Why Warwick
About the department
Want to shape the future of healthcare? Our BSc Health and Medical Sciences gives you the scientific knowledge and real-world insight to tackle some of today's biggest health challenges. You'll explore everything from genetics, disease and drug development to mental health, healthcare systems and global health inequalities.
BSc Health and Medical Sciences explores some of the biggest health challenges facing individuals, communities and populations today. From understanding how diseases develop in the body to examining the wider social, economic and behavioural factors that influence health, you will gain a complete picture of what shapes health and healthcare in the modern world.
What makes this course distinctive is the way it brings together medical science and health science, helping you understand both the biological causes of health and disease and the real-world factors that affect people's lives and wellbeing.
You will study the science behind human health, including genetics, molecular biology, physiology, anatomy, immunology and pharmacology. This will help you understand how the body works, how diseases develop and how new treatments are discovered, tested and applied in healthcare.
Alongside this, you will explore the wider context of health, including healthcare systems, public health, patient safety, psychology, sociology, ethics and health economics. This broader perspective will help you understand why health outcomes vary between individuals and communities, and how healthcare can be improved.
By the time you graduate, you will have the scientific knowledge, practical skills and wider understanding needed to make a meaningful contribution to improving health and healthcare. You will be well prepared for a wide range of careers across health, medical research, healthcare, public health, pharmaceuticals, policy and the life sciences, as well as postgraduate study. The course also provides excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue graduate-entry medicine.

Tuition fee
For the 2027-28 academic year, the UK government announced in March 2026 that the tuition fee cap for UK undergraduate students for the 2027-28 academic year would be £10,050.
If you are joining Warwick for the 2026-27 academic year, the University of Warwick’s Executive Board has confirmed a change in fees to £9,790 (from the 2025-26 rate of £9,535), following the UK government announcement in November 2025 to increase in the tuition fee cap for Home students for the 2026-27 academic year.
Students who qualify for government-regulated fees are classed as ‘Home’ students for fees purposes. In future years, fees for continuing students may be subject to an increase in fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government (if permitted by law or government policy).

To learn more about how the UK student fees and maintenance loans are set, please visit the UK Government websiteLink opens in a new window and UCASLink opens in a new window.
Fee status guidance
We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Students will be classified as Home or Overseas fee status. Your fee status determines tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available. If you receive an offer, your fee status will be clearly stated alongside the tuition fee information.
If you believe that your fee status has been classified incorrectly, you can complete a fee status assessment questionnaire. Please follow the instructions in your offer information and provide the documents needed to reassess your status.

Teaching
At Warwick Medical School, our signature educational approach is case-based learning, undertaken in small teaching groups. You will undertake activities centred around real-world case studies. Case-based learning will help you to develop problem-solving skills and integrate your learning, developing teamwork skills that are valued by employers.
You will explore a broad range of structured and specifically designed learning activities including discussions, debates, technology-enhanced learning and interactive lectures.
As an additional feature of the course, some of the content will be delivered wholly online. This will give you some flexibility to learn at the times that suit you and help you to develop personal responsibility for your studies.
The rest of your time will be taken up by directed learning activities, project work, additional reading and reflection as well as preparations for group work and assessed elements.
You can opt to take a summer study programme, or year-long study abroad between your second and third years.
Class sizes
Class size will typically be around 40 - 50 students for full cohort sessions. Case-based learning and other small group activities will be in groups of around 10 students.
Typical contact hours
Around 20 hours per week.
Assessment
The BSc Health and Medical Sciences course includes a mix of examinations, written course work, presentations, posters and skill-based assessment types. Many modules have more than one assessment type, so that you can convey your understanding of module material in multiple ways.
Our assessment strategy emphasises employability and preparation for diverse further study. Our case-based learning strand culminates in a novel case-creation assessment that allows students to showcase a wide variety of applied scientific perspectives. Key transferable skills for further study and roles in fields such as public health and health policy are honed through project and team working.
In years two and three of the course optional modules also contribute to employability, allowing you to explore personalised areas of interest. For example, many students who are interested in graduate entry medicine choose to undertake our Introduction to Clinical Skills option. Through the course you will also have the chance to work on a range of personal development areas, having access to the extensive careers and skills services.
Student research lies at the heart of the course assessment strategy. In year one you will undertake a dedicated Research Methods module and start to critically appraise scientific literature from a broad range of perspectives. In year two you will further develop your research understanding through engagement with more complex and applied research design. In year three, the research theme culminates in a dissertation project supervised by an expert in your field of interest from across the Health and Medical Sciences. Your dissertation project will develop your skills in critical thinking, extended exploration of concepts, testing of theory and analysis, and presentation of findings, opening the doors to research focussed careers and further study.
