Mathematics helps us see patterns, understand complex systems. It is used to solve problems in science, technology, business, and society.
At Dundee, you will build a solid base in pure and applied mathematics. You’ll also learn how to apply mathematical concepts in real-world situations. As you progress through your degree, you’ll shift from solving set problems to tackling more complex, open-ended challenges.
During the course, you will:
* develop core knowledge of algebra, calculus and geometry
* explore advanced topics such as numerical analysis, mathematical analysis, and statistical modelling
* use mathematics to investigate practical challenges
* develop skills in mathematical computing and programming
* learn from research-active mathematicians and explore contemporary mathematical ideas
* undertake increasingly independent work, culminating in your own Honours project
#### Mathematics in the real world
Mathematics is not only about finding the right answer. It is about deciding how to approach a problem in the first place.
At Dundee, you will learn how to use mathematical ideas to model, analyse, and understand real situations. You will gain experience with computational tasks. You will also apply mathematical techniques to problems without known solutions.
As you progress, you will have opportunities to undertake more independent and open-ended work. This includes an individual final year project where you can explore a mathematical problem in depth.
“Maths as a discipline shows you have a lot of transferable skills and you are able to analyse and adapt to situations. You learn so many things that can't be taught by any other degree. ”
Jasmine Kirkwood, Mathematics student
#### Maths at scale. Learning made personal.
Mathematics helps us understand problems of all sizes. It applies to individual systems and to challenges that impact industries, societies, and the world.
At Dundee, your experience of learning it is personal. You will have regular opportunities to discuss ideas, ask questions and develop your understanding with the academics teaching you.
Our staff are active researchers as well as teachers. They use mathematics to tackle problems ranging from cancer treatment and blood flow to machine learning, space weather and the behaviour of the Sun. This research connects modern math concepts to your studies. It shows how maths helps us tackle complex real-world problems.
#### Learn to think differently
A Mathematics degree does much more than teach you mathematical techniques. It develops a valuable way of thinking wherever people need to understand and solve complex problems.
You will learn how to break problems down, recognise patterns, work logically. You will also learn to test assumptions, analyse evidence and communicate complex ideas clearly. Alongside these skills, you will develop experience in mathematical modelling, computation and programming.
These abilities are valued across a wide range of careers. This gives Mathematics graduates the flexibility to work across different sectors and adapt as new opportunities emerge.
