers, lakes, woodlands and uplands
* We are ranked #1 in the UK in Research Impact in Geography and Environmental Studies (REF, 2021)
* An outstanding 88% of our research has been judged as world-leading or internationally excellent (REF, 2021).

## About this course
The human population, estimated at 8.2 billion in 2025, is expected to increase to 11 billion by 2100. With the majority of the world’s largest cities located in coastal zones, more than 75% of people are expected to live within 100 km of the coast by 2025. At a time of unprecedented environmental change on Earth, society is having to adapt to processes and hazards that are poorly understood.
Now, more than ever, society needs STEM graduates with an interdisciplinary understanding of the complexity and uncertainty of the marine and atmospheric systems, and with the skills and competencies to observe, measure, model and manage these systems. We achieve this in our marine science degree through the integration of theoretical, practical and field-based approaches. Our Coleraine campus is ideally located on the Causeway Coast, one of the world’s most spectacular natural laboratories.

### Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Teaching is through a range of methods such as lectures, seminars and tutorials but with an emphasis on practical and field work. Students are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations.
Each module adopts its own assessment strategy and may include one or more of the following: essays; literature reviews/critical reviews; laboratory reports; fieldwork reports; field notebooks; individual and group project reports; problem analysis; research projects/dissertations; individual and group oral and poster presentations; class tests; web-site design and examinations.
## Academic Delivery and Award Information
The content for each course is summarised on the relevant course page, along with an overview of the modules that make up the course.
Each course is approved by the University and meets the expectations of:
* the relevant generic national Qualification Descriptor
* the applicable Subject Benchmark Statement
* the requirements of any professional, regulatory, statutory and accrediting bodies.
Attendance and Independent Study
As part of your course induction, you will be provided with details of the organisation and management of the course, including attendance and assessment requirements - usually in the form of a timetable.
For full-time courses, the precise timetable for each semester is not confirmed until close to the start date and may be subject to some change in the early weeks as all courses settle into their planned patterns. For part-time courses which require attendance on particular days and times, an expectation of the days and periods of attendance will be included in the letter of offer. A course handbook is also made available.
Courses comprise modules for which the notional effort involved is indicated by its credit rating. Each credit point represents 10 hours of student effort. Undergraduate courses typically contain 10, 20, or 40 credit modules (more usually 20).
The normal study load expectation for an undergraduate full-time course of study in the standard academic year is 120 credit points. This amounts to around 36-42 hours of expected teaching and learning per week, inclusive of attendance requirements for lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical work, fieldwork or other scheduled classes, private study, and assessment. Teaching and learning activities will be in-person and/or online depending on the nature of the course.
Part-time study load is the same as full-time pro-rata, with each credit point representing 10 hours of student effort.
Class contact times vary by course and type of module. Typically, for a module predominantly delivered through lectures you can expect at least 3 contact hours per week (lectures/seminars/tutorials). Laboratory classes often require a greater intensity of attendance in blocks. Some modules may combine lecture and laboratory. The precise model will depend on the course you apply for and may be subject to change from year to year for quality or enhancement reasons.
Prospective students will be consulted about any significant changes.
Assessment
Assessment methods vary and are defined explicitly in each module. Assessment can be a combination of examination and coursework but may also be only one of these methods. Assessment is designed to assess your achievement of the module’s stated learning outcomes. You can expect to receive timely feedback on all coursework assessments. This feedback may be issued individually and/or issued to the group, and you will be encouraged to act on this feedback for your own development.
Coursework can take many forms, for example: essay, report, seminar paper, test, presentation, dissertation, design, artefacts, portfolio, journal, group work. The precise form and combination of assessment will depend on the course you apply for and the module. Details will be made available in advance through induction, the course handbook, the module specification, the assessment timetable and the assessment brief. The details are subject to change from year to year for quality or enhancement reasons.
You will be consulted about any significant changes.
Normally, a module will have 4 learning outcomes, and no more than 2 items of assessment. An item of assessment can comprise more than one task. The notional workload and the equivalence across types of assessment is standardised. The module pass mark for undergraduate courses is 40%.
Calculation of the Final Award
The class of Honours awarded in Bachelor’s degrees is usually determined by calculation of an aggregate mark based on performance across the modules at Levels 5 and 6, (which correspond to the second and third year of full-time attendance).
Level 6 modules contribute 70% of the aggregate mark and Level 5 contributes 30% to the calculation of the class of the award. Classification of integrated Master’s degrees with Honours include a Level 7 component. The calculation in this case is: 50% Level 7, 30% Level 6, 20% Level 5. At least half the Level 5 modules must be studied at the University for Level 5 to be included in the calculation of the class.
This module will foster and extend students' knowledge and understanding of the principal threats to marine ecosystems, and identify the main directions of management and conservation. State-of-the-art techniques for studying marine ecoystems, focusing on predictive modelling, Geographic Information Systems, multivariate analyses and systems of benthic habitat classification will be considered.
The principal threats to these ecosystems from climate change, exploitation, pollution and other anthropogenic sources will be assessed and contextualised within the primary literature. The future management and prospects for marine ecosystems will be discussed.
#### Applied Oceanography
This module is designed to examine the physical and chemical aspects of the ocean environment. It provides an understanding of physical and chemical processes in marine waters on various spatial and temporal scales, from large-scale circulation patterns to small-scale flow and processes, from the deep-sea to the surface and from the coastlines to offshore zones, and how this impacts marine as well as terrestrial life on Earth.
The theoretical component of the module will be provided by lectures, which will cover a contemporary thinking into physical and chemical concepts of ocean science. The practical element of the module will consist of laboratory and field-based exercises.
### Optional Modules
Optional modules are reviewed on a Programme each year and we may change the options available to you, to reflect our staff expertise, changes in Programme requirements or to reflect feedback that we have received from other Students, employers or other interested parties.
If your Programme contains optional modules, you will be provided with a list of these in good time so that you can choose the options right for you each year. Sometimes, we may not be able to run a particular optional module because not enough Students sign up for it or because a member of staff is not available to teach a module.
Where this may be the case, we will let you know when you are provided with your option choices, and you will be able to choose an alternative if one of your selected modules does not run.
