## Overview
Tourism is a magical portal to unfamiliar landscapes, diverse cultures and traditions, and human connections. Its appeal lies not just in the destinations chosen, but also in the anticipation of what awaits — a journey filled with surprises, self-discovery, and the thrill of the unexplored.
Tourism is constantly evolving: increasingly sustainable travel and tourism practices ensure that future generations will be able to marvel at the wonders of the world as well.
In addition, tourism is a key economic player - popular tourist destinations become economic hubs, providing livelihoods for local communities.
An estimated 1.52 billion tourists travelled internationally in 2025. Almost 60 million more than in 2024, reflecting a return to pre-pandemic growth trends (closer to the 5% average increase per year) (UNWTO, 2025).
Furthermore, in 2024, the sector supported a total of 357 million jobs globally, which is approximately 1 in 10 jobs! (WTTC, 2025).
Travel and tourism play an important role in Northern Ireland’s economy too. According to data published by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA) (2025), the destination received 4.7 million overnight visitors in 2024, who generated £1.1 billion spend, with tourism contributing approximately 5% of GDP (NI Tourism Alliance, 2023).
Hence, employment opportunities are great for graduates of tourism both at home and abroad!
Why should you study International Tourism Management at Ulster University? Because we are among the best in the UK! Indeed, the Department of Hospitality, Tourism, and Events Management (HTEM) has been ranked 3rd in Hospitality, Event Management and Tourism in the UK by the Guardian University Guide (2026). This is a prestigious recognition!
Additionally, in 2024, Ulster University received the title of University of the Year by the Times Higher Education. This is another excellent award!
These special accolades have been achieved thanks to the pastoral care, dedication, and competence of the academic staff in HTEM. We have an award-winning team with a wealth of knowledge and experience in research and industry across a range of dynamic areas of tourism and travel.
The course will allow you to develop a detailed knowledge of tourism, travel and the associated skills necessary for managing and leading businesses in this evolving and dynamic sector that is highly customer focused and media driven.
What are you waiting for? Your future starts now!

Attendance and Independent Study
As part of your course induction, you will be provided with details of the organisation and management of the course, including attendance and assessment requirements - usually in the form of a timetable.
For full-time courses, the precise timetable for each semester is not confirmed until close to the start date and may be subject to some change in the early weeks as all courses settle into their planned patterns. For part-time courses which require attendance on particular days and times, an expectation of the days and periods of attendance will be included in the letter of offer. A course handbook is also made available.

Teaching and learning activities will be in-person and/or online depending on the nature of the course.
#### Digital Marketing Management

The key elements and practices of developing and executing comprehensive digital marketing strategies, to create impactful campaigns are explored and applied. The inquiry-based and authentic learning approach allows students to enhance vital employability skills and digital innovation capabilities while applying strategic concepts to drive sustainable business growth.
#### Contemporary Issues in Leisure, Tourism and Events
This module is optional
This module provides students with an opportunity to research, discuss and analyse current issues in leisure, tourism and events. Lectures and seminars provide an overview of key issues but the module also has a research emphasis and students are expected to research a current issue. Although students are not allowed to use the same title this module does provide a foundation for the research paper which is an optional module in the second semester.
### Optional Modules
Optional modules are reviewed on a Programme each year and we may change the options available to you, to reflect our staff expertise, changes in Programme requirements or to reflect feedback that we have received from other Students, employers or other interested parties.
If your Programme contains optional modules, you will be provided with a list of these in good time so that you can choose the options right for you each year. Sometimes, we may not be able to run a particular optional module because not enough Students sign up for it or because a member of staff is not available to teach a module.
