While both CENG and CSCI are rigorously founded on problem solving by programming, data structure, and algorithm design, CENG distinguishes itself from others by offering specialized training for students in areas such as mobile embedded systems, microprocessors, VLSI design, hardware-aided security, and super-computing. On the other hand, CSCI focuses more on software innovation and offers diverse specialized areas such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, big data analytics, cloud computing, computer and network security, database and information systems, graphics and computer vision, and machine learning. Students will first be admitted to the CSE department through the department- based Computer Science and Engineering programme. After the first year of study, eligible students will be invited to declare their major in CENG or CSCI. Students with outstanding HKDSE results and good academic performance in the first year of study are guaranteed their first choice of major.
