Guardian University Guide 2027
Our Mechanical Engineering BEng degree aims to develop your mathematical, physics, and computational skills so you can develop solutions for real-world problems. You will enhance your problem solving skills so you can design a product from scratch or improve an existing one to help solve global challenges.
With a strong emphasis on practical experience and an industry-accredited degree, you will graduate career ready, with the technical skills and professional credentials to become a leader in a broad range of Mechanical Engineering industries.
The course covers subjects such as:
* Computer Aided Design & Additive Manufacturing: Learn how to design products in 3D using computer software and create physical prototypes using 3D printers
* Electronic Systems Design: Develop knowledge in creating electronic systems to complement your knowledge in mechanical design
* Engineering Materials: Learn how the properties of materials change and break under different forces and how materials are manufactured
* Robotics & Mechatronics: Understand how robots are built, how they function and the principles behind how they operate
* Control Systems: Design systems that keep outputs stable and consistent
In every semester in years 1 to 3, you will gain practical experience through hands-on design projects, lab work, and practical workshops. You will also apply what you have learned to engage in industry-led projects through a problem solving industrial visit, presenting solutions back to industry experts.
### Increased employability skills
Studying Mechanical Engineering at Dundee gives you important skills for your future career in engineering. You will learn about project management, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, which provide you with knowledge in how materials behave under various forces, temperature change or how liquids and gases move. This knowledge will help you create high-performance products in a broad range of industries such as:
* Automotive, Aerospace
* Energy, Transportation
* Design & Manufacturing
* Marine, Environmental
* Healthcare & Biotechnology
* Oil & Gas
Dundee is also the only Scottish university involved as an Associate Partner with CERN in Geneva. CERN is the world’s largest experiment consisting of the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator. Our students can visit and also take an 11-month placement at CERN as part of their studies.
### Passionate teaching
Our academic staff are all experts in engineering and their main focus is to support you and help you succeed. They have an amazing wealth of knowledge and with our open door policy they are always willing to help you learn and will guide you through your various projects that tackle real industry problems.
### Student community
You will join a friendly and supportive community. You can join many of the sports and social activities run by our societies including the DRIVE racing team, where students design, build, and race a single-seat 600cc racing car. Alternatively, you could join the Aeronautical Society, to learn how to design and build an autonomous drone. Both Societies take part in IMechE challenges for Formula Student competition at the Silverstone F1 racing circuit or the Unmanned Aerial System challenge.

“When working at CERN there’s a very ‘go do it’ attitude, so even though it is an internship, we are treated like fulltime employees. If we have an idea, then we are encouraged to try and test it. We have a lot of independence but equally, a lot of support.”
