### Course description
## Course description
Actuarial science is the study of risk and uncertainty, usually of a financial and long-term nature. Professionals who work in this industry are called actuaries, and it’s a career that’s regularly voted as a top three choice in job rankings. The strong intellectual challenges combined with the expected financial rewards make this a highly sought-after profession.
Our Mathematics and Actuarial Science degree introduces you to the world of an actuary, allowing you to build your technical mathematical skills, as well as developing your business understanding and helping you to become ready to join the world of industry.
On this degree you will become comfortable with data and with its manipulation, studying core modules on data science and artificial intelligence. You will also develop great team working skills and persuasive communication techniques. Crucially, you’ll be in a position to know why you are in an organisation and what you can contribute.
Completing this degree can lead to you obtaining exemptions from the first tier Core Principles exams of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' , alongside a wide range of related skills which will enable you to add value in many areas for your future employers.
The added benefit of an optional year in industry will help you become even more work-ready in a competitive environment.

### Alumni testimonial
Image: Headshot of Lazeen “I studied BSc Mathematics and Actuarial Science at the University of Leicester and had a very positive experience. One of the best aspects of the course was the quality of the lecturers, who were knowledgeable, supportive and genuinely invested in students’ success. The course offered a strong balance between lectures and seminars, along with a good mix of exams and project-based assessments, which helped develop both technical skills and practical application.
A particularly valuable part of the course was the Professional Skills module, which focused on CV writing, interview preparation and broader workplace skills. This gave me a head start when applying for roles and transitioning into the professional environment.
My time at Leicester helped me build strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, alongside discipline and time management. Since graduating, I’ve spent seven years working in actuarial roles across both industry and consulting, and I regularly apply the technical and professional skills I developed during my degree.
My advice to anyone considering this course is to engage fully with both the academic and professional development opportunities - it provides an excellent foundation for an actuarial career and beyond.”
Lazeen, Manager – Life Actuarial, KPMG
