About this course
European Social and Political Studies BA students learn from leading UCL academics and gain international perspectives through links with European and global experts.
The degree will prepare you for an international career through a multidisciplinary course which blends humanities and social sciences with language learning. You will gain expertise in a disciplinary specialism, fluency in a language, and spend a year studying at one of our partner universities in Europe. You will develop a core understanding of economics, law, history, philosophy or politics and gain important transferable skills which can be applied to careers in the private sector, education, media, international development and government.
Students select one major language and a specialism from the humanities or social sciences.
Specialisms
In your first and second year, you will select introductory and foundational modules in your chosen specialism:
Economics (full Economics or Element of Economics)
European Politics
Geography
International Relations
Philosophy
Political Theory
Qualitative Data Science
Languages
Scandinavian Languages (Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian or Swedish)
School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies Languages (Czech/Slovak, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian/Croatian, Ukrainian)
Spanish (A Level in Spanish required)
Adding a second (minor) language is optional. Two ab initio languages are not normally allowed.
With the exception of Spanish, all languages can be studied from beginner level. You should not select a language you are already fluent in.
In addition to language tuition, language departments offer modules in literature, linguistics, history, history of ideas, art and film as well as social, political and cultural studies.
Year Abroad
The third year of your studies is spent abroad at one of our partner institutions in Europe. We aim to send students to countries where their major language is spoken. However, this may depend on geopolitical circumstances, other circumstances and availability and may not be possible in all cases.
You will be expected to meet the academic prerequisites set by our partner institutions in order to participate in their exchange programme - you will receive guidance on this during Year 2. During the exchange year in Year 3, you will take modules at your host university and complete preparatory research for your dissertation.
Final Year Dissertation
In your final year, you return to UCL to continue with advanced modules in your language and your humanities/social science subject, and also write your dissertation under the supervision of a member of staff.
Who this course is for
We are seeking applicants who are intellectually curious, up to date on current affairs and passionate about learning about other countries, languages, and cultures. They appreciate the flexibility of our courses, and are able to work independently in a challenging, interdisciplinary academic environment.
Course structure
You will take 30–45 credits in the language department, 45–60 credits in a humanities or social science specialism and the 30-credit first year core module ESPS0001: Introduction to History, Law, Politics and Philosophy.
You will take 45 credits in the language department, 60 credits in your humanities or social science specialism and 15 credits of additional options language or specialism.

You will take modules at your host university and complete preparatory tasks for your dissertation.
In your final year, you will take 15–30 credits in the language department depending on your choice of language, 30 credits for the dissertation and 60–75 credits in your humanities or social science specialism. The dissertation is not compulsory for those on the full Economics specialism.
In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year.
